5 RPG Speedruns to check out during this years Summer Games Done Quick

As the days lengthen and warmth sets in, I can feel that Summer Games Done Quick, one of my most cherished seasons, is nearly here. This week-long extravaganza displays some of the best speed runs from around, featuring flawless frame-perfect performances and mind-bending glitches that will leave you astounded. The event supports a worthy cause this year: Doctors Without Borders. The marathon takes place from Sunday, July 6 to Sunday, July 13.

Alongside popular titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Super Metroid, as well as contemporary hits like Doom: The Dark Ages and Monster Hunter: Wilds, there will also be several Role-Playing Games (RPGs) making an appearance. Given that we are RPGSite, here are five speedruns of RPGs that you should definitely check out to keep entertained during these sweltering summer days.

You can find a complete schedule for SGDQ right over HERE. During the event, you can catch all the action live on Twitch. And if you miss something or want to rewatch a run, you can always find them on their YouTube Channel.

Avowed – Any% (PC)

Sunday, July 6 @ 7:30 pm ET

Estimate: 50 minutes

Runner: MikeWave

At the event, one of the recently launched games you’ll find is Avowed. Launched in February this year, it was developed by Obsidian and is set in the same universe as the CRPG series Pillars of Eternity. However, unlike its predecessors, it offers a fresh first-person perspective. While there are some similarities to Oblivion (another game being run at SGDQ), Avowed isn’t exactly a clone of it. Our reviewer was quite impressed with it, stating that “Avowed is a prime example of a game where the more I invest in it, the more rewarding the experience becomes.

Octopath Traveler – H’aanit Single Story (Cait Mod) (PC)

Tuesday, July 8 @ 7:50 pm ET

Estimate: 57 minutes

Runner: MochaJones10

Octopath Traveler marked Square Enix’s debut using their HD-2D pixel art style, offering a richly mechanical RPG experience with one of the finest Job systems out there. This playthrough will showcase H’aanit, the character who tracks and employs monsters she catches in the wild for powerful effects. The Cait mod in this playthrough boosts the chances of encountering Cait enemies; defeating them rewards a significant amount of experience. In our review, we praised the gameplay but pointed out that the story lacked cohesion, which was partially rectified in its sequel. Nevertheless, this original title remains enjoyable, and this run promises to be thrilling!

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix HD – Critical Lvl 1 Character Choice Any % Race (PS5)

Tuesday, July 8 @ 9:10 pm ET

Estimate: 1 hour

Runners: KirbySora, SonicShadowSilver2

At these gatherings, Speed Run Contests offer an unique thrill since numerous gamers exhibit their maximum prowess and innovative strategies to highlight both the game they’re playing and their mastery of it. In this case of Birth by Sleep, participants won’t know which protagonist they will control during the game, as the selection is determined by which character garners the most contributions. It promises to be an intriguing spectacle!

Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected – Any% (Casual Mode) (Switch)

Friday, Jul 11 @3:20am ET

Estimate: 40 minutes

Runner: NewAmber

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the bonus chapter of Xenoblade Chronicles, a thrilling continuation that unfolds post the original game’s climax. This chapter serves as a tantalizing sneak peek into what we can expect from Xenoblade Chronicles 3. For gamers in the West, this adventure will be kicking off very early on Friday morning, while for fans across the globe, it promises to be an excellent way to unwind after a long week.

Final Fantasy IX – HD PC Cutscene Remover (PC)

Saturday, Jul 12 @ 9:45 am ET

Estimate: 3 hrs 45 min

Runner: Selleath

It seems fitting that this year, Final Fantasy IX – the sole Final Fantasy title on the roster – coincides with its 25th anniversary, which falls on July 7. This specific run is scheduled late in the Super Game Development Quickly (SGDQ) lineup, airing during Saturday morning. The runner will utilize the PC version of the game, equipped with a mod to eliminate cutscenes. Many speedrunners opt for this type of mod, as repeatedly watching cutscenes can become monotonous, and it may detract from the excitement of the run. This promises to be an engaging run, perfect for commemorating a beloved RPG by many, so don’t forget to kick off your weekend right with Zidane and his team!
