1923’s Season 2 finale, titled ‘A Dream and a Memory,’ offers a heartfelt conclusion to the long journey that began in 1923. The episode is filled with heartwarming reunions, intense battles, and poignant goodbyes, but beware, there are spoilers ahead.
1923, a spinoff from Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone series, has sparked mixed reactions among viewers. Many fans have been captivated by the historical romance between Spencer and Alex, as well as the thrilling journeys of the Dutton family during this time period.
However, the inclusion of sexually explicit storylines and an entire season focusing on characters traveling by train has made for a rather turbulent journey in Season 2.
In this episode, we’ll bring a permanent end to the adventures of Spencer, Alex, and Jacob. However, be warned and have tissues ready because this installment is quite emotional and may provoke some tears.
Banner has a change of heart in 1923 Season 2 Episode 7
On their ranch, Zane and Cara stand guard, anticipating a potential assault by Banner’s group. While they keep vigil, a concerned Liz steps out and informs them that Jack is overdue and has not yet returned.
Cara attempts to console her, disclosing that Jack had gone to the Livingston train station to assist Jacob, yet she scolds her for not speaking about it with Liz initially, unbeknownst to everyone, Jack has already passed away.
At the train station, Jacob and the sheriff are nervously anticipating Spencer’s arrival by train. They aren’t alone – Clyde and his associate, who secretly work for Banner and Whitfield, show up pretending to assist Jacob’s group.
Regarding Banner, he’s now at home, deeply troubled by the wrongdoings he committed during his time with Whitfield. “I don’t believe I’m a decent man,” he confesses to his wife. Furthermore, he acknowledges that Jacob isn’t inherently wicked, but Whitfield is.
With that, he decides to abandon everything they have and sets a plan in motion for them to depart, directing his spouse to gather their belongings and get ready to say goodbye to the town.
Alex takes a risk to save her life
In the harsh, frosty landscape, Alex remains stuck in the car alongside Hillary’s frozen form. With death looming mere minutes away, she takes a desperate step to grab Hillary’s gloves and rush out into the snow, seeking Paul’s lifeless body.
She retrieves some money from his billfold and a lighter. Rushing back to the vehicle, she tears up some documents and successfully ignites a modest blaze. It’s not a lot, but it’s enough to sustain her life temporarily.
At Whitfield’s residence, Mabel appears beaten and fatigued, suggesting a harrowing sexual experience the previous night. Over an extravagant breakfast, Whitfield shares with them that Montana is about to undergo some changes.
When Mabel expresses displeasure about the previous evening, he subjected her to another violent episode. Meanwhile, Lindy tenderly touched her as he poured scalding coffee onto her back. The staff standing outside could hear her cries for help.
In the barren expanse of the desert, Mamie Fossett and her group stumble upon the lifeless forms of Pete and Marshal Kent. Upon careful examination and discussion, they deduce that it wasn’t Teonna who committed this crime, but instead, Father Renaud.
Tensions rise for Jacob at the train station
Previously in Montana, Banner’s group started moving towards their targeted locations: the train station and the Dutton property. At the train station, Jacob observed Banner and his family attempting an exit from the town.
In this scenario, when confronted, Banner makes an effort to clarify to Jacob that his intention is to depart peacefully. However, enraged by the actions of Banner against the Dutton family, Jacob refuses to allow him to board the train. Nevertheless, he consents to let Banner’s family depart safely.
Inside the train, Spencer initiates a chat with a young lad about buffalos grazing in open fields, hinting at Wind River and Yellowstone landscapes. Sheridan-inspired discussions ensue! In a friendly gesture, Spencer swaps his lion’s tooth for the boy’s pocket knife.
Previously in Texas, Mamie discovers the campsite where Teonna was residing, alongside the bodies of Runs His Horse and Father Renaud. As they try to understand Teonna’s innocence, Mamie remains undecided about whether to intervene or let her be.
The outcome is determined for her as Teonna, concealed in proximity, fires at them. A pursuit follows, during which she successfully kills one of Mamie’s associates; however, she is ultimately apprehended and taken into custody after confessing to having murdered the nuns at the boarding school.
A big gunfight at the Dutton ranch
As they reached that point, the struggle for the Dutton ranch commences. Two ranch workers are stationed to keep vigil, but suddenly, a gunshot echoes, claiming one of them. Swiftly, Banner’s men storm the property, forcing Cara, Liz, and the rest of the workers into the house.
Cara and a few others ascend the stairs, firing down on their assailants from an elevated position. Unfortunately, Cara proves to be an exceptional marksman, but the sheer number of adversaries makes it impossible to neutralize them all simultaneously.
The situation remains quite grim in Livingston. Jacob observes as a band of Banner’s men enter. Upon noticing their chief, Banner subtly acknowledges them with a nod, attempting to conceal his plan to flee. Yet, anticipating the possible worst, he discreetly slips his stack of money into his wife’s handbag.
The reunion we’ve all been waiting for
After getting back into the vehicle, Alex’s passion seemed to be dwindling. Desperate for some sort of solution, she ignited her letters to Spencer instead. Overwhelmed with sadness, she began conversing with God, questioning why He would allow her to fall in love and give her a child only to take it away from her.
As all hope seemed to fade away, a train whistle suddenly broke the silence. Eager to send a message, she hastily poured the remaining liquor from Hillary’s flask onto the fire, igniting the entire carriage. She then attempted to signal the approaching train by waving frantically. The train was fast approaching her location.
Lo and behold, Spencer is indoors, peering out through the window. Upon seeing Alex, he identifies her and takes off running towards the train, leaping onto the tracks. In that moment, as Alex crumples to the ground in despair over missing the train, she hears a familiar voice.
