The initial publication date of this list was March 15, 2019, but I’ve recently included more episodes to give you even more content to enjoy!
St. Patrick’s Day stands out among other holidays due to its unique blend of tradition and festivity. Unlike many Christian holidays whose original significance often fades, St. Patrick’s Day has maintained a tradition associated with revelry and indulgence since its early days. Originally, the lifting of Lenten alcohol restrictions was part of the celebrations. Today, many people interpret this as an opportunity to wear green, drink excessively, and forget about Saint Patrick and Irish heritage for much of the day. Its closest analogue might be Halloween, another holiday steeped in mischief and upheaval that both unites and divides us in equal measure.
Currently, the essence of this holiday seems more about pandemonium. However, if you prefer to observe the lively spectacle from a distance instead of joining the crowd at your local tavern and depleting it of inexpensive drinks, we have an alternative for you – here are 11 exceptional St. Patrick’s Day TV episodes that offer a dash of magic and hedonism for you to experience vicariously.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, “Charlie Catches a Leprechaun” (Season 11, Episode 8)
Contrary to what you’d expect from Paddy’s Pub (the bar’s name), it wasn’t until season 11 that they finally aired an episode centered around St. Patrick’s Day. In an otherwise underwhelming season, “Charlie Catches a Leprechaun” stands out due to Charlie’s endearing innocence and credulity, while Dennis tries to modernize the bar with a mobile booze cart. After a man is caught stealing, he tells Charlie he’s a leprechaun, which Charlie takes seriously; setting traps to catch him, and going on a town-wide adventure with Mac to locate him. Embracing the holiday’s more fantastical, imaginative elements, this episode showcases the gang at their finest, steering clear of the usual clichés about drunkenness.
Bob’s Burgers, “Flat-Top O’ the Morning to Ya” (Season 10, Episode 16)
Bob’s Burgers has a soft spot for holiday episodes, but this one is special as it’s exclusively focused on St. Patrick’s Day. In this episode, Linda and Teddy get a bit carried away with the celebrations. It all begins innocently enough with an Irish-themed breakfast, but Bob tries to maintain a touch of elegance (and keep things non-green) in the restaurant. Meanwhile, while Bob embarks on his own adventure, Linda and Teddy encourage each other to dye beer green and eventually color every item – ketchup, mustard, fries, burgers. However, the customers aren’t too keen on eating green meat. In the end, they decide to take their themed feast out into the streets, inviting all the drunk and famished St. Patrick’s Day revelers back to the restaurant to indulge in as many Irish-themed burgers as their hearts desire.
The Afterparty, “High School” (Season 1, Episode 5)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=0ZchFcKMyG8
In this fresh blend of mystery, comedy, and nostalgia, titled “The Afterparty “, a gathering of former schoolmates become prime suspects when their mutual friend is found dead, reopening old wounds from a St. Patrick’s Day party 15 years ago. The tension builds as Chelsea (Ilana Glazer) hints at an event that once estranged the entire school community. As we journey back to St. Patrick’s Day 2006, we find ourselves eavesdropping on a house party reminiscent of teen movies – complete with fashion trends from the early 2000s, copious amounts of alcohol, and a chilling echo of the cruel whispers of high-school gossip. Keep your eyes peeled for Walt (Jamie Demetriou) subtly appearing in the background of every scene.
Sabrina the Teenage Witch, “Salem, the Boy” (Season 3, Episode 17)
On St. Patrick’s Day and Irish culture, there is usually a connection to magic, gold, and leprechauns. In the show “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” this association is emphasized when Roland transforms into a leprechaun in the episode titled “Salem, the Boy.” He gifts Sabrina three golden tickets that can fulfill her wishes; however, as we are aware, these types of wishes rarely turn out well. In this instance, Salem is transformed into a man, but his soul is placed into a student at school. This leads to the boy’s attempts to conquer the world, creating a whimsical, entertaining episode with no significant consequences but plenty of absurdity and mischief – ideal for the festive occasion.
