34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

As a long-time fan of Friends, I must say that each couple’s journey was unique and fascinating in its own way. The bond between Carol and Susan, the show’s first lesbian couple, was undeniably heartwarming, setting a milestone for television representation.

Among the 236 episodes of “Friends”, various romantic pairings have garnered passionate fan followings. While some ardently argue that Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) had a perfect match from the beginning, others are convinced that Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox), who evolved from best friends to soulmates, were the most fitting couple.

Without a doubt, both Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) had significant romantic relationships – ranging from David and Mike for Phoebe, to Kathy and Janine for Joey. However, the question remains, which pair stands out as the best?

EbMaster reviews and ranks the 34 romantic pairings in the NBC sitcom that ran from 1994 to 2004, starting with the least favorite and ending with the most preferred.

    Rachel and Paolo

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

From the beginning, it was apparent that Paolo (Cosimo Fusco) was just a temporary romance for Rachel. However, when he attempted to court Phoebe, it became evident that their relationship had run its course – effectively ending things between them, disregarding Rachel’s subsequent encounter with him after that incident.

    Rachel and Barry

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Despite starting after Rachel left Barry Farber, DDS (Mitchell Whitfield) on their wedding day, they briefly rekindled their relationship, a fact that was complicated given he was marrying her maid of honor. Interestingly, Rachel herself served as the maid of honor. However, it’s also worth mentioning that Barry had a history of kissing Rachel’s sister – a detail that many might find off-putting.

    Joey and Ursula

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

The sole delightful instance where Joey and Ursula interacted was when Phoebe, in disguise, was mimicking Ursula to help break up their relationship, thus sparing Joey from being left without any explanation.

    Ross and Emily

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

If there were any missteps on this list, it would undoubtedly include Ross and Emily. Joey kept a gallon of milk in his fridge longer than he knew either of them before they got married. Was it unusual for Ross to call Rachel’s name at the altar? How could Emily know? After all, she barely knew this man!

    Rachel and Danny

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

In three episodes, George Newbern’s character, the Yeti, was introduced. First, he mysteriously fogged Rachel. Later, with Monica’s help, he escorted Rachel on a date. However, their brief romance ended abruptly because of his unsettling sibling dynamic.

    Ross and Carol

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

It’s possible that this could be the one relationship of Ross’s that he didn’t end up ruining. His relationship with Carol (Jane Sibbett) ended because they shared a common interest in women. Interestingly, even though she left him for Susan, he still walked her down the aisle at her wedding, which shows their friendship goes beyond romantic feelings.

    Ross and Elizabeth

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

It’s still hard to comprehend why Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden) appeared in five episodes; the main significance of that relationship lay in introducing us to Paul (Bruce Willis). Dr. Gellar frequently made questionable decisions, but dating a 20-year-old student (when he was 32) was undoubtedly one of his worst mistakes.

    Ross and Bonnie

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Poor Bonnie, such a shame that Ross found Christine Taylor’s energetic spirit too enjoyable, but things took a turn when she decided to shave her head, causing him to be repulsed. To make matters worse, Ross ended up betraying her trust by kissing Rachel during a weekend getaway in Long Island. Only Ross could manage such a situation.

    Joey and Janine

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’d say my allegiance to my cinematic crew is unwavering, so strong that I ended a long pursuit of a lady (let’s call her Elle Macpherson) in a matter of moments when I discovered she wasn’t fond of Chandler and Monica.

    Ross and Julie

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Right from the instant Julie (Lauren Tom) exited the plane with Ross, it was evident that their relationship wasn’t going to last. Despite moving swiftly – typical of Ross – they almost decided to adopt a cat together. However, once Ross learned that Rachel still had feelings for him, he abruptly ended things with Julie. Not straight away though; first, he betrayed her by kissing Rachel.

    Rachel and Joshua

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Rachel found herself developing feelings for Josh (Tate Donovan) as they worked together on suits at Bloomingdale’s. Despite him staying when she dined with his parents wearing a nightgown, he quickly distanced himself once she brought up the topic of marriage just a few dates into their relationship.

    Monica and Bobby

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve always identified with the character Bobbie, portrayed by Vincent Ventresca, who had a bit of a drinking issue. He wasn’t “The One” for Monica, but boy, he made those moments we shared entertaining… that is, until he crossed the line and accused her of having an issue herself.

    Rachel and Gavin

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

One intriguing unanswered question in the popular sitcom “Friends” is the fate of Gavin Mitchell (played by Dermot Mulroney) following his kiss with Rachel. We wonder if the charismatic “Super Gavin” continued working at Ralph Lauren, but that’s merely speculation. The chemistry between these two was undeniable, and their playful banter hinted at potential romance — if not for Ross’s involvement!

    Joey and Charlie

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Charlie (Aisha Tyler) was kissing Ross within five minutes of breaking up with Joey. That’s all.

    Rachel and Tag

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Here’s another intriguing question about “Friends”: Was Tag Jones (played by Eddie Cahill) let go as Rachel’s assistant following their breakup? Despite being a decent guy who put his job on the line for her, it turned out to be a matter of timing – she ended things due to her desire to start a family, while he was only 24. It seems she made the correct decision. A short while later, Tag resurfaced asking to reconcile. When Rachel informed him she was pregnant, he vanished from the scene.

    Monica and Pete

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Despite Jon Favreau’s character being extremely funny and wealthy, he couldn’t compare to Monica. Still, she made an effort – a noble one – before deciding to move on when she realized it wasn’t right for her!

