One of the widely cherished series from the past two decades is The CW’s franchise. With intricate plot twists, character resurrections, and changing narrative elements, it’s understandable that things might become a bit confusing at times. Villains appear and disappear, with some leaving a greater impression than others. Some relics only affect certain creatures, while their power may diminish over time. The addition of time travel and multiple dimensions to the storylines has made them somewhat unstable.
Sam and Dean, the main characters, have died and come back multiple times throughout the series. Originally planned to last only 5 seasons, ‘Supernatural’ was extended due to fan demand, resulting in some confusing plot points over time.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Were Defeated & Never Replaced
In Season 5 of Supernatural, we encounter the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. These four characters possess rings which enable them to assume human form. Interestingly, their rings serve a dual purpose – they are not only essential for these beings to appear as humans but also for unlocking Lucifer’s prison and initiating the apocalypse. Among the Four Horsemen, Death appears older and somewhat exempt from the regulations governing the other three. However, each one symbolizes an inherent trait within human nature that is crucial in bringing about the end of days.
Horseman | Actor | First Appearance |
Death | Julian Richings | Season 5, Episode 21, “Two Minutes to Midnight” |
War | Titus Welliver | Season 5, Episode 2, “Good God, Y’ALL” |
Pestilence | Matt Frewer | Season 5, Episode 19, “Hammer of the Gods” |
Famine | James Otis | Season 5, Episode 14, “My Bloody Valentine” |
Death has coexisted with life for an equal duration, leading some to argue that his storyline is unique and independent from those of his brothers. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that Death will be succeeded by a reaper because the role of Death is essential to the functioning of the universe. Conversely, when Sam and Dean vanquish the other horsemen, their roles are not refilled. The horsemen played significant roles in Season 5, which is often hailed as the best season of Supernatural, but they eventually lost their prominence as main antagonists in a solitary episode.
A Single Attack Wiped Out the Entire Secret Organization
As a movie buff, I can tell you that season 8 of “Supernatural” introduced me to an intriguing group – The Men of Letters. These were a clandestine organization, deeply immersed in the arcane world, who had been tracking magic and monsters for ages. They amassed data and resources to help mankind survive and combat the supernatural threats lurking in the shadows. They often collaborated with hunters, providing them with essential intel or tools to aid in their battles against the creatures that go bump in the night.
At first glance, it appears as though the Order of Men of Letters has ceased to exist. However, it’s later discovered that there’s a British branch of this group that remains operational and well-equipped. This is evident when they supply the Winchesters with the hyperbolic pulse generator – a device instrumental in their battle against Lucifer. A confrontation between the Winchesters and the British Men of Letters results in the destruction of their entire British base, and a single attack on an American base weakens their influence across the continent. Considering their decades of experience and resources, this swift defeat seems unexpected.
The Prophet’s Passing Had Little Impact on Sam and Dean
Season 7 of the popular series, Supernatural, is often seen as a rocky phase in its narrative journey. However, amidst the bumps, one standout moment was the introduction of beloved character Kevin Tran. Before being chosen as the next prophet by the lord, Kevin was a diligent young student, wholly engrossed in his studies. Guarded by angels, he began to decipher tablets until he was abducted by the Leviathans. The Leviathans aimed to have him read their tablet, but this plan was disrupted when Crowley’s demons intervened, leading to Kevin being taken under their protection. As forces of good and evil vied for his assistance, Kevin was thrust into a world he never knew existed.
In the TV show Supernatural, Kevin is usually under pressure throughout his screen time. Despite being unwillingly placed in this role, he aids Sam and Dean to the utmost of his abilities. For a significant part of Season 8, Kevin works tirelessly to decode the demon tablet for the Winchesters while Sam performs trials aimed at permanently closing the gates of Hell. In the ninth episode of Season 9, following Metatron’s orders, the angel Galadreel kills Kevin in the Men of Letters bunker by smiting him. This death comes unexpectedly and is not heavily foreshadowed. Regrettably, Sam and Dean seldom refer to Kevin after this event.
