5 Fantasy Series to Watch if You Love Buffy the Vampire Slayer

While nothing can truly compare to the classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer, several fantasy shows offer a similar experience and can hold fans over until the planned revival. Even though the original series finished over twenty years ago, Buffy Summers and her friends remain incredibly popular, with many people still enjoying re-watches today.

Information about the Buffy revival is still limited, but we know the story will follow a new teenage Slayer named Nova, played by Buffy fan Ryan Kiera Armstrong. If you enjoyed the monster-fighting aspect of Buffy, there’s a similar show now on Netflix. And if you loved the show’s supernatural relationships, strong female leads, or memorable weekly villains, you’ll find plenty to enjoy here too.

Supernatural

2005-2020, 15 Seasons

The popular show Supernatural clearly built upon the foundation laid by Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Supernatural, which lasted 15 seasons, managed to remain engaging largely because of its ‘monster of the week’ episodes – a format Buffy had already successfully established years before.

The TV show Supernatural follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester as they drive across the United States in their classic 1967 Chevy Impala, battling demons, ghosts, and other evil creatures. Think of it as a road trip version of Scooby-Doo, where the gang travels from town to town instead of staying in one place.

Similar to Buffy, Supernatural features compelling villains and a mix of beloved and controversial romantic characters. While the Winchester brothers’ story is generally more focused on horror than Buffy‘s, fans of Buffy who don’t mind a bit more fright will likely enjoy Dean and Sam’s journeys.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

2018-2020, 2 Seasons

Like Buffy, which started as a movie that later gained a dedicated following before becoming a hit TV series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also builds on existing material. The show is based on the Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman, who was previously the star of a family-friendly ’90s sitcom called Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

The show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is much more intense and frightening than previous versions, with truly scary villains that compare to the scariest creatures in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Like Buffy, Sabrina Spellman is a teenager trying to manage her supernatural abilities. Both heroines fight both weekly monsters and major villains, and they each have a close group of friends to support them.

Buffy is more lighthearted and playful, while Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is consistently dark and dramatic throughout its two seasons. If you liked the darker elements of Buffy, particularly Willow’s magic, then Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a great show to watch quickly.

True Blood

2008-2014, 7 Seasons

Compared to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, HBO’s True Blood is definitely geared towards a more adult audience with more mature themes and content. However, if you enjoyed the romance and relationships in Buffy and are looking for something similar now, True Blood could be a great fit.

Like the town of Sunnydale in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood is set in a small town filled with supernatural happenings. The HBO series follows Sookie Stackhouse, an attractive blonde woman, as she begins a romance with the charming vampire Bill Compton. Does that sound like a story you’ve heard before?

Though the romance between Sookie and Bill is central to True Blood, the show, much like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, truly shines thanks to its detailed mythology, fascinating creatures, and memorable side characters.

Ultimately, True Blood is a romance at its heart. If you’re someone who loved the love triangles in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer – even debating who was better for Buffy, Angel or Spike (a debate even the director of a potential revival, Chloé Zhao, admits to!) – you’ll definitely be hooked by the complicated relationship between Sookie, Bill, and Eric.

Interview With The Vampire

2022-Present, 2+ Seasons

Similar to True Blood, Interview with the Vampire is designed for mature viewers, unlike Buffy. While both shows feature vampires prominently, Interview with the Vampire will especially appeal to those who enjoy compelling and charismatic vampire characters.

The AMC show Interview with the Vampire centers around Louis de Pointe du Lac, who tells the story of his life and his passionate relationship with Lestat de Lioncourt, the vampire who turned him. This new series is a departure from the well-known 1994 film starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, notably featuring a more diverse cast and openly portraying the romantic connection between Louis and Lestat – a relationship that was only hinted at in the movie.

Romantic relationships with vampires are central to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as Buffy’s two main love interests, Angel and Spike, are both vampires. The show was also groundbreaking for featuring one of the first long-lasting lesbian couples on a teen drama, with the characters Willow and Tara. Beyond these elements, Interview with the Vampire is a fantastic fantasy series, much like Buffy.

Stranger Things

2016-2025, 5 Seasons

Whether Stranger Things will become as beloved and enduring as Buffy the Vampire Slayer is still uncertain, but it’s definitely one of the most popular shows of the streaming age. As Stranger Things concludes with its fifth season later this year, now’s a great time to start watching – particularly if you enjoyed Buffy.

Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Stranger Things feature a town under attack by a supernatural force – Sunnydale with the Hellmouth, and Hawkins, Indiana with the Upside Down. In each show, a group of teenagers (along with some adults) must fight back, much like a team. And at the heart of both groups is a powerful young woman: Buffy in Buffy and Eleven in Stranger Things.

Some might say Stranger Things relies too much on 1980s references, but fans enjoy that familiar feeling, much like how Buffy the Vampire Slayer captured the spirit of the ’90s. Both shows share a similar heart: they’re about a group of unusual teenagers who come together to achieve something amazing, and that’s been true for Stranger Things from the very beginning.
