After Steve Rogers passed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson in Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Mackie’s character officially became Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following a Disney+ series that prepared the way, Sam’s first solo film, Captain America: Brave New World, came out last year. The movie focused on Sam as Captain America and featured several Hulk characters, with The Leader as the primary villain and Harrison Ford making his debut as Red Hulk.
Sam Wilson’s debut as Captain America signaled the end of Chris Evans’ time as Steve Rogers. Now, Sam Wilson is the new face of the Captain America movies. And, at the end of Brave New World, he assembled a new Avengers team, effectively taking over Steve Rogers’ position as the leader of the MCU’s primary Avengers group.
2026 Could Already Set Up The Return To The MCU’s Original Captain America Franchise
The initial trailer for Avengers: Doomsday announced the return of Steve Rogers, but deliberately avoided calling him Captain America. This sparked speculation about Chris Evans’ future with Marvel. However, a solo Captain America movie starring Evans isn’t necessarily off the table. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has indicated that the recent series Brave New World didn’t perform as well as hoped, and he attributed that partly to it being the first project without Chris Evans in the role.
Following the film’s success and comments from Kevin Feige, Chris Evans is reprising his role as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo Brothers have stated that his Captain America will be a key part of the movie. This could pave the way for another Captain America film starring Evans, potentially alongside Anthony Mackie, or it might introduce a new actor to take on the role of Steve Rogers after Avengers: Secret Wars, which will essentially refresh the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
