Robb has yet to claim the prestigious World Championship trophy despite a long and successful career. As he gears up for the 2024 competition in Honolulu, Hawaii, he recognizes the significance of emerging as the victor and holding the coveted title aloft.
As a dedicated fan and active member of this community, my primary objectives currently revolve around giving back and contributing to its growth. On a personal level, I aspire to achieve victory in the World Championships. These are milestones that I have yet to accomplish in my gaming journey. I’ve previously finished as runner-up for both community service and winning the World Championships. However, the feeling of triumph when you take home the first place is unlike any other experience.
“Winning the world championship title would make every late night spent playing Pokemon and lengthy journey to tournaments worthwhile for Robb,” he concluded.
Ian Robb begins Pokemon TCG journey
I didn’t begin my champion’s journey at the summit of the mountain, just like Robb didn’t. My Pokemon Trading Card Game adventure started when I was five years old. My father, Cameron, had intended to introduce me to Magic: The Gathering, but he thought Pokemon would be a more appealing gateway. However, it wasn’t Magic that captured my heart, but rather the captivating world of Pokemon TCG.
Following Christmas, Robb received a Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) theme deck as a gift and became eager to master every aspect of it. In conjunction with this, Melissa, Robb’s mother, accompanied him to his local league meetings alongside Cameron. Although the initial outcomes were not impressive, Robb was gradually finding his footing within the Pokemon TCG community.
After discovering a newfound enthusiasm for card games, I eagerly requested that my parents take me to join a league. Following my initiation into local tournaments, however, I faced numerous defeats and yearned to enhance my skills. This desire for improvement prompted my parents’ continued support throughout my journey towards gradual progress.
Ian Robb’s love and proficiency for the Pokemon Trading Card Game grew steadily over time, leading him to recognize the need to showcase his abilities at the Regional level around 2010, in Providence, Rhode Island. As a junior then, he lacked the full comprehension of the significance of that tournament. However, when he returned to the Regional scene in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2017 as an experienced player, his eyes were enlightened to the vast potential of the Pokemon TCG community.
In Indianapolis Regional 2017, I experienced the true flavor for the first time. This was my inaugural masters Regional tournament. Although I missed the second day, I managed to reach the upper echelons of the competition towards its conclusion, confirming my capability to compete at a high level.
As a devoted fan of Robb’s Pokémon journey, I can tell you that in 2011, he wasn’t quite ready to compete at the master level yet. To prove himself worthy, he participated in the last-chance qualifier leading up to the World Championship. With his deck featuring Yanmega Prime, Magnezone Prime, and Kingdra Prime, Robb had to secure victory in every match if he hoped to earn a spot at that year’s prestigious tournament.
Robb successfully advanced to have a 3-0 record, placing him among the top 16 players. Following this achievement, it was revealed that all top 16 competitors from the year’s Last Chance Qualifier were granted entry into Worlds. This news served as an inspiring catalyst and marked a significant beginning in Robb’s professional Pokemon Trading Card Game journey.
“Robb recalled feeling anxious during every game, but after triumphing in every encounter, he reached the final 16 and eagerly anticipated his next match to secure a spot among the top eight and qualify for the World Championship.”
“Robb expressed his belief that if an exemption hadn’t been made that one time and the usual number of eight competitions had been held instead of sixteen, he possibly wouldn’t be participating in the game anymore.”
And then came Collinsville
For Robb, the 2018 Collinsville, Illinois Regional was indistinguishable from any other events he had participated in during that season. The sole variation came when his friend Wesley Hollenberg contacted him on Thursday prior to the competition, sharing details of a freshly developed Zoroark Golisopod Lurantis deck. Impressed, Robb opted to utilize this particular deck for the tournament.
From the outset, it was clear that Robb’s decision was spot-on, as he commenced his tournament journey with an impressive 8-1 record. However, to seal a place among the top eight contenders, Robb had to win both of his matches on the second day. Following a triumphant Round 15 encounter against Zachary Bokhari, which Robb described as ‘epic,’ he was filled with determination and conviction that the trophy was within his grasp.
