After more than 25 years, HBO’s acclaimed 10-part World War II miniseries, Band of Brothers – a project that cost over $125 million to produce – is once again gaining popularity on streaming services around the globe.
Premiering in 2001, HBO’s Band of Brothers was the most expensive miniseries ever created, costing around $125 million—or $12.5 million per episode. It’s now celebrated as one of the greatest TV shows ever made.
Even 25 years after its debut, Band of Brothers remains incredibly popular. As of February 23, it’s currently the eighth most-watched show on Apple TV worldwide, according to FlixPatrol. That puts it ahead of series like The Night Manager, Chernobyl, and even long-running hits such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Friends, and Game of Thrones.
Made by the team behind the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan – Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks – Band of Brothers tells the story of “Easy” Company, a group of paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division. The series follows them through their training and their experiences in key battles of World War II, starting with D-Day and ending with the occupation of Berchtesgaden.
The cast of Band of Brothers features Kirk Acevedo, Eion Bailey, Michael Cudlitz, Dale Dye, Rick Gomez, Scott Grimes, Frank John Hughes, Damian Lewis, Ron Livingston, James Madio, Neal McDonough, Rene L. Moreno, David Schwimmer, Richard Speight Jr., Donnie Wahlberg, Matthew Settle, Douglas Spain, Rick Warden, Marc Warren, Shane Taylor, Dexter Fletcher, Colin Hanks, and Ross McCall.
Band of Brothers continues to be praised by both critics and viewers. Critics give it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, calling it a realistic and moving depiction of the hardships of war and the sacrifices of everyday soldiers. Audiences agree, giving the series a 97% approval rating.
The miniseries Band of Brothers received six Emmy Awards, including the award for Outstanding Miniseries, and is now considered one of the best TV shows ever created. It’s celebrated for its high production values, often compared to the film Saving Private Ryan, and is a prime example of television at its finest.
The success of Band of Brothers led to two similar World War II miniseries, both created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. HBO’s The Pacific (2010) and Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air (2024) tell stories about different parts of the American military.
