28 Days Later Director Jokes That He Deserves A Piece Of The Last Of Us Royalties

Movies featuring undead or infected creatures have been popular for several decades, with 28 Days Later and The Last of Us video game often being linked together. Director Danny Boyle, in a recent interview, humorously suggests that he and writer Alex Garland should receive a share of the royalties from The Last of Us and The Walking Dead, as they may have served as inspiration for these works.

In a chat with IndieWire, Boyle revealed that their decision to create another installment in the 28 series, titled “28 Years Later,” stemmed from the enduring appeal of the zombie genre, which has been fueled by hit shows like The Last of Us and The Walking Dead.

It was evident that it had maintained its appeal over time. Not just the initial movie, but also spin-offs or anything else derived from the original concept’s success. He often joked about how great it would be to have a share in series like The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, and similar productions,” he remarked.

28 Days Later, initially released in 2002, features Cillian Murphy as a character who emerges from a coma into a world devastated by a highly contagious virus that has left society in ruins. Conversely, The Last of Us chronicles an outbreak of a fungal disease leading to the breakdown of civilization and the rise of terrifying creatures.

Previously, Garland, the author behind the screenplays for both “28 Days Later” and its sequel “28 Years Later”, expressed his belief that “The Last of Us” surpasses “28 Days Later” in terms of artistic quality, if not equaling it in writing.

What struck me about The Last of Us was its depth and emotional impact. Don’t get me wrong, 28 Days Later holds a special place in my heart. However, The Last of Us stands out as something truly exceptional.

28 years after its release, the movie titled “28 Years Later” is currently showing in cinemas and has already grossed over $60 million globally. The post-apocalyptic horror film features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes as its main stars.

Back in 2013, I was captivated by the debut of The Last of Us from Naughty Dog. Fast-forward to 2020, and there was the sequel that kept me hooked. Now, it’s been whispered around that they might be cooking up a third installment in the franchise, but they haven’t officially confirmed anything yet. Meanwhile, I can hardly wait for another season of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series to drop!
