The Rookie is a TV show that focuses on the police department of Los Angeles’ Mid-Wilshire district. It primarily revolves around John Nolan and his team of LAPD officers as they climb the ranks within their department, dealing with cases and advancing their careers. To date, The Rookie has completed seven seasons, and the eighth season is set to premiere in early 2026.
Returned was Oscar Hutchinson, fresh out of prison at the start of Season 7. Alongside him came numerous queries left unanswered, as well as several plot threads that could only be resolved over time.
A Date With A Gang Member Was Probably A Bad Start
Among the two newcomers to Mid-Wilshire this season, Miles Penn initially stayed out of the dating scene due to his longstanding relationship with Camilla, whom he’d been seeing since college. For the majority of the season, Camilla was in Sugarland, Texas, accumulating funds for her move to LA. Upon visiting Miles, however, their paths diverged as they struggled to envision a future where their aspirations could coalesce harmoniously.
In the season 7 finale, Miles makes his return to dating, but unfortunately it’s with Rina Davitt, someone from the Eastern Front. Their initial date ends with Miles fleeing the restaurant and being pursued by members of the Eastern Front. Despite having assistance from a newly-promoted Lucy, this incident has left Miles more cautious about dating in LA. Will Miles venture into dating again in season 8? And will his next date go smoothly?
Their Relationship Looks Like It’s Serious
In The Rookie, Season 5, Episode 13, fans were introduced to Rodge, whom they later learned had been dating Celina since an unspecified year. At first, their relationship was casual, but it became more significant when Celina started investigating the theft of Rodge’s belongings in . The turning point for fans came during a prison riot at Mid-Wilshire, where Rodge was hit in the head while playing his guitar. This incident showcased Celina’s genuine concern and care for Rodge.
During his temporary stay with Lucy and Celina, Rodge demonstrates his worth by mending the Wi-Fi issue in their apartment and aiding Lucy’s friend Rachel at a gathering. A strained dinner with Lucy’s roommate Tamara, Tim, and newcomers Seth adds tension to their living arrangement. As Rodge’s rat problem at home disappears, the series concludes with Celina casually suggesting to Lucy that they establish a schedule for significant others visiting their apartment now that Lucy and Tim are back together. Is it possible that Celina and Rodge might share an apartment in the future?
It’s Definitely Helping Her Marriage
In season 7, the gap between their professions became apparent when Nyla, a law enforcement officer, voiced her irritation towards James’ circle, who often criticized her job as a police officer. Tired of the criticism and slow pace of change within her department, Nyla initiated a project in the following episodes to address issues like excessive force and racial profiling within the LAPD. Recognizing James’ role as a community activist would be beneficial, she appointed him to lead this program. This move significantly enhanced their relationship.
In the storyline, prior to Nyla making substantial strides with her movement, an unexpected turn of events unfolds. Initially, I witness James being involved with another woman and suffering a drive-by shooting incident. Remarkably resilient, James demonstrates his loyalty towards Nyla by declaring his faithfulness upon regaining consciousness. With all of Nyla’s remaining resources poured into James’ recovery following his surgery, there appears to be little progress on her reform movement.
The question remains: Will the movement resume in season 8 for both Nyla and James? Or was it merely a temporary measure to mend their marriage?
So Far, They Seem In Need Of Help
Fans were ecstatic when Lucy successfully completed the sergeant’s test in her career, a feat she had been striving for most of her professional life. Although Grey could secure her a job at Mid-Wilshire, it regrettably meant Lucy would work the graveyard shift. In the final episode, viewers joined Lucy as she began her first shift with the ‘Dream Team’, a group who were known to be diligent, but ironically found themselves sleeping throughout the entire night shift.
When Lucy found herself in a tight spot, it was the ‘Dream Team’ who stepped up to assist her. They helped Miles break free from an awkward date and avoid being pursued by the Eastern Front. However, their decision to slumber through their duty instead of supporting Lucy when she needed them most showed a lack of regard and unity. With Lucy having worked tirelessly to earn her sergeant rank, one might wonder if ‘The Dream Team’ will keep up their reputation or if Lucy will be left with the task of molding them into a more responsible unit.
A Compulsive Liar Can’t Benefit The LAPD
In the first episode of season 7, Seth Ridley also became a newcomer at Mid-Wilshire, much like Miles. But unlike Miles, Seth’s early days in his profession were marked by trouble. During The Rookie’s Season 7, Episode 8, “Wildfire”, Seth almost caused disaster when he didn’t pass on information about a road closure, leading Lucy and Tim to get trapped in a wildfire. As a result of this incident, Seth was dismissed from Mid-Wilshire in Season 7, Episode 10, “Chaos Agent”, after he refused to undergo a blood test to verify his cancer diagnosis.
After Seth came back, none of the officers welcomed him warmly due to rumors about his dishonesty. In an effort to regain their trust, Seth was wounded in a raid and subsequently needed to have his leg amputated. John suggested that Seth could still pursue a career with law enforcement if he maintained honesty and made progress in his recovery. Will Seth rejoin the LAPD in the future? If so, how will the Mid-Wilshire team handle the damage to their trust in him?
