A new film is now available on Netflix that viewers won’t want to miss, and this weekend is also a good time to check out two other very different releases. Last week, I looked at three Netflix recommendations: Swapped, The Breakfast Club, and Bugonia. Of those, Swapped was the only original movie produced by Netflix.
This week’s recommendations include one Netflix original movie and two licensed films, but they all look great! The selection isn’t necessarily geared towards a movie marathon, offering something for everyone. If you enjoy mysteries, dramas, or zombie thrillers, you’ll find something to watch.
Of all the movies Netflix highlighted last weekend, only Swapped is currently popular enough to be in the top ten most-watched films in the United States. In fact, it’s currently number one! And two of the three movies we recommend watching this weekend are already on that top ten list.
The new Netflix movie hasn’t made the top charts yet, but it’s still very early days. The three films chosen don’t really have anything in common, but each one is good enough to enjoy on its own or with loved ones this weekend.
3. Green Book (2018)
Let’s start with Green Book. This drama, directed by Peter Farrelly, features strong performances from Mahershala Ali, who plays Don Shirley, and Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip. The film tells the true story of Shirley’s 1962 tour, where Lip worked as his driver. It beautifully portrays the developing friendship between the two men while also addressing the racism prevalent during that era. Green Book received a lot of recognition during awards season.
The movie Green Book received five Academy Award nominations and won three: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Original Screenplay. Both critics and audiences praised the film for its thoughtful handling of challenging themes and strong acting. It currently has a 92% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is a popular title on Netflix, ranking as the ninth most-watched movie in the U.S.
2. Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Zombieland: Double Tap is a really funny and enjoyable addition to zombie movies. It reunites the original cast – Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin – and they still have great chemistry. The movie expertly blends humor, action, and plenty of gore.
Currently, Zombieland: Double Tap is the eighth most popular movie on Netflix in the U.S. The movie builds on the original by expanding the zombie universe and introducing a new, even more dangerous type of zombie. It’s a fun ride that will likely leave audiences wanting another Zombieland film as soon as possible.
1. Remarkably Bright Creatures (2026)
Rounding out the highlights is Netflix’s new film, Remarkably Bright Creatures, which is sure to be a weekend favorite. Based on the popular novel by Shelby Van Pelt, this heartwarming story follows Tova, played by Sally Field, as she forms an unexpected friendship with Marcellus, an octopus at the aquarium where she works. Meanwhile, Lewis Pullman plays Cameron, who is on a journey to find his father. It’s a touching film that’s likely to resonate with viewers.
I recently watched Remarkably Bright Creatures on Netflix, and it was just lovely! It’s about a group who come together to unravel a mystery, and honestly, it really pulled me in. ScreenRant’s Molly Freeman gave it a 7 out of 10, and she described it as “A warm hug” – which is so accurate. The characters are incredibly endearing, and it’s the perfect, cozy movie to end your weekend with. I was completely charmed!
