28 Years Later Star Gives Update On The Upcoming Film And Its Sequel

As a rabid fan of the “28 Days Later” franchise, I can barely contain my excitement for the upcoming trilogy! It’s been far too long since we’ve ventured into the post-apocalyptic landscape of Britain, and the prospect of 28 Years Later, followed by The Bone Temple, is a dream come true.

2025 marks the long-awaited release of 28 Days Later’s third installment, titled 28 Years Later, even though it’s actually just 18 years since the last film. The sequel, known as “The Bone Temple,” is being directed by Nia DaCosta, with Danny Boyle returning for the initial half. Additionally, a fifth movie in the series is currently being developed, and Ralph Fiennes, who stars in the upcoming third part, has confirmed that both parts have already been filmed.

Speaking with IndieWire regarding my upcoming films over the next few years, I mentioned that out of the three projects, two have already been wrapped up and are ready to hit the screens.

As a gamer, I’m in the thick of an epic trilogy, with two games already under my belt. In this post-apocalyptic world, Britain has been battling a horrific 28-year-long outbreak. The streets are filled with violent, rabid humans, and safe havens are scarce, yet hope remains for the uninfected pockets of society.

Fiennes elaborated on the essence of the Years trilogy. The story revolves around a determined young boy seeking a physician to save his ailing mother. Accompanied by his mother, they traverse picturesque northern English landscapes. However, in their surroundings, there’s an unseen threat – the infected lurk in forests, hills, and woods. Remarkably, he encounters a doctor who may initially seem peculiar, but proves to be a benevolent figure.

Back in January, I was thrilled to hear about the upcoming trilogy of sequels, with the talented Alex Garland at the helm as the screenwriter for all three movies! Just two months after the announcement, director Danny Boyle confirmed that Garland had already completed the scripts. I can hardly wait to see what these creative minds have in store for us!

In addition to Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding, new members have been brought into the cast. Notably, Cillian Murphy is returning to work with Boyle once again, taking on the role of Jim from “28 Days Later” that he originally portrayed over 20 years ago following the release of the initial film.

28 Years Later is scheduled to premiere on June 20, 2025.
