After releasing Creature Commandos, Superman, and Season 2 of Peacemaker, the DC Universe is starting to gain traction. The next project, coming to theaters next summer, will be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This film is unique because it’s the first DCU story directly based on existing comic book material, specifically Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book series.
The upcoming Supergirl movie is a crucial test for the new DC Universe. It’s the first DCU project not written or directed by co-CEO James Gunn, with Craig Gillespie taking the helm. With the movie releasing soon, DC Studios is preparing to release a teaser trailer this week, giving fans a clearer look at the potential of the DCU. Although it’s just a teaser, and not a full trailer, it will showcase important elements of the film, similar to how the Superman trailer generated excitement last year. Here’s what to expect from the teaser.
A standout addition to James Gunn’s Superman movie was Krypto, Superman’s super-powered dog. Making his first live-action appearance, Krypto quickly became a fan favorite. This version of Krypto is notably more mischievous than previous depictions, as Gunn based his personality and even his look on his own dog, Ozu.
I was so thrilled to see Krypto in Superman, and I’m even more excited that he’s going to be in Supergirl too! Apparently, this Krypto isn’t the same one from the comics – he’s not Superman’s dog, which explains why he acted a little strange in the first movie. Since he’s going to be a big part of Supergirl, I’m really hoping the trailer shows him off and helps connect this movie to the wider DCU. They used Krypto a lot in the marketing for Superman, and I’m guessing they’ll do the same for Supergirl – which is totally fine with me, because he’s awesome!
Although the DC Extended Universe didn’t achieve the same popularity or success as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it still produced a number of films over ten years. Despite building out its world with places like Atlantis and Themyscira, it never fully delved into the more fantastical, outer-space elements of the DC universe.
The upcoming Supergirl story will largely unfold in space, acting as a grand adventure and giving fans their first glimpse of the cosmic side of the DC Universe. Just as James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was the first Marvel film to fully explore space, Supergirl will do the same for DC. With many DC characters already existing in space – like the Green Lanterns and New Gods – Supergirl is key to expanding the DCU’s universe. The teaser trailer needs to show that it has a unique look and feel, different from Marvel and other sci-fi franchises.
The upcoming Supergirl project marks a slight shift for the DC Universe, as it’s the first not directly led by James Gunn. Although Gunn is still producing, he’s entrusted the directing to Craig Gillespie, known for films like I, Tonya and Cruella. Early DCU projects have strongly reflected Gunn’s creative vision, as he’s been heavily involved in their development.
James Gunn has shared his vision for the DC Universe, where each movie will have its own unique feel. Because of this, the first trailer for Supergirl should showcase a different style and mood compared to Gunn’s Superman film. Given the source material for Supergirl, it should be easy to hint at that difference in the teaser trailer.
A comic book movie often relies heavily on a strong villain, and the upcoming Supergirl movie will introduce a brand new one. This differs from Superman, which featured the well-known Lex Luthor. Just as the first Superman trailer gave audiences a glimpse of Nicholas Hoult as Lex, the initial look at Supergirl should do the same for its villain.
Matthias Schoenaerts will play the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills in the upcoming Supergirl movie. Krem is a dangerous alien with great power who is responsible for many deaths. The movie’s trailer will likely give viewers a first look at his evil plans, building up to a major showdown with Supergirl (Kara Zor-El).
The first look at the Supergirl movie probably won’t reveal much about the plot, but we can expect to see some of the main characters. Besides Supergirl, Krem, and Krypto, Ruthye Marye Knoll will also have an important supporting role in the film.
I’m so excited for the new season of Supergirl! It looks like Ruthye is going to be a really central character, driven by a desire for revenge against Krem for what he did to her family. I can’t wait to see Eve Ridley as Ruthye – the teaser really hints at what she’ll bring to the role!
I’m seriously hyped for Lobo to show up in the Supergirl movie! It’s awesome that Jason Momoa, who was amazing as Aquaman, is taking on the role. He’s a huge star thanks to Aquaman and even Minecraft, so he’s going to bring a lot to the film. Honestly, a lot of fans, myself included, have been wanting to see Momoa as Lobo for ages – it’s a dream come true!
Before Jason Momoa became famous as Aquaman, many fans thought he’d be ideal for the role of Lobo. He’s also a longtime fan of the character, and now he’ll be playing Lobo in Supergirl. DC Studios may release a short preview, but won’t reveal everything about the movie right away. Still, with so much anticipation, Momoa’s version of Lobo definitely needs to be featured.
Milly Alcock briefly appeared as Superman, giving fans their first look at the costume she’ll wear in her upcoming movie. While the suit will have a few small changes for the 2025 film, it will largely stay true to the comic book version, including the red skirt and occasional trench coat.
Supergirl’s costume in the new DCU movie is a significant improvement over any live-action version we’ve seen before. The upcoming trailer should give us a good look at actress Milly Alcock wearing it, as she’ll likely be sporting the suit throughout the film.
Because it’s a superhero movie, visuals are key, and the Supergirl trailer needs to show fans what kind of action to expect. The Woman of Tomorrow comic book features plenty of exciting scenes – like Supergirl battling pirates and Ruthye fighting a dinosaur-like monster – that the movie will likely include.
The action in the upcoming Supergirl movie will likely be a refreshing change for viewers, as it’s shaping up to be quite different from previous Supergirl content. The film may even include intense sword fights, staying true to the original source material. These unique action sequences will help Supergirl stand out from Superman and offer audiences a fresh take on the superhero genre.
Beyond Tom King’s captivating story, the artwork in the Woman of Tomorrow comic book is truly exceptional. Bilquis Evely’s distinctive visuals have become so well-loved that the upcoming movie will need to include some of them.
The cover of the Woman of Tomorrow comic, featuring Supergirl with a sword, is particularly striking. It’s an unusual image for the character, hinting at a story steeped in mythology and setting it apart from other Supergirl tales. The comic also incorporates other fantastical elements, like Kara riding a unicorn, which would be visually impressive on screen and could become a major draw for audiences.
With Supergirl as the central focus of the new film, Milly Alcock will carry a lot of the story. Viewers briefly met her version of Kara Zor-El in Superman, during the Fortress of Solitude sequence, and it’s a fresh take on the character, distinct from previous portrayals in the CW series and The Flash movie. This Supergirl will be bolder and more outspoken, yet still appealing, and will have a very different personality than her cousin, Superman.
The initial trailer needs to really showcase what makes Alcock’s Supergirl special to get audiences excited, as her performance will likely be key to the film’s success. Alcock was a fan favorite in House of the Dragon, so emphasizing her involvement could draw those viewers in. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has thrived on strong, memorable characters, and the DC Universe is building that same foundation with Superman and Peacemaker. Now, Supergirl needs to become a character fans connect with, and the teaser trailer is the perfect place to start building that connection.