The Rotating Door of Leaders and Factions is Confusing
In the final episode of season 8, audiences see all the angels plummet from heaven due to Metatron’s magic. Throughout this season, Metatron deceives Castiel into assisting him in what Castiel believes are the angel trials meant to secure Heaven’s gates. However, Metatron is actually misleading Castiel and using the objects gathered by Castiel to cast a spell that forces all angels out of heaven. This action sets the main storyline for season 9, as angels struggle to adapt to life on Earth and establish different groups vying to return to heaven. The outcome presents a confusing sequence of events that changes every week, resembling a chaotic chain-of-command.
In this fictional universe, the heads of the dominant groups are angels called Bartholomew and Malachi. Bartholomew is portrayed as a formidable warrior angel, once serving under Castiel during the conflict that ensued following the first apocalypse. On the other hand, Malachi, also known as the Rebel Angel, employs a harsher tactic and instills this in his followers. However, Bartholomew is quickly defeated by Castiel after an entire season’s worth of character development, when they engage in conversation about Castiel joining Bartholomew’s cause. Malachi’s end is even less dramatic as he is slain by the angel Galadreel off-screen. The Angel War and its leaders ultimately proved to be a season filled with filler episodes and plotlines that led nowhere significant.
The Oldest Beasts are Bested by Borax
In the fictional series “Supernatural,” God’s initial grand endeavor was the creation of the Leviathans before man or angels. Unfortunately, these ancient beings, also known as the Old Ones, turned out to be a disastrous mistake due to their ravenous nature, consuming anything they encountered. To contain these destructive forces and protect His other creations, God devised Purgatory as a realm for them. Consequently, when Castiel unwittingly releases these primordial beings at the end of Season 6 by opening a gateway to Purgatory and ingesting all the souls confined there, viewers braced themselves for extensive damage wrought by the Leviathans.
At first glance, the Leviathans seem invincible. Even losing their heads doesn’t stop them; they regrow. Their age surpasses that of angels, causing even angels to flee rather than confront them in combat. The oldest monsters seem powerless against the Leviathan, as demonstrated when the Alpha Vampire submits to their commands. So, when it was disclosed that borax is the key to defeating the Old Ones, fans found this solution surprisingly anticlimactic. During a cleaning spree at Bobby’s house, and borax, a common ingredient in cleaning products, accidentally comes into contact with their Leviathan prisoner.
The Fiends of Hell Go From Big Problem to Filler in the Span of a Few Seasons
Initially, demons played a significant role in the early seasons of ‘Supernatural’. The initial plotline that kickstarted the series revolved around the demon Azazel and his killing of Mary Winchester. The first two seasons primarily followed the Winchesters as they searched for their father and hunted Azazel to avenge their mother. In the season finale of the second season, a significant event occurred – the opening of the Devil’s Gate led to the release of numerous beings from Hell. This episode served as a pivotal moment in the series, as demons became one of the main adversaries. Apart from exorcism, the Winchesters’ only means of defeating demons was through the use of a demon-slaying knife.
In my humble opinion as a movie reviewer, Season 3 of Supernatural takes an exhilarating twist when the seven deadly sins are unleashed, presenting one of the most daunting challenges modern hunters have ever encountered. These sins, once confined in the depths of Hell during the Dark Ages, now wreak havoc on Earth, leaving our beloved character, Bobby, clearly rattled.
In the early seasons, Crossroads demons were a formidable foe for Sam and Dean, known for their cunning ability to deceive humans into making soul-binding deals that ultimately proved detrimental. However, as the series progresses, these demons seem to lose their potency, becoming commonplace and easily vanquished.
Later on in Supernatural, demons transition more into the ‘monster of the week’ category, serving as episodic threats rather than the season-long antagonists that dominated the show during its initial years.
Chuck was Involved in Supernatural All Along
In Season 5 of Supernatural, Sam and Dean find themselves in Heaven, where they meet the angel Joshua in a beautiful garden. At first, they’re pursued and assaulted by another angel, Zachariah, until Joshua steps in, asking Zachariah to halt because God wants to communicate with them. It seems that both Zachariah and God are viewed as ‘gardeners’ in this context. Desiring to discuss the impending apocalypse on Earth with God in hopes of His intervention for humanity’s sake, Sam and Dean approach Joshua. However, it’s made clear that not everything Joshua reveals is the full truth.
