Here comes the arrival of Conquest, my friends! The final episode of Invincible’s third season airs this week. Before Episode 8 unveils, here are five major predictions I’m wagering on – beware, there might be some potential spoilers lurking ahead.
Episode 7 concluded with a pivotal scene that every Invincible enthusiast, including myself, had eagerly anticipated since wrapping up the comics: as the devastating aftermath of the Invincible War unfolded, Mark finally encountered Conquest for the first time.
Similar to Anissa, he’s a Viltrumite military officer dispatched by the empire to assess Mark’s advancements; bear in mind, General Kregg instructed him to ready Earth for their dominion. Unlike Anissa, Conquest isn’t particularly fond of idle conversation or granting multiple opportunities.
As the final moments of Season 3 Episode 8 approached, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race with anticipation. From what I’ve gathered from the comics and understanding that the show might not stick strictly to Robert Kirkman’s original work, here’s my take on what could unfold (if you’d rather avoid spoilers, you might want to stop reading now). In my opinion, we’re in store for an epic battle that will go down as one of the series’ most memorable fights.
Atom Eve will play a bigger role in the Conquest fight
As a fellow comics enthusiast, let me share some insights without diving too deeply into the specifics of the Conquest fight (for those who haven’t read Issues #61-64, they might want to explore it at their own pace). I have a strong hunch that we’ll witness an impressive demonstration of Atom Eve’s remarkable abilities as she swiftly comes to Mark’s aid.
In simpler terms, Eve’s contribution to the Conquest battle is crucial, though short-lived. From what we can see in Episode 8, it appears that Eve will wear her power armor once more, a piece of equipment she last used when she partnered with Mark to confront Mr. Liu earlier during the season.
If spectators have one recurring criticism of the Invincible TV series, it’s that they feel it doesn’t fully capture Atom Eve’s potential, as her solo special demonstrated her immense creativity with her abilities. While she frequently emits pink energy bursts and constructs defensive barriers and bubbles, there is so much more she can do, and Conquest presents the ideal platform for her to unleash and showcase her powers like never before.
Rex Splode’s funeral
It’s not very plausible that the battle of Conquest will dominate the entire Season 3 finale. Instead, it would make sense for Episode 8 to depict Rex’s funeral, given his heart-wrenching demise during the Invincible War.
It’s a touching scene in the comics where Earth’s strongest superheroes gather to honor Rex. The moment becomes even more emotional when Eve attempts to express herself, sharing that he was her first love, her first friend, and her first everything.
In the aftermath of the Conquest battle’s intensity, it appears that this sequence might be brief, offering a momentary respite.
Don’t forget Rus Livingston and the Sequids
Towards the close of Season 2, it seemed as though character Rus Livingston had managed to break free from the clutches of the vile creatures known as Sequids. However, unfortunately, one of them had secretly taken residence within him, and it overtook him following an episode in which he expelled it in Episode 6.
Although Season 3 doesn’t directly reference the Sequids yet, it’s worth noting that they play a significant role in the comic’s storyline later on. Therefore, it’s plausible that the finale could subtly hint at Rus and the potential danger of the Sequid threat.
In Issue #65, you’ll find a scene depicting four individuals in the sewer system, encompassed by the creatures known as Sequids. One of them remarks, “We’re almost there,” suggesting their ordeal is nearing an end. The series could choose to keep these panels exactly as they appear in the comics, or it might opt for a slight twist in its adaptation.
Don’t expect to see Thragg
I’m sorry, but I think it’s extremely unlikely we’ll see Thragg in the Invincible Season 3 finale.
For those unfamiliar with comics, I won’t reveal his character explicitly. There are two main causes why he might not feature in Episode 8. Primarily, if he does make an appearance, it would cram a significant amount into the regular running time; Thragg doesn’t debut until Issue #70.5 (also known as Invincible Returns), and his initial introduction carries crucial context.
In the second place, they skillfully kept Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s role as Conquest secret until Episode 7 was aired. Given that many viewers (including myself) anticipated he would voice Thragg, it appears improbable that the show is concealing another high-profile actor joining the cast.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m hyped about the fact that Thragg is likely to make an appearance in Season 4! Now, since Jeffrey Dean Morgan won’t be joining us this time around, let’s brainstorm who could step into those formidable shoes. Who do you think could bring the same level of intensity and charisma to the role? Let’s discuss!
A Dinosaurus appearance (or tease)
The eighth episode of Invincible’s third season is called ‘I Thought You’d Never Stop Talking.’ Interestingly, this title isn’t a direct quote from the fight scene in the comics; instead, it originates from Issue #68 when Mark first encounters Dinosaurus.
To put it simply, Dinosaurus is actually the formidable foe known as David Anders in disguise within the comic book series. The name “Dinosaurus” is rather precise and relevant since it plays a significant role in this part of the narrative, making it unlikely that it holds no significance at all.
When conversing with Robert Kirkman, he hinted playfully: “Don’t assume you’ve cracked the code. There might be an unanticipated twist at the end. Along the journey, comic book enthusiasts can expect a few surprises, and certainly some alterations here and there.
Simon Racioppa, one of the series’ co-showrunners, mentioned that they stick closely to the source material but also incorporate small adjustments, twists, and expansions to keep things interesting. Essentially, their goal is to delight viewers by providing unexpected elements in every episode.
Up until Episode 8, make sure to follow along with the show’s soundtrack. Before that, explore the reasons behind Mark’s blue suit being significant, uncover what becomes of Powerplex, and if you’re curious about future events, discover how the battle between Invincible and Conquest concludes. During our chat with Robert Kirkman, he clarified the reasons behind Spawn’s absence from the Invincible War and shared insights on why a Rex Splode special might not be forthcoming for some time.
