Marvel Studios has released its list of recommended movies and shows to watch for Halloween, featuring a fun combination of monsters, witches, and superheroes with a spooky twist. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t usually known for horror, it does explore darker and scarier themes from time to time.
With Halloween here, Marvel Studios shared a list on Twitter (now X) of its best movies and shows to enjoy while waiting for trick-or-treaters. Here are three perfect MCU picks to add some spooky fun to your Halloween marathon, and why they’re great choices.
Marvel’s Werewolf By Night (2022)
Ever since it came out in October 2022, Werewolf by Night has quickly become a popular choice for Halloween viewing.
Directed by Michael Giacchino, a well-known composer, Werewolf by Night is a unique, hour-long TV special from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Filmed entirely in black and white, it’s a tribute to classic monster movies and features impressive practical effects. A color version is also available on Disney+.
This special centers on Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), a monster hunter with a shocking secret: he’s actually a monster himself. Joining him is Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly), a fellow monster hunter dealing with a troubled past.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited by Werewolf by Night. It wasn’t just a fun special, but it felt like a turning point. It definitely got people, including me, hoping Marvel will explore more of those darker, supernatural corners of the universe in the future. It proved they can do something different, and fans are eager to see more!
Werewolf by Night is a standout experiment for Marvel Studios, successfully trying out a different style and mood. If you’re a fan looking for a self-contained, spooky Halloween special, it’s easily the scariest thing Marvel’s made so far – and it’s a quick watch compared to most of their projects.
Agatha All Along (2024)
Since the introduction of supernatural elements with Werewolf by Night, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been delving deeper into spooky stories. The 2024 series Agatha All Along is a perfect example of this trend. As a continuation of the popular witch character from WandaVision, played by Kathryn Hahn, it’s a natural fit for Marvel Studios to include this critically praised spin-off in their official Halloween programming.
I’m really fascinated by what happened to Agatha Harkness after WandaVision. It’s amazing to see her trying to get her magic back after Wanda took it from her. She’s actually putting together a whole new group of witches to help her find the legendary Witches’ Road! And we’re finally getting a look into just how dark her history really is, which is pretty exciting.
The show features a puzzling newcomer (played by Joe Locke) who becomes involved in Agatha’s journey. Throughout the 8 episodes, the series slowly reveals his hidden ties to Wanda Maximoff’s reality-altering “Hex.” This story acts as a second installment in a three-part saga, following 2021’s WandaVision and leading into the planned 2026 finale, VisionQuest.
The show boasts a wonderful cast alongside its leads, featuring talented actors like Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, Ali Ahn, Sasheer Zamata, and Debra Jo Rupp – each one delivering a standout performance.
Kathryn Hahn truly shines as the lead in this series, which expertly blends horror, comedy, and mystery. Being Marvel’s first show focused on witchcraft, Agatha All Along is perfect for watching around Halloween. It’s both spooky and hilarious, and it’s also a welcome look at the more supernatural elements of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – something fans would love to see more of.
Marvel Zombies (2025)
Originally revealed in 2021, Marvel Zombies is now here in 2025, and it’s delivering exactly what fans of horror within the Marvel Cinematic Universe were hoping for.
This animated series continues the story from episode 5 of Marvel’s What If…?, showing the full extent of the apocalypse that turned many of Earth’s heroes into zombie-like creatures.
This story takes place in a different version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe completely overrun by zombies. With most heroes already turned, a small group of survivors – including Yelena Belova, Shang-Chi, and Ms. Marvel – band together to fight against overwhelming odds.
The TV-MA rating for Marvel Zombies gives Marvel Studios the freedom to create truly intense and shocking scenes, similar to the best in zombie horror. This allows for moments like a memorable and gruesome shot of Spider-Man fighting off a massive wave of zombies – something they likely couldn’t do with a lower rating.
What truly makes Marvel Zombies ideal for Halloween isn’t just the blood and scares—it’s the underlying sadness. Seeing beloved heroes transformed into monsters, and watching those who remain fight for survival and a way to fix things, gives this story a deeply unsettling and memorable quality.
Marvel Zombies is a dark, visually striking, and shockingly disturbing series. After a thrilling first season, there are hints that a second season might be in development.
This story takes place in a different version of reality where no hero is secure, and anyone could become a zombie under the control of the Scarlet Witch, now known as the Queen of the Dead. Although she still possesses her incredible magical abilities and intelligence, she has become the main villain of the animated series due to corruption.
