2024’s Canceled Shows, for Your Final Consideration

As a longtime fan of television and someone who’s always been intrigued by the behind-the-scenes stories of cancelled shows, I find it both fascinating and disheartening to see so many productions get the axe after just one or two seasons. It’s particularly disappointing when these shows, like “Schmigadoon,” “Rap Sh!t,” “Julia,” “Our Flag Means Death,” and “Minx,” offer unique perspectives and innovative storytelling that resonate with audiences.

In the year 2016, Netflix made an uncommon move among its four-year lineup of original programming by cancelling the nearly forgotten series “Bloodline.” Now, in 2024, terminations of streaming shows have become a common occurrence, leaving many wondering if their favorite programs are truly successful or just beloved within specific circles. With no reliable data on viewership numbers, it’s challenging to distinguish between hits and hidden gems.

Halo (Paramount+)

What’s this production about? It’s a live-action version of the namesake video game, featuring Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief. Outer Range (Prime Video)

“What’s the show ‘Outer Range’ about?” “Dude, what doesn’t it involve? Josh Brolin plays a rancher with an unusual discovery on his land – a time hole. Imagine a perfectly round pit where stepping in takes you forward or backward in time. There are complex plots, a future cult, and more. But essentially? It’s all about the Time Hole.”
How many seasons does it have? It ran for two seasons.
When was it canceled? The cancellation came in July.

The Big Door Prize (Apple TV+)

As a long-time fan of Chris O’Dowd’s work and an avid consumer of Apple TV+ content, I was thrilled when I heard about “The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair.” The show, based on the book of the same name, promised an intriguing blend of comedy and mystery.

The D’Amelio Show (Hulu)

As a long-time fan of the D’Amelio family and their entertaining TikTok videos, I was excited to hear about their reality show, “The D’Amelios: Famous In a Family.” Having followed their journey from the beginning, I was eager to see how they would navigate the world of fame and business expansion, much like the Kardashians.

Tokyo Vice (Max)

The show, titled “Max,” which is executive produced by Ansel Elgort, portrays Max’s journey into the deceptive world of Tokyo’s neon-lit underbelly in the late 90s. Unfortunately, after two seasons, the production team announced its cancellation on June 8. Producers J.T. Rogers and Alan Poul shared a statement expressing gratitude for the opportunity to end the first season with cliffhangers and add two extra episodes for a satisfying conclusion.

The Girls on the Bus (Max)

As a cinephile, I’d describe it like this: I once came across a captivating television series based on a chapter in Amy Chozick’s book. It follows the lives of four brave female journalists as they report on the quirks and flaws of various presidential candidates. Along their journey, they forge friendships, experience love, and uncover scandals. Unfortunately, after just one season, it was taken off the air on May 24.

High School (Freevee)

As a queer woman who grew up with identical twin sisters, I can’t help but feel deeply connected to the premise of “Highschool,” the Tegan and Sara-inspired series on Freevee. The show’s description of a journey towards self-identity, complicated by the similar struggles and self-discovery of a twin, resonates strongly with my own life experience. I remember the constant comparisons and the feeling of being lost in the shadows of my sisters’ achievements. However, despite the challenges, our unique experiences eventually shaped us into independent individuals, carving out our own paths in the world. The upcoming release of “Highschool” promises to explore these complexities with authenticity and nuance, and I can’t wait to see how it portrays the journey towards self-discovery for queer twins.

Walker (CW)

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d describe “Walker” like this: This intriguing show on The CW is all about Texas Ranger Cordell Walker, portrayed by the talented Jared Padalecki. He’s a man who adheres to his unique moral compass while juggling relationships, parenthood, and his demanding law enforcement duties. His past harbors secrets that add depth and mystery to this engaging narrative. It’s actually a reboot of the classic 1990s series “Walker, Texas Ranger.”

What’s the story behind this psychological thriller? This thought-provoking series centered around astronaut Jo, played by Noomi Rapace, who experienced a calamitous event in space and upon her return to Earth, discovered puzzling absences in her personal life. Apple TV+ described it as an intriguing dive into the depths of human psychology, following Jo’s relentless pursuit to uncover the truth about the shadowy past of space travel and retrieve all that she had lost.

The crew of a damaged interstellar freighter find themselves stranded on an alien planet, where they discover a world that has been allowed to develop without human intervention. The show will continue airing on Max while also becoming available on Netflix starting May 31.

Housebroken (Fox)

As a long-time fan of animated shows, I’ve seen my fair share of quirky and unique concepts. But “Animaniacs Reboot,” created by the brilliant minds of Jennifer Crittenden, Clea DuVall, and Gabrielle Allan, stands out as one of the most delightful and innovative I’ve come across.

Extended Family (NBC)

As a film enthusiast, I’d describe “Brave New World” this way: This Mike O’Malley-created comedy series tells my story as Jim (Jon Cryer) and Julia’s (Abigail Spencer), a divorced couple sharing custody of our kids in the family home. Our amicable split gets turned upside down when Boston Celtics owner Trey (Donald Faison) enters the picture and wins Julia’s heart, creating quite the complications. The show is based on the real-life experiences of executive producers Emilia Fazzalari, George Geyer, and Wyc Grousbeck, who also happens to be the real-life owner of the Boston Celtics. We only got one season to enjoy this fascinating tale, with the show getting canceled on May 7.

Death and Other Details (Hulu)

I was hooked on this Hulu series where Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane shone. The story unfolded among the dazzling circles of the wealthy elite.
