What to know (because you clearly don’t):
- 7-Eleven is testing South Korea’s digital currency. Yes, the same place you buy questionable hot dogs at 3 a.m. 🥴
- Shoppers can pay with a QR code. Because scanning your dignity at checkout wasn’t enough. 📱
- There’s a 10% discount for using the digital currency. Because nothing says “innovation” like a Slurpee sale. 🥤
South Korea’s 7-Eleven stores are now accepting the Bank of Korea’s digital currency in a trial that runs through June. Because who doesn’t want to buy a Big Gulp with blockchain? 🧊
This is part of the “Hangang Project” pilot, which sounds like a K-pop band but is actually a CBDC test. Customers with accounts at one of seven partner banks can pay by scanning a QR code. Because apparently, swiping a card is so 2010. 💳
To sweeten the deal, 7-Eleven is offering a 10% discount for using the digital currency. Because nothing screams “cutting-edge technology” like a discount on Cheetos. 🧀
Moon Dae-woo, head of digital innovation at 7-Eleven, said the retailer is experimenting with new tech to improve efficiency. Translation: “We’re trying to make it easier for you to buy junk food faster.” 🚀
This pilot is one of the first real-world trials of a CBDC in South Korea. Because if anyone’s going to test digital currency in a retail setting, it’s the place that sells taquitos and energy drinks. 🌮⚡
