It’s frustrating to start a new show and find it filled with predictable twists, uninteresting characters, or an unsatisfying ending. Thankfully, some thriller series consistently deliver. From popular franchises to exciting Netflix originals, these shows will keep you hooked with every episode.

Andor (2022-2025)

24 Episodes

With several Star Wars TV series available, Andor stands out as potentially the best one yet. It’s a compelling prequel to Rogue One, and Diego Luna delivers a fantastic performance as Cassian Andor, the character he originated in the 2016 film.

The series Andor delivers a compelling story about the beginnings of the Rebel Alliance and their fight against the Galactic Empire. Spanning multiple years, the show builds suspense and connects directly to the events of Rogue One and A New Hope. It’s a unique blend of espionage and political drama, easily explaining its high praise from critics (96% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Andor might be one of the better Star Wars projects we’ve seen recently, even helping to make up for some past disappointments. At a time when many question whether we need more Marvel or Star Wars shows, Andor demonstrates that a TV series can be excellent, as long as it has a compelling story.

This series is a truly captivating thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat. What’s great is that it’s also a fun watch, even if you haven’t followed the previous stories.

The Sinner (2017-2021)

32 Episodes

When The Sinner debuted in 2017, it stood out as a fresh take on the thriller genre, and it lived up to the hype. Each season begins by immediately revealing the identity of the killer, then explores the ‘why’ behind their actions through flashbacks and character development, following Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) as he investigates.

The unique way each season of The Sinner is structured makes the entire show consistently good. While Season 1, starring Jessica Biel as Cora Tannetti—a mother who unexpectedly commits a violent act on a calm beach day—received the most recognition, the other seasons are equally captivating.

Each season of The Sinner fully explores a criminal’s story, so the season finales feel like a natural and complete ending. But even beyond that, the show is consistently engaging, particularly as we learn more about Harry’s past. What makes a great thriller is a combination of a fascinating mystery and well-developed characters, and The Sinner delivers on both fronts.

Mare Of Easttown (2021)

7 Episodes

Mare of Easttown is a compelling show that deeply explores the life of Mare Sheehan, played by Kate Winslet. All seven episodes are consistently strong. The first episode, ‘Miss Lady Hawk Herself,’ introduces us to Mare and her difficult life in a small town. A shocking murder at the end of that episode then drives the plot forward for the rest of the series.

Although every episode contributes to the story, episode 6, “Illusions,” stands out. It’s where Mare makes significant progress in the investigation, showcasing her detective skills, and importantly, shares a touching scene with her mother – a moment Kate Winslet’s character has been longing for.

While Mare of Easttown hits familiar thriller notes – constantly dropping hints and offering surprising character revelations – the show truly revolves around Kate Winslet’s captivating performance. Mare Sheehan is such a compelling character that you’ll be completely hooked by her investigations and insights.

The conclusion of Mare of Easttown solves the murder mystery, but more importantly, it shows us what happens next with Mare personally. While the show would have been exciting without it, this resolution is what truly makes the story feel finished and satisfying.

Wayward (2025)

8 Episodes

Even though it has a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Netflix’s Wayward is a compelling thriller that explores themes of coming-of-age, family trauma, love, and self-assurance. Mae Martin, the show’s creator and star, plays Alex Dempsey, a police officer who quickly questions their choice to relocate to Tall Pines with their wife, Laura Redman (played by Sarah Gadon).

While some thrillers would center solely on Alex and Laura, this series also beautifully portrays the close bond between teenage friends Abbie and Leila. From the very beginning, as Alex and Laura settle into life in Tall Pines, to the surprising finale that sets up a potential second season, Wayward is expertly crafted. The different storylines all converge perfectly in the end.

Tall Pines is a genuinely unsettling location, reminiscent of classic horror movie settings. But what makes Wayward particularly impactful is its focus on the troubling world of reform schools, giving the story a chillingly realistic feel. While the show gets quite strange at times – think toads and unusual ceremonies – it also tackles a significant and important subject.

I have to say, Toni Collette is phenomenal as Evelyn Wade, the show’s villain. She’s so creepy and clever in how she tries to ‘fix’ the teens at Tall Pines Academy – her methods are seriously unsettling!

You (2018-2025)

50 Episodes

The Netflix thriller You is consistently excellent – not a single episode disappoints. Each season has its own distinct feel, yet remains captivatingly different from the others. It’s unusual for a thriller to be consistently good, but you’ll be hooked by the story of serial killer Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) from beginning to end.

Each season of You centers around Joe’s new romantic partner, which keeps the story fresh and engaging. While Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) might not be as immediately appealing as some of the other characters due to her intense and often violent behavior, she’s a compelling and complex figure.

The show is at its most captivating in its fifth and final season, now that Joe has married Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) and she’s aware of his dark secrets. But even with the stakes raised, the series manages to deliver a few unexpected twists, and the story truly intensifies when Kate fully understands the danger she’s in.

Despite a few cheesy or over-the-top scenes, the series remains high-quality. From the very first episode to the last, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, guessing if and when Joe will finally be caught. Although the ending wasn’t perfect for everyone, it wraps up the story at just the right time.

Mindhunter (2017-2019)

19 Episodes

Fans are eager for a third season, but many consider the existing two seasons of Mindhunter to be perfect. The show, which follows FBI detectives in the Behavioral Science Unit, covers the years 1977 to 1981.

Unlike typical crime shows that focus on a single detective solving a case and revealing the criminal at the end, Mindhunter explores the minds of killers themselves. The series features dramatized versions of real criminals like Charles Manson, David Berkowitz, and Dennis Rader, also known as BTK.

Beyond its compelling story, Mindhunter delves into significant issues like how criminals are profiled, the difficult journey towards justice, and our culture’s fascination with true crime. The series’ thoughtful ending also highlights the harsh realities of police work, as Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) comes to terms with the fact that he couldn’t save every child victim.

Because the characters in Mindhunter are based on actual murderers, the show is particularly unsettling. Despite this dark subject matter, it consistently maintains a high level of quality and a genuinely creepy atmosphere. Unlike many thrillers that rely on exaggerated drama or predictable plot twists, Mindhunter is both realistic and intellectually stimulating.
