The 2011 Green Lantern movie, starring Ryan Reynolds, is often ranked among the worst superhero films ever made, and many fans would prefer to forget it. Despite its overall poor reception, there are a few aspects of the film that should be revisited in the upcoming Lanterns TV show. While the movie wasn’t well-received, it did have a handful of good moments and got some details right.
The DCU’s upcoming series, Lanterns, is scheduled to debut in August 2026. While the release date isn’t far off, details about the show have been mostly kept secret. A first look at the series was recently shared with the public, and the response from fans has been varied.
The Green Lantern Corps is a group of alien law enforcers with amazing powers. But the upcoming movie, Lanterns, appears to be a more realistic story focused on Earth, and it’s expected to be very mature with an R-rating.
This new project appears to be a significant departure from Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern film, and that’s generally positive. However, it should still incorporate some of the strengths of the earlier movie.
Three Green Lantern Elements That Need to Be in Lanterns
Outer Space

As we’ve discussed, the Green Lantern Corps doesn’t just protect Earth. They safeguard planets across the universe, so space plays a major role in their adventures.
The 2011 Green Lantern movie explored several planets within the DC universe, attempting to capture the epic, intergalactic scope of the comics. The upcoming Lanterns series should do the same, moving beyond a solely Earth-based setting. Nathan Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner, has already appeared as a Green Lantern in both Superman and Season 2 of Peacemaker. However, both of those shows focused primarily on Earth, including Guy Gardner’s scenes.
The new show will primarily take place on Earth, but it should also include other planets or space settings. Otherwise, it would mean a Green Lantern character has appeared in three DC Universe projects without a significant focus on outer space, which doesn’t make sense given the Green Lantern Corps’ nature.
Alien Lanterns

While many popular DC heroes are human, the Green Lanterns are no different. Guy Gardner is already known as a human Lantern, and the new series, Lanterns, will introduce Aaron Pierre as Jon Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan – both also human characters.
Many of the most well-known Green Lanterns aren’t human – characters like Kilowog, Tomar Re, and Sinestro are popular with DC Comics fans, and it’s important that the upcoming HBO Max series features them.
Although the Green Lantern movie starring Reynolds received a lot of criticism, many viewers liked seeing the various alien Lanterns and how they interacted with Hal Jordan. The upcoming Lanterns series should focus on introducing and developing at least one or two key alien members of the Lantern Corps, as they’re likely to appear in future projects.
Other Lantern Colors

While the Green Lanterns are the most well-known, they aren’t the only ones. DC Comics features Lanterns of various colors, and these different groups play a significant role in the stories. For instance, you’ll find both Yellow and Red Lantern Corps alongside the Green Lanterns.
The Yellow Lantern Corps is often called the Sinestro Corps because it was created by Sinestro after he obtained a yellow Lantern ring. Since Sinestro (played by Ulrich Thomsen) will appear in the Lanterns series, the show will need to depict how he acquired his ring and established the Sinestro Corps.
Paul Ben-Victor has joined the cast of Lanterns. He’ll be playing Antaan, an alien character who many fans suspect will eventually become the supervillain Atrocitus in the series.
Atrocitus originated the Red Lantern Corps in the comic books. If the show follows that storyline and Antaan transforms into Atrocitus, it should introduce the Red Lanterns, and also hint at the existence of other Lantern Corps with different colors, similar to how the Ryan Reynolds movie established the Yellow Lanterns with Sinestro.
