28 Years Later concludes with an unforeseen series of events which serve as a prelude to the upcoming film, The Bone Temple.
28 Years Afterward serves as the third installment in the zombie saga, where a virus transforms ordinary humans into enraged, monster-like beings due to its effects.
Similar to the initial release “28 Days Later”, Alex Garland pens the script, and Danny Boyle takes on the director’s role, but unlike its predecessor, the upcoming film will present a fresh batch of characters.
You might want to check out the review of TopMob’s 28 Years Later, where we label it as a “heartfelt sequel brimming with unexpected twists and chills.” One such twist that stands out is its climax, which leaves a lasting impression, while laying the groundwork for the upcoming movie The Bone Temple. SPOILERS AHEAD…
The end of 28 Years Later calls back to the beginning
28 Years Later opens with a gaggle of kids enjoying Teletubbies in a cozy lounge, yet chaos erupts across the remainder of the dwelling. This rampage ends in a bloodbath, but one child miraculously escapes – his name is Jimmy.
He sprints towards the neighborhood church, where Jimmy’s dad serves as a minister, and appears to be quite content with the approaching apocalypse, referring to it as a “magnificent day of reckoning.” Before being overrun by the infected mob, Jimmy’s father hands him a cross as a symbol of faith and something to hold onto.
The tale unfolds from there, centering around Spike’s rite of passage at the age of 12, marked by him slaying his first infected, parting ways with his father, and experiencing the heartrending loss of his mother. However, amidst this turmoil, he discovers a fresh beginning through the care of an infant.
At the movie’s end, Spike has become self-reliant and spends a solitary 28 days. During this time, he delivers the baby he’d fathered and later gives it to his father. Subsequently, he resumes his journey, continuing until he can no longer see the ocean in the distance.
In the scene that follows, I discovered him skillfully preparing a fish. Suddenly, a zombie lurked close by. Instead of panicking like I did earlier during the film, Spike was prepared this time. With a nonchalant demeanor and calm composure, he swiftly dispatched the undead menace with an arrow.
Despite more individuals falling ill, Spike dashes headlong, only to collide with a barricade constructed of rocks and pebbles. From above, a voice rings out, “Excellent aim, a work of art.” Upon identifying the speaker, it’s apparent that this mature man is none other than Jimmy, recognizable by the cross he wears around his neck.
Golf ninjas attack
Here’s what unfolds next seems quite unusual. Jimmy finds himself among individuals dressed in tracksuits, some carrying golf clubs, and he queries Spike, “Is it okay if we join in now?
In an exhilarating sequence, I and my team launch an attack on the infected, delivering acrobatic feats and lethal strikes in a heart-pounding montage that outshines any action scene previously seen in this film.
The altercation winds down as Jimmy exclaims “Howzat!”. He reaches out his hand and identifies himself to Spike by saying, “Hi, I’m Jimmy.
The movie concludes, hinting at the continuation of the story in “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” a sequel that’s been filmed. This implies that the narrative will carry forward right from where its predecessor ended, shedding light on the enigmatic group led by Jimmy, which appears to have cult-like tendencies.
In addition, it’s likely that Spike will reconnect with his father, whose final action in the movie is shouting his son’s name frantically as he searches for him. Moreover, we can expect that Cillian Murphy, who played a significant role in the original film, might appear briefly in Part 2, paving the way for a leading role in the potential Part 3.
28 Years Later has been released, and The Bone Temple is set for release in January 2026. For details about Cillian Murphy’s role in the upcoming sequels, click here. If you’re curious about where the original film ranks on our list of top zombie movies, check it out here.