In the Pokemon TCG competition at Collinsville, Robb progressed to reach the finals against Natalie Shampay. As he prepared to begin his match, the prospect of becoming the champion weighed heavily on Robb, a feeling he hadn’t experienced before.
Robb admitted that he found it difficult to get ready for the finals, which marked his debut in a major championship and the largest Masters Regional competition to date. The pressure of performing live on stream was intimidating, as he understood that a victory would significantly boost his recognition and establish him as a notable figure in the community.
In the final leg, the set reached its decisive moment. With tension at an all-time high, Ian Robb rose to the occasion. By securing victory in this crucial third game and ultimately the entire match, Robb emerged as the Collinsville Regional champion for the very first time in his master career.
In the third game of the finals for Pokemon, Robb recounted, was when my anxiety peaked. With just one favorable hand left, I stood on the brink of victory at this tournament. Overcoming one of my most dismal beginnings in this pivotal match brought the triumph that much more delightfully sweet.
As a passionate Pokemon player with nearly a decade of experience under my belt, I’d finally achieved a significant milestone in the community: winning my first major event. Though I’d honed my skills in juniors and seniors for years, it was only now that my victory would be recognized by the public. All those long hours dedicated to playing Pokemon had culminated in this moment of triumph.
A champion is born
In Collinsville, he earned his initial Regional Championship title under Robb’s guidance in 2019. His success continued at the Madison and Portland Regionals that same year. Although these victories occurred during distinct seasons, they added up to a total of five Regional Championship titles for him. Additionally, he claimed the Indianapolis Regional crown in 2022 and more recently, the Vancouver Regional title in 2023.
Robb attributes a significant portion of his triumphs in the Pokemon Trading Card Game to his adaptability. Having navigated various formats throughout the game, he boasts an in-depth comprehension of the current metagame and recognizes the keys to each deck’s success. During his initial turn, Robb aims to assess all potential outcomes that may transpire during the match and select the optimal response.

Tate Whitesell is among the numerous trainers who have witnessed Robb’s development as a competitor over the years. Since the 2017-18 season, they have competed against each other in the New England region. Eventually, their rivalry evolved into a close friendship.
In 2020, during a discussion about a tournament event, a teammate of Whitesell commented admiringly about Robb, saying “that guy never makes mistakes.” Having faced Robb in multiple League Cup and Challenge finals, Whitesell has personally witnessed his exceptional talent. He recalls a specific match where Robb was using Turbo Lost Box with impressive precision, making flawless choices during Colress’s Experiment and Flower Selecting.
As a dedicated fan of the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) scene, I can relate to Whitesell’s acknowledgment of the challenge in ranking players based on their gameplay at the elite level. However, I strongly believe that Robb stands out from the crowd due to his unique and distinct approach to each game.
“Whitesell remarked, ‘He boasts a remarkable ability to swiftly absorb data.’ Each encounter with Ian leaves me in awe as if his hands are working at a pace beyond the scope of mere thought, yet every choice he makes turns out to be accurate.”

Recently, Robb became a member of the Pokemon Trading Card Game team Shuffle Squad. This was an unexpected turn of events for him, as he hadn’t envisioned this possibility as a child. Similarly, providing coaching is something new for him. The opportunity to assist others in the community and serve as a brand ambassador holds significant value for Robb both as a player and as an individual.
Ian Robb’s final step to true Pokemon TCG success
The person seated opposite Robb at the World Championship will be privy to Robb’s accomplishments and backstory. However, Robb himself will be preoccupied, fully immersed in ticking off every item on his Pokemon Trading Card Game list.
“Robb expressed that the victory of winning five Regional Championships in Pokemon hasn’t fully sunk in yet. His primary objectives in the game remain unmet, so despite his recent successes, he feels there is still much more to accomplish.”
