By 2025, based on a survey by World, it appears we’re moving towards relationships similar to those in ‘Her,’ as nearly half of the adult population confessed they would consider dating an artificially intelligent entity.
The era of artificial intelligence (AI) has arrived without a doubt, with both individuals and large businesses adopting advanced language analysis tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and others at an increasing pace.
It appears that a significant number of people are utilizing AI not just for general company but also for romantic purposes, such as forming intimate relationships.
The World, which functions as a ‘global network for human identity’, surveyed its vast user base comprising 90,000 individuals – the largest survey of its kind focusing solely on humans – to offer services such as iris scans to confirm authenticity.

AI companionship isn’t as uncommon as you might think
Approximately one quarter of those surveyed admitted to having flirted with artificial intelligence, either as a playful experiment to observe its reaction, or unintentionally.
It’s quite astonishing to note that an alarming 60% of the participants admitted to experiencing being ‘catfished’ by artificial intelligence on dating platforms. This means they found out, or had reason to believe, that the person they were interacting with was not human but a chatbot instead.
Consequently, nearly all survey respondents expressed their preference for dating apps to incorporate a human verification system to prevent engaging excessively with individuals who may not be genuine; however, some people admitted they might intentionally date a digital companion.
2023 data from the Pew Research Center indicates that approximately 40% of individuals find the concept of having an AI partner appealing, and it’s notable that males are about twice as likely as females to contemplate an artificially intelligent romantic companion.
Nevertheless, more than half of the respondents expressed discomfort at the thought of dating an AI, while a third stated that they would allow it to create their dating profile.
Not only that, but those who were surveyed also revealed the main advantages of dating an AI. They mentioned that AIs are always accessible around the clock and they won’t be unfaithful, while reduced “relationship upkeep” is another clear benefit.
It’s interesting to note that what we have now isn’t entirely novel; back in 2020, The New York Times revealed that more than 10 million individuals worldwide were involved in romantic relationships with artificial intelligence entities.
In a world where AI holds equal parts promise and apprehension, corporations like Disney and Universal are taking action to prevent AI from straying beyond human control. For example, they’ve joined forces to sue Midjourney, alleging the company has violated their copyrights by using their intellectual properties.
Reddit has taken legal action against AI firm Anthropic, claiming they unauthorizedly utilized the platform’s user-generated content to educate their artificial intelligence systems.
