5 Heartbreaking Love Stories in Strange New Worlds That Can’t Survive Star Trek’s Legacy!

In the captivating series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the starship Enterprise brims with heartwarming love stories. However, each of these tales must conclude before the timeframe of Star Trek: The Original Series commences. Mark your calendars as the eagerly awaited season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sets sail on Paramount+, starting July 17. The third season of Strange New Worlds continues the intriguing blend of science fiction and romance, following Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise as they embark on awe-inspiring interstellar journeys.

In a fresh take on space exploration, the co-showrunners of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, describe their series as “romantic journeys amidst the cosmos.” The series maintains the episodic structure of “Star Trek: The Original Series,” but unlike its predecessor, the character developments in “Strange New Worlds” are ongoing. Throughout the show’s progression, characters grow, learn, and even experience love – as seen with Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak), who unfortunately meets his end.

In the series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”, there’s been quite a bit of romantic pairing among the attractive cast members (even some triangles), but it’s important to note that these love stories won’t carry over into “Star Trek: The Original Series”. Characters from both shows have been introduced, but Captain James T. Kirk and his crew on the USS Enterprise are not known for their permanent romantic relationships, especially those characters from “Star Trek” who appear in “Strange New Worlds”. Although the romantic storylines in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” can be engaging, unfortunately, they all have a limited lifespan.

5. Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh & Lt. James T. Kirk

La’an Is Never Mentioned In Star Trek: The Original Series

In the third episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, titled “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) found herself drawn to an alternate version of Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). Tragically, this Kirk was killed by a Romulan time agent named Sera (Adelaide Kane), leaving La’an to discover a strong attraction towards her parallel counterpart, Lieutenant James T. Kirk.

In the ninth episode of season 2 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” titled “Subspace Rhapsody,” Lieutenants Kirk and Noonien-Singh admitted their feelings for each other. However, Kirk decided against pursuing a romance due to his existing relationship with Carol Marcus, who is pregnant. Although future seasons 3 and 4 of the series might develop their love story further, it’s important to note that La’an, being a character exclusive to “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” does not appear in the original series as she was specifically created for this spin-off.

4. Lt. Spock & T’Pring

T’Pring & Spock Have Already Taken A Break

In one of Mr. Spock’s (Leonard Nimoy) most memorable episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series, we find ourselves in season 2’s “Amok Time,” where his betrothed, T’Pring (Arlene Martel), makes an appearance. Using the Vulcan tradition of kal-if-fee, T’Pring orchestrates a separation from Spock to wed another Vulcan instead. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 takes us back almost a decade, showing us a younger Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) and T’Pring (Gia Sandhu) enjoying a more harmonious relationship; however, this harmony didn’t persist either.

In the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series, the doubts Spock had about not being fully Vulcan enough for T’Pring strained their relationship from the start. This was before Spock developed feelings for Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). In episode 5 of season 2, titled “Charades,” they mutually decided to take a break from their romantic involvement. It remains uncertain whether T’Pring will reappear in Strange New Worlds season 3 or if Spock and T’Pring’s storyline will resume when they meet again in Star Trek: The Original Series.

3. Lt. Spock & Nurse Christine Chapel

Chapel Has Unrequited Love For Spock In Star Trek: The Original Series

In the original Star Trek series, Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett-Roddenberry) had an unrequited love for Mr. Spock that went unfulfilled. However, in the new series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, this dynamic was flipped. It was revealed that Christine and Lieutenant Spock were actually a couple, although their relationship was brief. From the start of Strange New Worlds, there was an immediate attraction between them, which soon developed into a passionate romance. Spock found joy in showing his human side to Christine.

In the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Spock and Nurse Chapel started a relationship, but it didn’t last long as Christine pursued an opportunity in archaeological medicine. She prioritized her career aspirations and departure from the Starship Enterprise over Spock, which left him devastated by their public split. Despite saving Chapel from the Gorn at the end of season 2, their romantic standing remains uncertain. However, it’s evident that Chapel has a new suitor on the horizon in season 3 of Strange New Worlds.

2. Nurse Christine Chapel & Dr. Roger Korby

Korby & Chapel’s Engagement Doesn’t Last

In the first season of “Star Trek: The Original Series,” an episode titled “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” introduced a character named Dr. Roger Korby, often referred to as the “Louis Pasteur of archeological medicine.” It’s worth noting that Dr. Roger Korby was once engaged to Nurse Christine Chapel. In the upcoming season 3 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Dr. Roger Korby, portrayed by Cillian O’Sullivan, will be reintroduced, and the series will delve into a love story between him and Chapel that was left unresolved in the 1960s version of “Star Trek.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t wait to see how the romantic tale between Nurse Chapel and Dr. Roger Korby unfolds in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.” While it remains uncertain whether they will marry or end up together, the prospect of witnessing their love story is captivating. The intricacies and circumstances surrounding their relationship are bound to be intriguing, and I’m particularly curious about how their engagement concludes and if Spock might have a part in it. Keep your eyes peeled for these developments in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 3 (and perhaps beyond).

1. Captain Christopher Pike & Captain Marie Batel

Pike’s Destiny Isn’t Happily Ever After With Batel

In contrast to traditional Starship Enterprise captains, Captain Christopher Pike demonstrates a different approach by not being solely devoted to his starship. Instead, since the start of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Pike has been involved in a romantic relationship with his peer, Captain Marie Batel (portrayed by Melanie Scrofano). Remarkably, they have managed to navigate through the obstacles and long distances that come with commanding their own starships while maintaining their love story.

In a turn of unfortunate events, Captain Pike from the original Star Trek series will end up disfigured by delta rays in a devastating accident. Spending the rest of his life on Talos IV, he exists within an illusion alongside Vina (played by Susan Oliver and Melissa George). On the other hand, Captain Batel, infected with Gorn eggs in the finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, is critically ill. Regardless of Marie’s fate in season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it appears that neither Captains Pike nor Batel have a hopeful future ahead.
