In the remastered version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, numerous enhancements and novel elements have been added, yet certain aspects, such as Star Wars references, have been left unaltered.
Back in 2006 when Oblivion first came out, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was a recent memory for many gamers, having been released just the month before. In fact, one of Oblivion’s initial quests even made a nod to the iconic “high ground” scene’s fiery finale from the film. Fast forward 19 years later, and the “Anakin Easter egg” that was first introduced in the original game is still present in the remastered version of Oblivion.
At the start of Oblivion’s main storyline, players will be guided towards Kvatch, a town in Cyrodiil under siege. Here, they’ll find their first Oblivion Gate. Soon after entering the fiery portal into the Realm of Oblivion and defeating some foes, players will meet an NPC named Ilend Vonius, who rushes up from the left side. If players move towards that area, they’ll walk past a large pool of lava where, on closer inspection, there lies a burnt corpse on its stomach, one hand reaching out towards the player.
In the fiery world of Mustafar, Anakin Skywalker, following a lightsaber fight with his former friend Obi-Wan Kenobi, ends up as charred remains, lacking some limbs – a clear sign of the state he’s left in at the conclusion of Episode III. However, despite the severely damaged body in the Plane of Oblivion, Anakin technically lives on from this encounter with Obi-Wan. Yet, that fateful duel symbolizes the demise of Anakin Skywalker and the emergence of Darth Vader.
This year, Revenge of the Sith is marking its 20th anniversary with a theatrical rerun, making it no wonder that Oblivion Remastered retained and updated an iconic Easter egg in honor of the famous duel’s 20th anniversary.
