1923 Season 2 Must Reveal the Secret Behind Jacob & Cara’s Childless Marriage

1923 Season 2 will conclude this chapter of the Dutton family’s story, leaving us eager for some resolution regarding a continuing mystery involving Jacob and Cara.

In the Yellowstone spinoff, Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren reappear, and this time, the older Dutton family members find themselves faced with significant challenges. Winter has arrived in Montana, bringing tough weather, scarce resources, and dangerous wildlife. To top it all off, they’re still grappling with the task of paying Donald Whitfield’s taxes to avoid losing the ranch.

As I stepped into the role of managing this ranch, it hit me hard that it wasn’t mine by right – not even close, seeing as it belonged to the late James and Margaret Dutton. Yet here I am, shouldering the responsibility for their kids, Spencer and John I., doing my best to honor their legacy. Quite a task indeed!

It’s apparent that the Dutton family bond is quite robust. Yet, this tight-knit relationship raises some queries as to why Jacob and Cara did not produce offspring of their own to nurture.

Jacob and Cara Dutton never had children of their own in 1923

Due to the lack of information about Jacob and Cara’s earlier years, their decision not to have kids has left fans curious as to the possible reasons behind it.

As one Redditor asked, “Why did Jacob and Cara not have any children of their own? Do we know?”

Jacob played a paternal role towards John, and since his passing, that role has been filled by Jack. Similarly, in the absence of their father, Cara has taken charge of the ranch, showing strong leadership while providing emotional comfort to both Jack and Elizabeth.

It goes without saying that they would have been excellent parents, but unfortunately, conception can be elusive for certain couples.

One idea that surfaced was that Jacob and Cara might have had children, but these children passed away before 1923. This theory can be substantiated by revisiting the Yellowstone pilot, during which John Dutton III recalls various gravestones located on the estate.

It’s been suggested that “Ned Dutton” and “Chase Dutton” could possibly be the deceased children of Jacob and Cara, as the TV shows have never confirmed their identities.

In their writing, a user suggested a theory: “Perhaps those boys who had passed away young were actually Jacob and Cara’s sons. Since [John] never knew them personally, it makes one wonder why he didn’t consider Elsa, or his own brother Peter, whom he mentioned to Kaycee’s wife at their son’s funeral instead?

However, another (simpler) theory is that Jacob and Cara simply ran out of time to have a family.

The commenter noted that in one scene, it’s implied the couple had been married for 44 years. Given that Helen Mirren is nearly 80 years old, this suggests she was around 35 when they tied the knot. While this age might not be too old to have children, during that time period, a woman in her mid-thirties would have been considered quite advanced in terms of marriage and childbearing.

When Elizabeth experiences a loss with the baby, it was suggested by Jack that perhaps she could resemble his Aunt Cara, taking care of and loving other infants, and educating others in the process.
