‘28 Years Later’ Trailer: Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes Fight Zombies in Danny Boyle’s Apocalyptic Threequel — but Is Cillian Murphy One of Them?

As a seasoned movie buff who has navigated through countless post-apocalyptic landscapes and witnessed the rise and fall of various zombie subgenres, I must say that the trailer for “28 Years Later” has piqued my interest. The return of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland to the franchise they helped establish is indeed a welcome sight.

Slip on your jogging sneakers and brace yourself for a thrilling re-entry into the swift-moving undead realm crafted by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, as “28 Years Later” unveils its inaugural official trailer. (Reviewer’s perspective: I can hardly wait to sprint through this chilling universe once again!)

In the third part of the “28 Days Later” series, Boyle and Garland are back at the helm, taking up their roles as director and writer again. They had previously served as executive producers for Juan Carlos Fersnadillo’s 2007 sequel titled “28 Weeks Later.

The upcoming movie is fronted by fresh faces Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, who can be seen in the chilling trailer battling against zombies. Despite earlier reports indicating that original actor Cillian Murphy would return as Jim and also serve as an executive producer, he seems to be missing from the trailer and is not credited among the cast in promotional materials. Interestingly, a startling scene of a zombie in the new trailer has sparked debate on social media platforms, with some suggesting it shares a striking resemblance to the Academy Award winner.

Among the fresh faces joining the cast are Erin Kellyman and Jack O’Connell. The movie’s summary goes like this: “Approaching three decades since the rage virus leaked from a biological research facility, humankind is still confined to quarantine ruthlessly enforced by authorities. On a small island linked to the mainland by a heavily guarded bridge, a group of survivors has managed to eke out an existence among the infected. When one member ventures off the island on a dangerous mission into the heart of the mainland, he encounters secrets, marvels, and horrors that have transformed not only the infected but other survivors as well.

28 Years Later marks the initial installment of a three-film sequel series led by Boyle and Garland. This movie was filmed consecutively with “28 Years Later II: The Temple of Bones,” the second film in the trilogy, helmed by Nia DaCosta.

The movie was filmed by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Andrew MacDonald and Peter Rice, along with Garland and Boyle, will produce the film, which is titled “28 Years Later”. This production is a joint effort between Columbia Pictures, BFI, DNA Films, and Decibel Films, and it’s set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
