2K Sports appears to be joining the competition too with their own college basketball game, hinted at by their recent cryptic post following Electronic Arts’ (EA) announcement about their new college basketball game. The NBA 2K account’s message seems to indicate that college basketball could be a future addition to the NBA 2K series.
“The campus has been quiet for too long,” the post said.
Representing 2K, we confidently assert our dominance in the realm of basketball video games. Our rich legacy with college basketball inspires us to innovate, as we seek thrilling methods to animate athletes and educational institutions. The learning experience begins now.
Previously, 2K Sports produced the College Hoops 2K series, with authentic schools from various NCAA universities as characters. However, they ceased production of the series following the release of College Hoops 2K8 in 2007. Similarly, Electronic Arts (EA) halted their own NCAA Basketball series after publishing NCAA Basketball 2010 in 2009.
On June 30th, Electronic Arts (EA) revealed they were developing a fresh college basketball video game. Interestingly, it was also disclosed that the Collegiate Licensing Corporation had invited bidders to create this new game, with several parties placing bids, although none were explicitly identified. The proposal from the CLC emphasized the inclusion of women’s basketball teams along with men’s teams in the game.
Based on the language used in the NBA 2K social media post and its origin from the official account, it appears they might be announcing a college mode within NBA 2K rather than a new College Hoops game. Although this isn’t officially confirmed yet, fans have been requesting such an addition for some time.
A significant amount of income is generated from college sports video games, as demonstrated by Electronic Arts’ (EA) College Football 25, which earned over $1 billion in revenue and ranked as the second-best selling game overall in the U.S. in 2024. However, it’s unlikely that future college basketball games or modes will be created in collaboration with the NCAA, as they severed ties with video game publishers several years ago due to a range of legal and financial disputes.
EA’s upcoming college basketball video game won’t be released until 2028, but the latest NBA 2K edition will hit the market this year. As for whether a college basketball mode will be included in the new game this year, that information isn’t available yet.
