Although we’re a couple years short of the timeframe set in “28 Years Later,” that hasn’t deterred director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland from revisiting the horror series they initiated in 2002. The initial film of their planned trilogy is scheduled to hit theaters soon, and excitement for the full release has reached an all-time high.
Initially, I felt somewhat disappointed when I was only allowed to watch the first 28 minutes of this movie, as I’m a fan. However, discussing it with director Danny Boyle enlightened me about a potential scene that might have influenced Sony’s choice to shroud the film in secrecy.
Danny Boyle Really Wants To Start Showing The Complete 28 Years Later
This afternoon, I had the pleasure of attending an exclusive sneak peek of the opening act for an upcoming horror masterpiece, “28 Years Later,” with a bit more depth and detail than previously revealed. Director Danny Boyle set the stage with infectious enthusiasm, expressing his regret that we weren’t privy to the entire film. He offered some insights into why we were only getting a taste of this cinematic journey, emphasizing the unique aspects that make it worth the wait.
I wasn’t the one who suggested watching the movie, but I would have preferred if we did. However, they don’t want any spoilers regarding certain parts of it, so you won’t be able to see it. We were planning on discussing the second half of the movie together, but since you won’t get to see that, I’m sorry you’ll miss out on the rest of it as well.
Just a small point before we proceed: although my hypothesis suggests otherwise, the church scene in 28 Days Later isn’t its origin. However, if you’ve been wondering about the authenticity of 28 Weeks Later, this opening should clear up any doubts – because that sequel does indeed fit seamlessly into the storyline. Now, let’s dive into a brief summary of what was presented at the screening.

28 Years Later’s First 28 Minutes Are Stellar, Terrifying Worldbuilding
In the trailer for “28 Years Later,” we primarily focused on the community of Holy Island and its governance. However, before that, we were first treated to a complete recap of the Teletubbies flashback, depicting a boy witnessing his family being overrun by the initial wave of Infected.
In a leap through time, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) gears up for Spike’s (Alfie Williams) initial infected hunt. Meanwhile, there’s a scene with Isla (Jodie Comer), who appears healthy but shows signs of irritability, persistent fever, and discomfort. However, it is uncertain if she has been infected or not.
Additionally, the material presented also featured a clip from the 28 Years Later sequel that was included in the re-release of 28 Days Later. This clip depicted Spike’s second kill, wherein he decapitates an Infected hanging above him. During this concluding part of the presentation, the father and son encountered two new types of Infected they were familiar with: “slow lows” and “Alphas.

Both function differently in speed and power, yet they demonstrate a single truth – the Rage Virus is shaking things up as it begins its evolution. As we near the conclusion of the video, right before the title appears, an Alpha does something surprising. It shouts an instruction: “Flee!
28 Years Later’s gripping opening had me shivering with anticipation, living up exactly to my expectations – and then some. This leads us to ponder over Danny Boyle’s reasoning behind keeping the rest of the film hidden away right now.

Danny Boyle Thinks 28 Years Later Is Still Under Wraps Because Of One Scene
During my conversation with Danny Boyle about the history and future of the franchise, he revealed several intriguing stories that offer insights into the background of the 28 series. Although I won’t delve into specifics here, this discussion included a significant moment related to his film, Sunshine. This particular scene was inspired by an improvised COVID-19 memorial in London, a detail Boyle chose to share.
In the way it unfolded, the situation reminded Boyle of the chilling scene in “28 Days Later” where Jim (played by Cillian Murphy) discovers his parents dead at home. This moment, according to Boyle, seems to be a key factor causing delays or obstacles.
My interpretation is that they might be withholding the remaining parts of the movie due to a particularly emotional scene. They may fear that horror enthusiasts would find it too sappy and thus not want to watch it. However, I believe that such emotions are an integral part of the horror genre, not just limited to it but encompassing a broader range including slasher films or similar. This emotional depth was also present in the initial movie.
Reflecting on it now, this philosophy appears to have similarities with the promotional strategy for the movie “28 Days Later” before its premiere. As you’ll notice in the trailer linked below, the marketing strategy heavily emphasized eerie visuals and rock music, while downplaying the poignant emotional scenes that viewers still recall today.
From the 28-minute preview, it’s clear that Danny Boyle’s unique style is evident, especially since he’s working again with Alex Garland who has refined his brutal yet meticulous storytelling from films like “Ex Machina” and “Warfare.” Given that the original film’s emotional core will be there, it’s a tantalizing prospect for me as a die-hard fan. So if you share my excitement, I strongly urge you not to saunter casually but to run, yes run, to grab your tickets for “28 Years Later” once they become available on June 3.