Wesley Has to Step Up If The Race is Part of His Plan
In season 7, Wesley’s career takes numerous unexpected turns and detours. During this time, an old client of his, Harrison Novak, reappears and threatens a sorority house with rape. This presents a significant moral dilemma for Wesley, as he had successfully defended Harrison in the past. Additionally, Wesley encounters various complications involving Monica, who often becomes embroiled in cases involving the Mid-Wilshire crew, sometimes in ways that are unforeseen.
In the seventeenth episode of Season 7 in The Rookie, titled “The Mutiny and the Bounty,” Wesley experiences significant professional shifts. The Eastern Front puts pressure on him to abandon a case against Colin Burns, a fellow member, by threatening to expose Sean del Monte’s son as a drug addict. Since Sean is not only Wesley’s friend but also a DA candidate, this revelation could jeopardize his chances of becoming the District Attorney. By the episode’s end, Sean decides to withdraw from the race, thereby creating an opportunity for another candidate to step forward. Could Wesley seize this chance and run for the District Attorney position? Would he even consider it as an option?
Having Children Was A Big Goal Of Theirs
In season 6, John and Bailey spent the entire season debating whether or not to have kids. While Bailey had never had children, John, who had a grown son from a prior marriage, thought he was done with having more. Despite both wanting kids, Bailey was heartbroken when she discovered her chances of having them were slim. This prompted a conversation about the possibility of adopting instead.
In “Three Billboards,” Episode 13 of Season 7 in the show “The Rookie,” John and Bailey encounter a setback in their adoption process. A series of billboards were erected around LA, damaging the reputation of some Mid-Wilshire officers, including John. This could potentially impact their assessment as prospective parents since they are scheduled to meet with a social worker. To avoid this, they conceal the issue. However, the social worker finds out about the billboard and notices their propensity for getting into perilous situations, causing her to question whether they can provide a safe home for a child. So, will John and Bailey be able to persuade the social worker of their parenting skills? Or does this mark the end of their path to parenthood?
Both Have A Reason To See Him Dead
In one of the most significant plots of The Rookie’s seventh season, the notorious villain Oscar masterminded a manhunt that shook the series. Working in cahoots with Monica, he manipulated her for vital information to orchestrate a jailbreak. The hunt for Jason consumed the LAPD during the first part of the season. However, when the Southern Front became involved, it led to the emergence of a hitman named Malvado, causing tension in John and Bailey’s partnership as she teamed up with him to locate Jason, putting strain on their relationship.
In “The Rookie”, during Season 7, Episode 18 titled “The Good, The Bad, and the Oscar”, it is John who gets kidnapped by Oscar. This happens when John and Nyla track down Oscar in the desert, where Oscar had hidden some diamonds with an accomplice. Although Nyla eventually manages to save John, Oscar successfully escapes. His escape now puts him in a precarious position, as both Monica, who needs his resources, and the LAPD, who aim to put him back behind bars, are after him. The question arises: Will Monica’s extensive network or the LAPD locate Oscar first? Additionally, could one of their pursuits lead to the tragic outcome of Oscar’s death?
Monica Always Seems To Return
Similar to Oscar, Monica often appears unexpectedly among the Mid-Wilshire team. It’s implied that she played a role in Oscar and Jason’s prison break, a deal struck for information about those working against her. Moreover, Monica hired a woman named Denise to steal the identity card of a government official during a bus hijack. While viewers may not understand her motive explicitly, they know that Monica is connected to the theft incident.
In the seventeenth episode of Season 7 in “The Rookie,” titled “The Good, the Bad, and the Oscar,” Monica’s connection to federal information surfaces more distinctly. The Mid-Wilshire team is called to the courthouse where they encounter a suspect who has traded top-secret U.S. national intelligence for immunity – it turns out to be Monica. It’s now evident why she needed the keycard, but the specifics of the information she possesses and her reason for seeking immunity from the federal government remain unclear.
In other words: What classified data does Monica hold about the U.S. government? And why does she need protection from federal prosecution?
Lucy’s Promotion Gives Chenford New Hope
In the popular series The Rookie, one of the heart-wrenching breakups was between Tim and Lucy, fondly called ‘Chenford’. This was due to Tim’s struggles with emotional openness. In Season 7, Episode 8, titled “Wildfire”, they find themselves trapped in a fire. Here, they both admit their lingering love for each other. However, instead of jumping back into a relationship right away, they opt to tread lightly around one another, even going so far as to joke about rekindling their romance on April Fool’s Day.
In essence, reviving their relationship between Lucy and Tim would imply that Lucy would answer to Tim, potentially causing complications for both professionally. To avoid this, Tim suggested Lucy pursue the sergeant’s test, hinting at a possible rekindling if she succeeded. Lucy passed the exam, but Tim hesitated about restarting due to their differing work schedules. In The Rookie Season 7, Episode 18, “The Good, the Bad, and the Oscar,” despite the disparity, Tim visits Lucy’s apartment, prepares a meal for her, and admits his desire to rekindle their relationship; however, Lucy falls asleep before they can discuss it further. The question remains: Can Lucy and Tim navigate the time difference? Will we see more of our favorite couple, Chenford, in Season 8? To find out, fans will need to watch when Season 8 premieres.