In the end, Spencer sprinted towards her, and at long last, the pair found themselves reunited again. Overwhelmed with emotion, they hugged tightly, now united. With the intention of carrying her to the closest settlement, Spencer lifted her up. However, luckily, the train halted and paused for them.
Indoors, a physician arrives and locates Alex, who is suffering from frostbite on her hands and feet, visibly affected by the cold as they had turned black. Gradually undressing her to warm her up, the doctor appears worried about Alex’s pregnancy and informs them that an ambulance will be ready in Bozeman upon their arrival.
The war continues at the train station
After Banner’s men withdraw from the ranch, Cara and Zane momentarily enjoy respite, but this peace lasts only till dusk. Now, it falls on Jacob and the Sheriff to safeguard Spencer at the train station.
In a short while, the train comes to a stop at the station, prompting Banner to bid farewell to his bewildered family who then exit. As soon as the Sheriff lays eyes on an armed individual, he shouts for him to halt. Swiftly, gunfire erupts, with Jacob and the team going up against Banner’s gang.
Amidst the turmoil, Banner’s family successfully boarded the train, as other civilians hurriedly ran into the station.
Or simply:
In the confusion, Banner’s wife and son managed to get on the train, while other civilians rushed into the station.
Both versions convey the same meaning in a natural and easy-to-read manner.
In rapid sequence, events unfold with tragic consequences: The Sheriff is wounded by gunfire, yet remains alive; Spencer rescues Jacob; Banner fatally shoots Clyde, and in retaliation, the Sheriff takes Banner’s life while their family looks on, shocked and distraught. As Banner breathes his last, Jacob vows to guide his family safely to Portland.
Once the firing ceases, it’s apparent that most of Jacob’s group are still alive. Later, he meets up with Spencer on a train that continues towards Bozeman. There, an ambulance belonging to Alex is standing by.
Spencer saves the day at the ranch
Spencer presents his uncle to his spouse, then departs as they head towards the hospital; meanwhile, he assumes control and heads back to the ranch. Along their trip to the ambulance, an anxious Alex requests that Jacob ensure there’s ample fuel for their journey.
As twilight descends, the gunfire at the ranch resumes once more. Banner’s crew comes perilously close to setting our home ablaze, but somehow, Zane manages to extinguish the flames just in time. In a moment of desperation, it’s Liz who steps up, firing her rifle and taking down one of the intruders within our very walls.
Eventually, Spencer makes his appearance. Swiftly demonstrating his exceptional skills, he stands out among the group by executing an impressive sequence of feats such as simultaneously hitting the heads of two men with shots, effectively neutralizing all remaining adversaries in the residence instantaneously.
At present, both the ranch and its inhabitants remain secure. Spencer and Cara reconnect, yet their moment is disrupted by Liz, who insists on reminding everyone that Jack is yet to be found. Concerned, Cara directs two workers to follow Jack’s trail and locate him.
Alex’s condition worsens
In the hospital, Jacob is receiving care for an old gunshot wound that re-opened during a fight. When the doctor mentions the risk of iron poisoning, Jacob, who is 80 years old, retorts sharply, “Just stitch me up already!
Despite the situation, Alex is facing some tough times. Upon entering her room, Jacob encounters a group of doctors who explain that for her wellbeing, they must terminate the pregnancy. Additionally, they inform her that amputations will be necessary for her limbs. Yet, moments later, she delivers a six-month-old baby boy.
Despite the doctors’ firm belief that the newborn might not survive, Alex chooses to remain by his side, resolute in her decision to forgo surrendering him for a life-saving operation she needs herself. Jacob supports her choice and stands steadfastly by her side.
She reveals that she will call him John, thus resolving a long-standing enigma within the Dutton family. When she stands firm against Jacob’s pleas to undergo surgery, their emotions overwhelm them both. (And honestly, is there anything more heartrending than watching Harrison Ford shed tears?)
Following this revelation, Jack’s lifeless body is uncovered, prompting Cara and Spencer to rush to the hospital. Upon arrival, Spencer locates Alex and his son. They share a heartfelt goodbye before parting ways. Exhausted, Spencer dozes off beside her and awakens the next day only to discover she had passed away. Contrastingly, John appears to be pulling through.
Spencer and Whitfield’s showdown
The following day, Spencer and Jacob make their way to Whitfield’s residence. Barging inside violently, Spencer fatally wounds Whitfield in the abdomen and slays Lindy. Mabel escapes unharmed. Jacob savors Whitfield’s demise, while Spencer forces him to say Alex’s name before putting an end to his life with a gunshot, taking it away permanently.
Back in Texas, I stand trial for murder, but luckily for me, there’s no concrete evidence or witnesses to the alleged crime, so the case gets tossed out. My grandmother, Mamie, and her partner hand me a horse and advise me to seek a new place to live with my newfound freedom. With a sense of vindication, I set off westward, hearing them say, “You made the right call standing up for yourself.
At the ranch, there’s a funeral for Alex and Jack. Soon after, Liz departs from the family to return eastward, abandoning any further efforts to adapt to the Dutton lifestyle. Later, Spencer joins the cowhands to round up some untamed cattle, while an elderly Jacob and Cara remain on the porch with his infant son, having recently retired.
As they both gaze at the departing cowboys, Cara queries about Alex’s personality. Jacob describes her as “someone who spoke like a falling star.
After a while, it’s Elsa Dutton’s voice I hear once more, filling me in that Spencer never re-tied the knot, but shared a deep love with a widow who gifted him another child. As Spencer grew older, he bid farewell to this world at Alex’s graveside. In those last moments, it seemed as if Spencer and Alex danced again, their silhouettes shimmering on a radiant dance floor.