How I Met Your Mother, “No Tomorrow” (Season 3, Episode 12)
In the TV show “How I Met Your Mother,” the group decides to indulge in the carefree spirit of St Patrick’s Day instead of staying home for a board game night and a quiet evening. Barney convinces Ted that this day has no real consequences, leading him to act recklessly without regret. The idea is that on this one night, people can behave without fear of repercussions, just like Barney does. Although Ted isn’t proud of his actions afterwards, the implication is that bad behavior on St. Patrick’s Day might not have severe consequences or may be easily forgiven – a hope shared by many partygoers.
Cheers, “Bar Wars VII: The Naked Prey” (Season 11, Episode 19)
It’s worth noting that multiple series on this list are set in bars, such as “Cheers” which is famously known for its bar-themed comedy. In one particular episode titled “St. Patrick’s Day,” the bar competes against Gary’s Olde Towne Tavern in an annual sales contest and unfortunately loses. The stakes are more about professional honor and revenue rather than unruly partying, considering that managing a bar during St. Patrick’s Day might not be much fun, but it certainly generates significant income. Don’t forget to appreciate your local bartender if you decide to visit one this weekend!
30 Rock, “St Patrick’s Day” (Season 6, Episode 12)
30 Rock boasts special episodes for virtually every holiday imaginable (a nod to “Leap Day”), and St. Patrick’s Day is no exception. This episode finds Liz, who harbors a strong distaste for the holiday, particularly towards an Irish-American ex-boyfriend named Dennis Duffy, reaching a breaking point. In an effort to avoid the festivities – something you might be contemplating, reader, regardless of its practicality – Liz tries to stay indoors. However, when Dennis unexpectedly appears at her apartment, claiming to be married, Liz must navigate the situation in her unique Liz Lemon fashion. Meanwhile, Jenna and Tracy engage in a power struggle to become the host of the St. Patrick’s Day parade. This episode encapsulates everything that makes 30 Rock great: arguments, ego clashes, and general antipathy, all amplified by the holiday spirit.
Charmed, “Lucky Charmed” (Season 5, Episode 17)
In “Lucky Charmed,” the tradition of magic is strongly featured, especially compared to other episodes. This particular St. Paddy’s Day episode presents leprechauns not as troublesome pranksters, but rather as sympathetic beings. A demon is causing havoc by killing leprechauns and stealing their magical powers. As usual, the Charmed Ones intervene to restore peace. The sisters fight against the malevolent magic and strive to overturn the leprechauns’ legendary bad fortune. This episode serves as a reminder that St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t always have to be as unfortunate as it has been in the past.
The Office, “St Patrick’s Day” (Season 6, Episode 19)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=CBpErTJwaso
Thankfully, this year’s holiday coincides with the weekend, allowing those who wish to do so to celebrate without work concerns. Contrastingly, in a memorable episode of The Office, Dunder Mifflin’s staff found themselves still at work due to being kept late by Jo. Eventually, Michael is compelled to confront Jo and grant the employees permission to leave. She eventually gives in, resulting in a satisfying conclusion as the team gets to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a pub, just as St. Patrick himself might have intended.
Home Improvement, “Desperately Seeking Willow” (Season 7, Episode 19)
In this “Home Improvement” episode, Wilson’s visiting niece Willow overindulges during St. Patrick’s Day festivities and goes missing, causing a panic and prompting a search party. On the other hand, in the “Tool Time” segment, it’s a double dose of holiday fun as Tim and Al celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with green outfits, Guinness decorations, Irish DIY projects, and a humorous limerick from Tim. The episode showcases that any holiday, including on a Tuesday, can be celebrated by embracing the spirit – perhaps simply painting your toolbox green. Of course, it’s essential not to end up lost like Willow!
2 Broke Girls, “And the Kilt Trip” (Season 3, Episode 19)
For those of us who are more reserved, some festive occasions might feel like a forced attempt to join the excitement, even when it doesn’t quite suit our personality. This is exactly what happens in the episode “2 Broke Girls’ “And the Kilt Trip” where Caroline, wanting to be part of Max and her friends’ group, ends up participating in their St. Patrick’s Day parade antics. However, the unexpected outcome is that she doesn’t enjoy herself and yearns instead for the comfort of her familiar holiday traditions at the Plaza Hotel.
