Make the most of your HBO Max subscription by checking out these three great movies. HBO Max quickly became a leading streaming service thanks to the strong reputation of HBO. It not only offers a vast library of classic HBO shows and movies, but also produces original films and series.
Max differs from streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video by focusing on quality over quantity. While it doesn’t have as many titles, almost everything available on Max is well-made, so you can be confident you’ll enjoy what you watch and won’t waste your time on something disappointing.
Even so, choosing a movie on HBO Max can be difficult. The service has a huge library, with films from the very beginning of cinema right up to the latest releases. New movies often appear on Max shortly after they leave theaters, and the available selection changes every month.
HBO Max has a diverse selection of movies this week, with something for everyone. You’ll find everything from thrilling action and large-scale disaster films to darkly funny dramas. With picks from different eras and genres, this week’s choices are a great way to enjoy the end of April. You’re sure to find something you’ll love!
3. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (2025)
Mary Bronstein’s darkly funny film, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, received an Oscar nomination and adds to A24’s reputation for successful independent movies. Rose Byrne delivers a fantastic performance, showing a new and surprising side of her acting talent. The film is a great example of the high-quality, innovative filmmaking happening outside of big-budget productions.
This movie has been a key part of HBO Max since it was released and is known for being quite different from most streaming content. It’s not for all viewers, but it’s far more ambitious and thought-provoking than typical streaming fare. It’s a strange, captivating, and sometimes uncomfortable watch, but it’s guaranteed to evoke a strong reaction – even if you don’t enjoy it.
2. Twister (1996)
Disaster movies go through cycles of popularity, and Twister came out during a peak time for the genre. It’s a visually stunning film that really captures the frightening power of tornadoes and the fascination people have with chasing them. However, Twister isn’t a deep, artistic film; it’s more about the exciting and awe-inspiring force of nature itself.
As a total movie buff, I have to say Twister is a ’90s gem that everyone should experience. Okay, the special effects look a little dated now, but honestly, it doesn’t take away from how thrilling the movie still is! HBO Max, like most streaming services, has a bunch of older favorites, but Twister feels perfect to watch as we move from spring into storm season. It just hits different!
1. Ballerina (2025)
Ballerina, described as taking place in the same universe as the John Wick movies, is a new spinoff film. Ana de Armas stars as the main character, a role she first played in John Wick 3, and she shines as an action hero. While John Wick is currently sidelined, Ballerina offers fans more of the thrilling action they enjoy.
Ballerina is a stylish and fast-paced action movie that fully embraces its over-the-top nature and pays homage to the action genre. While familiarity with the John Wick films is a plus, it works perfectly well as a standalone story. With more John Wick spin-offs planned, expect to see more like it on HBO Max soon.
