Certain TV shows are so well-made that they don’t need to be remade. While Hollywood loves revisiting familiar stories, the results are often mixed. For every successful reboot, like Netflix’s Fuller House, there’s a less successful one, such as And Just Like That…, which can actually hurt the original show’s characters.
Several popular TV shows are getting reboots in 2026, like Scrubs and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which highlights which stories are worth revisiting. It feels natural to see a new generation of doctors at Sacred Heart, and there’s always potential for a fresh, strong, and interesting Slayer.
But some classic shows are best left untouched. Certain acclaimed series – from chilling horror stories to long-running medical dramas – achieved perfection the first time and don’t need a reboot.
The Leftovers (2014-2017)
The Leftovers is an unusual mystery show that actually provides satisfying answers by the end, which makes a second viewing difficult. It’s emotionally resonant throughout, culminating in a beautiful scene where Nora Durst and Kevin Garvey share a deeply personal conversation about her past and family.
A continuation focusing on Nora and Kevin’s relationship now, or a prequel showing what their lives were like before everyone disappeared, could both be interesting ideas. However, The Leftovers was a nearly flawless show – a powerfully moving story told over three excellent seasons, and truly one of HBO’s best of the decade. It feels risky to revisit such a complete and satisfying work.
Succession (2018-2023)
After four fantastic seasons, Succession felt complete, so a reboot of the HBO series wouldn’t really work. The show consistently showcased the Roy family’s intense and competitive nature from beginning to end.
Each character’s attempt to take control of Waystar RoyCo leads them down a fascinating and individual path. A continuation of the story could center on Kendall’s future, or perhaps follow the newly appointed CEO, Tom Wambsgans. However, it’s worth considering whether that would work – Succession has a very distinct style, and part of the show’s appeal is how completely it draws you into its ruthless corporate environment.
It honestly feels like there aren’t any fresh stories left to tell. After following this family’s struggles for so long, it feels right to let them move on.
The Haunting Of Hill House (2018)
Of Mike Flanagan’s horror series on Netflix, The Haunting of Hill House is by far the strongest, and shouldn’t be revisited. A continuation of this impactful and frightening story would likely disappoint and diminish the power of the original’s excellent narrative.
Even though the Crain siblings are starting to heal from their difficult childhood, creating another series about them would be a mistake. Because recovery isn’t a straight path, a new Hill House story would likely just revisit the same painful themes as the original, and that wouldn’t be very interesting.
It’s difficult to picture any future episode being as powerfully unsettling as classic ghosts like the Bent-Neck Lady. And honestly, no new installment could likely top episode 5, “The Bent-Neck Lady,” which reveals the ghost’s shocking backstory and includes one of the most brilliantly executed twists in horror television.
The Good Place (2016-2020)
With its perfect ending, The Good Place deserves to remain finished. The story has reached a natural conclusion for its characters, and bringing them back for a revival wouldn’t make sense. A reboot with new characters also feels pointless, as the established version of the afterlife doesn’t need revisiting.
The Good Place was a truly unique show, unlike anything else on television. What made it so special was the fantastic connection between the four main characters – Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason – as they navigated this bizarre new world. Trying to recreate the show wouldn’t work because a big part of the fun was discovering the surprising secrets of the setting along with them.
Mindhunter (2017-2019)
I was so disappointed when Netflix ended Mindhunter after just two seasons! There was some hope, though, that the story might continue with three movies. I remember reading that Charlize Theron, one of the show’s producers, said it all depended on whether David Fincher, the director and another producer, wanted to pursue that option. It really seemed like he held the key to bringing Mindhunter back in some form.
Even though more episodes or movies following the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit would be great, the first two seasons are so well-done that they’re incredibly satisfying as they are.
With unsettling stories inspired by real serial killers like Wayne Williams and Charles Manson, and a difficult storyline about Holden Ford’s mental state, this isn’t always an easy show to watch. Despite this, it’s one of Netflix’s best-reviewed crime dramas and still offers the most compelling exploration of the criminal mind on television.
