This week is an exciting time for Star Wars enthusiasts! Just yesterday (April 17), Disney and LucasFilm attended the Star Wars Celebration event in Japan. At this convention, filmmakers such as Jon Favreau, Shawn Levy, and Dave Filoni shared updates about their upcoming projects. Among these updates were news on “The Mandalorian & Grogu” and Shawn Levy’s new Star Wars movie featuring Ryan Gosling, officially titled “Star Wars: Starfighter.” Additionally, several other potential projects within the franchise were also announced to be in development. However, it remains uncertain whether these projects will progress into actual production.
As a passionate Star Wars enthusiast, I was thrilled to learn at the recent panel for Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu” that not one, but six more Star Wars movies are in the works! Previously hinted by the studio, these upcoming films had many of us wondering if they were quietly shelved. However, since it’s been a while since we’ve seen a new Star Wars movie (since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker”), it was easy to speculate that perhaps these projects had been secretly scrapped. Thankfully, this isn’t the case, and I can hardly wait to see what these talented filmmakers have in store for us!
Among the highly anticipated upcoming movies is a standalone film featuring Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chionoy. Taika Waititi and James Mangold, directors of respective Star Wars and Logan projects, are also working on new Star Wars ventures. However, details about their films have not been disclosed yet. Moreover, a fresh Star Wars trilogy is under development, with Simon Kinberg, former X-Men producer, overseeing the project. It’s worth noting that these projects were previously announced and, at Star Wars Celebration, it was confirmed that none of these proposed new films have been secretly abandoned by Disney and Lucasfilm.
Will the New ‘Star Wars’ Movies Actually Happen?
The recent reintroduction of “Star Wars” to the cinema, initiated by “The Force Awakens” in 2015, didn’t exactly turn out to be the effortless, fast-paced space voyage that Disney and Lucasfilm had envisioned.