    Joey and Kate

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Dina Meyer’s character repeatedly played mind games with Joey, but when she eventually developed feelings for him, she decided to move away.

    Phoebe and Eric

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

It’s been unsettling that Phoebe got involved with her sister’s former fiancé, who was portrayed by Sean Penn, though their relationship only lasted a single day.

    Phoebe and Gary

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Initially, Gary (played by Michael Rapaport), appeared to have great promise and was the first person whom Phoebe felt comfortable enough to share a home with… that is, until he cruelly took an animal’s life in front of her. Of course, it’s important to note that at that point, they hadn’t yet developed a deep understanding of each other to discuss such a significant step as cohabitation.

    Joey and Kathy

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Because the romance primarily served as a guide for Chandler to discover love, it certainly adds an enjoyable aspect. However, it’s evident that Kathy (Paget Brewster) and Joey didn’t quite match in their relationships, as illustrated by him giving her a pen for her birthday instead of something more romantic or thoughtful.

    Ross and Mona

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Mona (Bonnie Somerville) and Ross were adorable – it was endearing how she took an interest in his unusual taffy facts – until they weren’t. Red flags should have popped up for Mona when Ross failed to disclose that Rachel was pregnant with his child early on, and when he couldn’t discuss the nature of their relationship. Unfortunately, she stuck around even after Ross lied about Rachel moving in. (She might have kept the pink shirt as a memento.)

    Rachel and Paul

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

This man, who was romantically connected to Ross through his daughter, lacked expertise in dealing with emotional issues… thus, he wasn’t an option. (By the way, Bruce Willis made an appearance on the show due to a wager he lost with Matthew Perry during “The Whole Nine Yards” filming.)

    Chandler and Janice

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

As a die-hard fan of sitcoms, I must admit that Janice (played by Maggie Wheeler) was undeniably grating. Yet, she served as a reliable refuge for Chandler – until his daring escape to Yemen to dodge the awkward breakup talk.

    Ross and Charlie

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

In a world where scripts often translate beautifully to the silver screen, this film serves as a stark reminder of when reality deviates from expectations. I found myself utterly astonished as Ross, moments after Joey’s breakup, found himself entangled with her, only for her to swiftly return to her volatile ex-boyfriend upon their reunion.

    Chandler and Kathy

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

This romantic entanglement began when Kathy betrayed Joey by having an affair with Chandler, and ultimately concluded with Kathy being unfaithful to Chandler with her co-star. Despite Chandler sharing some responsibility in the situation, it was heartwarming to witness his deep affection for her – and there’s no denying that haircut of his was quite stylish.

    Frank and Alice

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

In spite of a significant age gap between Giovanni Ribisi’s character Frank and Debra Jo Rupp’s character Alice, their affection and peculiarities were nothing short of endearing.

    Rachel and Joey

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Despite being one of the more contentious romances in the series, it’s not the least likable. In truth, these characters seemed plausible and adorable together (apologies for my unabashed enthusiasm)! My main criticism is that if the writers truly intended to explore a Joey-Rachel relationship, it should have been introduced much earlier, before the final season.

    Carol and Susan

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Among the most enduring couples portrayed on the program were Carol (Jessica Hecht) and Susan, who appeared to click effortlessly ever since Carol chose Susan over Ross. Notably, their wedding ceremony marked the first televised same-sex union in American television history!

    Monica and Richard

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Similar to Phoebe and David, Monica and Richard (played by Tom Selleck) often found themselves out of sync. Just as many people, he had no immediate desire to remarry or expand his family… that is, until he felt a hint of jealousy when she considered doing so with Chandler.

    Phoebe and David

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Frankly speaking, their greatest hurdle was the issue of timing. As he put it himself, perhaps things would’ve been different if he hadn’t wasted so much time in Minsk!

    Ross and Rachel

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

In essence, their relationship was more often than not tumultuous rather than harmonious. The moments that were genuinely tender between Ross and Rachel typically occurred during periods when they weren’t officially together. When they were dating, things tended to be complicated – lists weighing pros and cons, messy breakups, excessive jealousy. Despite Ross considering Rachel his ideal match, or ‘lobster,’ their compatibility, unfortunately, leaves much to be desired.

    Judy and Jack

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

Even after over three decades of marriage, Monica and Ross’ parents, Judy (played by Christine Pickles) and Jack (portrayed by Elliott Gould), continued to show affection towards each other, leaving Monica and Ross a bit uncomfortable but impressing everyone else with their endearing bond.

    Chandler and Monica

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

As a film enthusiast, I often find that what’s been hidden right under our noses can be the most profound revelations. Re-watching Friends, it became evident that Chandler and Monica shared an undeniable connection from day one. Despite their friendship status, there was always a deep trust and affection between them as individuals. This bond allowed their impromptu tryst in London to blossom into a lifelong partnership. Even if they hadn’t explicitly planned it, fate seemed to have other ideas for these two soulmates.

    Phoebe and Mike

34 ‘Friends’ Couples, Ranked Worst to Best

As Mike (Paul Rudd) put it in his vows, this couple was ‘remarkably unusual,’ yet they demonstrated that love may not always be simple, but it’s undeniably valuable. Despite hailing from different walks of life and initially having contrasting visions for their futures, Phoebe and Mike were destined to be together since the moment Joey inadvertently introduced them.