The Wire (2002-2008)
Considered one of the best shows from HBO’s acclaimed era, The Wire stands out for its realistic portrayal of the Baltimore drug scene and its memorable characters. It’s a frequently mentioned drama from the 2000s, and helped establish the trend of ‘must-see TV’ on Sunday nights.
Reimagining The Wire would probably face immediate backlash, and it would be hard to create a new group of characters that resonate as strongly as the originals. Revisiting an older version of Jimmy McNulty wouldn’t be very compelling, as his storyline already reached a natural conclusion.
Now that Jimmy’s life is improving, it seems likely he’ll face new challenges – every compelling story needs some kind of struggle. But is creating those difficulties the best approach?
ER (1994-2009)

Given that R. Scott Gemmill, a producer on ER, also created The Pitt, and ER stars John Wells and Noah Wyle are executive producers on the new show (with Wyle also starring), it’s tempting to see The Pitt as a continuation of ER. However, it’s a completely original series, and its unique style demonstrates why a simple ER remake would never work.
Launching a new hospital drama is challenging these days, but The Pitt stands out. Unlike typical medical shows, each episode covers just one hour of a shift, and it’s surprisingly effective. ER remains a benchmark for the genre, known for its realistic portrayals of life and death, compelling characters, and memorable relationships.
It’s difficult to imagine a new ER series being anything more than a repeat of the original. The show’s most memorable moments – like the powerful storyline about the pregnancy in “Love’s Labor Lost” and Doug Ross’s dramatic rescue in “Hell and High Water” – would be impossible to recreate. With the upcoming Scrubs reboot focusing on young doctors just starting out, a revival of ER doesn’t seem needed.
Gilmore Girls (2000-2007, 2016)
Despite a lot of excitement, many of the episodes in the 2016 Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life didn’t live up to expectations. While returning to the charming town of Stars Hollow seemed appealing, and fans were eager to see what happened next for Rory and Lorelai, the episodes largely fell flat.
The revival doesn’t live up to expectations, largely because of complicated issues in the characters’ personal and work lives. The surprising reveal that Rory is pregnant also undermines the otherwise decent series finale. Ultimately, it’s probably best to remember Rory and Lorelai’s close bond as a cherished part of the show’s history.
Season 7 of Gilmore Girls doesn’t quite feel like the other seasons, and that’s because the original creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, wasn’t working on it. Despite this, most of the episodes are still charming, comforting, and enjoyable. It’s easy to want to skip the revival and just rewatch the first few seasons, especially when autumn arrives.
Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
With its surprising plot, risky environment, and the complicated relationship between Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad is truly an exceptional show. Although it’s understandable why AMC might want to create another season, it would be a challenge to live up to the original’s quality.
There’s already a Breaking Bad movie and a prequel series, Better Call Saul, that both work well independently. Better Call Saul focuses on Jimmy McGill, and his transformation into Saul Goodman is just as compelling and disturbing as Walter White’s story. Plus, the 2019 film El Camino serves as a sequel, primarily following Jesse’s journey.
Walt’s battle with lung cancer and his turn to drug dealing are central to the original series. Both Better Call Saul and El Camino brilliantly build upon his story, but through the eyes of other characters. A prequel focused solely on Walt isn’t necessary, as Breaking Bad already explores the most compelling period of his life.
The Sopranos (1999-2007)
Many crime shows have attempted to replicate the success of The Sopranos, but none have quite measured up. While series like Sons of Anarchy and Ozark also explore crime and complicated family dynamics, no character compares to Tony Soprano.
Tony is one of the first examples of a complex anti-hero. Though he often appears as a tough and frightening mob boss, the show also reveals his vulnerability through therapy sessions, where he struggles to express his emotions. This deep exploration of a character’s inner world was unusual for crime dramas at the time.
The 2021 film The Many Saints of Newark explores Tony Soprano’s early life, and it’s powerfully brought to life by Michael Gandolfini – the son of the original actor who played Tony. That alone makes the film worthwhile.
A reboot of The Sopranos raises a big question: what could it even be about? With Tony’s likely death at the end of the series and the passing of James Gandolfini, bringing him back isn’t an option. It’s difficult to picture the show working without him, and a storyline focused on adult Meadow and AJ doesn’t seem particularly compelling.
