4chan Hacked: User Info Leaked Online

4chan, a notorious image-sharing platform, went down after allegations surfaced that it had been breached, resulting in an intruder disclosing user data.

4chan, a platform known for spawning numerous memes throughout the years, might be facing its demise due to a combination of its controversial history involving acts of violence and its rigid position on censorship.

4chan was temporarily shut down on April 15 due to a significant hacking incident where the perpetrator allegedly managed to penetrate the hosting server and gain control over its functions (shell access).

It seems that those whose emails were registered on the site may have had their personal information leaked or exposed (doxxed).

4chan users leaked following massive hack

According to Engadget’s report, a hacker exposed the emails of the moderation team and numerous registered users on the site, some of whom held email addresses from educational (.edu) and governmental (.gov) institutions.

Additionally, Daily Dot reports that the leaked data contained a roster of 218 moderators and extensive backend code spanning hundreds of pages, which included the names of users who had bought annual subscriptions to the platform.

4chan info was leaked online.

The discovery showed that moderators possessed a unique internal system which enabled them to access and view the geographical location, IP addresses, and additional information about anonymous participants.

Screenshots of the admin page even show that 4chan had nearly 11M banned users.

As per Kevin Beaumont, a former top threat intelligence analyst at Microsoft, the hack might cause 4chan to be offline for an extended period of time.

He mentioned that it appears 4chan might be offline for some time, as it seems they’ve suffered a significant attack, affecting not only their SQL databases but also their source code and shell access.

The duration that the imageboard is expected to be down isn’t precisely known. This hack might not have the same level of significance as the massive Rockstar breach in 2022 where GTA 6 videos were leaked, but for those who regularly use 4chan, this unexpected downtime will undeniably be a significant setback.