In simpler terms, Joshua is correct when he claims that God has intervened to save Sam and Dean so far. For instance, God transported them onto an airplane when Lucifer’s cage was opened. Moreover, He has been helping them. Joshua remarks that this is the most God has done for someone in a while, but it turns out that viewers learn later on that God, disguised as Chuck, was actually much more involved than Joshua admitted. In reality, Chuck was writing the story as it progressed throughout all of season 5. Chuck knows about everything that’s happening and guides Sam and Dean towards the right path during the entire apocalypse-filled season.
The Storyline was Fulfilled Right Up To Its Culmination Then Abandoned Abruptly
As a dedicated fan of “Supernatural”, I can’t help but reflect on season 8 when the character Sam Winchester embarked on the Trials of God. The prophet Kevin Tran, in his wisdom, revealed these trials to the brothers via his interpretation of the demon tablet. These tasks, as it turned out, were meticulously designed by none other than God for those who wished to close the gates of Hell forever.
Throughout the season, we follow Sam’s arduous journey as he tackles each trial, with its consequences taking a heavy toll on him. Ever since completing the first trial, it’s been evident that something was amiss with Sam’s health. His condition deteriorated significantly when he pursued Metatron, collapsing from a scorching fever of 107 degrees. In a desperate bid to save his life, Dean had no choice but to plunge him into an ice-filled tub.
This scene was undeniably one of the most harrowing moments in “Supernatural” history, demonstrating the extreme lengths that Sam would go to save humanity, and the unwavering bond between the two brothers. The trials may have been designed by God, but they served as a poignant reminder of the cost of such divine intervention.
Trial | Episode | Air Date |
Kill a hellhound and bathe in its blood | Trial and Error | February 13, 2013 |
Rescue an innocent soul from Hell | Taxi Driver | April 3, 2013 |
Cure a demon | Sacrifice | May 15, 2013 |
Following that event, the sole task left is to exorcise a demon. Eventually, Sam and Dean manage to capture Crowley and imprison him in a church, and they start the process of exorcising him. While Sam persists with his attempts to exorcise Crowley, Dean meets Naomi and she warns him that if Sam completes the trials, it will result in his death. Castiel transports Dean to Sam, and Dean shares this information with Sam, who learns that continuing could lead to his own demise. After a great deal of persuasion, Sam consents to halt these actions as they witness angels falling from Heaven. From here on, the impact of the trials and the season 8 storyline become less significant, making the main storyline of the eighth season largely irrelevant in the broader context of Supernatural.
He Ages at a Rapid Pace Until He Doesn’t
In a different phrasing:
And the human character named Kelly Kline, endowing him with immense Nephilim strength. Before his birth, Jack’s powers manifest as he assigns Castiel as his protector and assists Castiel in vanquishing the demon Dagon while still within his mother’s womb. Assuming that since Jack is Lucifer’s offspring, he will be inherently evil, Kelly contemplates destroying herself and Jake. However, it is after Jack’s birth that we, as viewers, get a glimpse of the full extent of his extraordinary abilities.
From the very beginning, I seemed like any typical newborn, but as the Winchesters soon observed, things were far from ordinary – I started growing up incredibly quickly. In just a matter of days, I found myself a young man. The cause behind my accelerated growth was never disclosed, nor was the reason for it halting ever discussed. Regardless of my mature appearance, my mind remained that of a child, requiring me to learn and understand my newfound abilities from the ground up. If my rapid aging had started since the moment I was born, it would only be natural that I should be much older after surviving just a few short weeks.
The Supernatural Agents Find Themselves Behind the Scenes Often
Throughout their careers as hunters, Sam and Dean have had to think outside the box to gather information about the numerous cases they’ve encountered. This has involved hacking secure and password-protected computer systems, pretending to be law enforcement officers, and even resorting to fraudulent credit card use for meals and accommodation. Since monster hunting doesn’t come with a hefty paycheck, they’ve had to improvise. They always have drawers stocked with disposable phones and fake badges ready to use in a pinch, whenever a clue arrives from some distant agency.
It might seem surprising, given all the high-profile and violent cases they’ve been involved in over the 15 seasons of Supernatural, that the Winchesters have seldom, if ever, been caught for their alleged illegal activities. You’d expect that with the FBI’s resources, at least a couple of agents would find it peculiar that these two individuals keep showing up at crime scenes. Additionally, the Winchesters often play around with their fake agent names, usually adopting the last names of famous musicians. Given how popular some of these musician names are, you’d think they’d be caught out as impostors a few times.
