2-Part A24 Comedy Series Maintains Rare Rotten Tomatoes Achievement

A24‘s returning comedy is keeping firm with a rare achievement on Rotten Tomatoes.

This film company is a leading force in the industry, having won 21 Academy Awards. They’re hoping to continue their success this year with the film Marty Supreme, which is expected to be a strong contender. Many people don’t realize, however, that they also produce popular TV shows, including HBO’s Euphoria and the Netflix hit Beef.

The company also produces Dreaming Whilst Black, a show made with the BBC that recently started its second season on Showtime and Paramount+ in February. It’s currently getting rave reviews, with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on five reviews – a very unusual feat for a show to maintain from its first season! The first season, consisting of six episodes, also achieved a perfect 100% score, based on 18 reviews.

Created by Ali Hughes and Adjani Salmon, Dreaming Whilst Black follows Kwabena (played by Salmon), a young filmmaker stuck in a boring office job. He’s determined to make his dream of creating a TV show a reality, but as he gets closer, he faces increasing challenges with finances, relationships, and staying grounded.

Featuring actors Dani Moseley, Jo Martin, Demmy Ladipo, Rachel Adedeji, Babirye Bukilwa, Martina Laird, and Roger Griffiths, Dreaming Whilst Black started as a web series before becoming a television show. It was acquired by A24 and shown on Showtime in the US and BBC Three in the UK. Season 2 follows a very successful first season that received award-winning recognition.

In November 2023, Salmon was recognized as a BAFTA Breakthrough Award finalist, and critics included their show, Dreaming Whilst Black, on many ‘best of the year’ lists. The A24 production has been praised for its funny and relatable humor, along with Salmon’s engaging performance. Early reviews of the second season have been equally positive.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant for their Dreaming Whilst Black series, the creators discussed the experience of sharing such a personal story with a wide audience. They hope the show’s positive reception will attract more viewers, leading to a renewal for a third season, which they feel it truly deserves.
