Modern gaming often involves players contributing to the experience alongside developers. This can range from official tools letting users design levels and missions, to dedicated modders creating extensive new content. Sometimes, this player-created content even surpasses what the developers originally provided.
These days, most games can be modified by players, and they’re often incredibly creative with it. Players consistently find ways to improve upon or drastically alter the games they enjoy, no matter the type of game. These modifications can range from simple changes to the game’s scenery to complete overhauls that even change the genre.
We’ll be exploring games that are greatly enhanced by modifications created by their players, offering completely new ways to experience them.
10. Red Dead Redemption 2
Creating Chaos in the Old Days

I don’t think Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterpiece, but it’s a really good game. With mods, though, it becomes truly exceptional. Mods make the gameplay much more enjoyable by adding things Rockstar didn’t include, like new features, mechanics, and even whole new missions.
Mods open up new possibilities in the game. For instance, you’re no longer limited to staying within the camp and can freely explore. They also let you participate in heists separate from the main story, creating exciting and difficult challenges. Plus, mods can make the world feel more dangerous by increasing the activity of other gangs, making travel less predictable and more engaging.
Honestly, the combat in the base game always felt a little off to me. But then I discovered mods that completely overhaul it – things like adding realistic damage depending on where you hit an enemy, and making enemies actually react to being shot. It’s made all the difference! I can’t really play the game without them now, given how things were originally designed, and they’ve finally let me appreciate just how amazing this game can be. It’s incredible what the fans have done!
9. Sifu
Choose Your Warrior
Released in 2022, Sifu is a fantastic game that doesn’t get enough attention. Surprisingly, it has a thriving modding community. The most impressive mods don’t just change the game’s appearance; they alter the gameplay itself. A popular example lets you experience The Matrix, playing as Neo and battling agents instead of the standard enemies throughout each level.
Sifu offers even more replayability thanks to a thriving modding community. You can even play as Daredevil, recreating his iconic hallway fight with a brand-new fighting style. There’s a huge variety of downloadable movesets available, completely changing how the game feels and plays. These aren’t just simple tweaks; many are based on real martial arts, featuring impressive animations and accurate hit detection. While Sifu isn’t a particularly long game on its own, the abundance of mods can easily double its playtime, keeping you engaged in the arena modes for hours.
8. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Doing the Most With the Least
Star Wars: Jedi Academy is a good game, but it lacked the grand, memorable moments fans expect from the series. Thankfully, the game’s community created amazing modifications that fixed this. While many excellent multiplayer mods exist featuring characters from across the Star Wars universe, Galactic Legacy is the one you absolutely need to try.
This impressive mod lets you experience iconic moments from the Star Wars franchise. You can play through famous scenes like Luke Skywalker’s duel with Darth Vader and the tragic events at the Jedi Temple. It’s incredibly detailed, with spot-on environments, music, and voice acting that perfectly recreate the movies. It’s clear the creators put a huge amount of work into making this mod feel authentic.
Other modifications, such as Star Wars: Movie Duels, have also helped keep this 2004 game enjoyable and popular even now. Despite being quite old, these mods have given the game a new life.
7. Half Life: Alyx
Living Through Multiple Worlds
Half-Life: Alyx is a standout achievement in virtual reality, and it’s become even more incredible thanks to its active modding community. People have created entirely new games within Alyx – I’ve personally explored the world of BioShock inside a mod, revisited locations from Half-Life 2, and that’s just a small taste of what’s possible.
The game also features completely new campaigns, such as Levitation, which seamlessly integrates a fresh storyline into the original game, feeling like it always belonged. The work the engine modders are doing is incredible – the new content is almost indistinguishable from the original game. I especially love Gunman: Contracts, which is essentially a John Wick-style experience with fantastic mission design and satisfying gun combat. It’s so well-received that the developers are currently creating a standalone version.
6. Starfield
The Potential of a Universe
Although it’s still new, the modding community for Starfield is expanding rapidly. While some mods are available for purchase, the most exciting developments are coming from players creating their own content. There’s a huge variety of new guns, armor, and environments, but it’s the player-made quests that are truly impressive – already surpassing what was included in the original game.
Starfield offers completely new content created by players, featuring characters with voice acting, engaging goals, and well-written stories. Plus, ambitious mods let you completely transform the game – some even turn Starfield into a Star Wars experience! The player-created content is already fantastic, and given Bethesda’s history with modding, Starfield is poised to become a major hub for modders for years to come.
5. Mount and Blade: Warband
Every Battle You’ve Dreamed Of
Mount and Blade: Warband doesn’t immediately stand out – its graphics were simple even when it first came out, and the fighting felt a little awkward. But a dedicated modding community has kept the game thriving by creating total conversions that let you experience battles from countless fictional and historical wars. You can find mods for just about any setting you can imagine within Mount and Blade: Warband.
It’s not an exaggeration to say this game has incredible replay value. Thanks to a huge number of fan-made modifications – from universes like Warhammer 40k, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Game of Thrones – the experience constantly feels new and exciting. One minute you might be battling the Lannisters, and the next you’re fighting Stormtroopers with a lightsaber, all within the same game!
The game offers an incredible range of content, and updates are still being released even with the sequel available. This means the modding community will continue to support and expand the game for a long time.
4. Arma 3
Wars of Different Flavors
Arma 3 is a realistic military simulator, but its dedicated modding community dramatically expands its possibilities. Players can completely transform the game, turning it into universes like Halo or even extending the world of Titanfall 2. There are tons of these mods available, and one of the most impressive lets you experience the Mass Effect universe, including the First Contact War and other scenarios.
This game offers extensive modding options, letting you change everything from weapons and characters to vehicles. These modifications can dramatically alter the gameplay, creating a truly immersive and unique experience. Even though the original game is enjoyable, mods provide virtually limitless replay value.
Whether you want to add more content to the existing game or recreate historical battles, Arma 3 has a huge selection of mods for you. You don’t even need to turn your game into a futuristic warzone – though you can if you want to! Whatever kind of military action you enjoy, the Arma 3 community has plenty of options.
3. Elden Ring
Remaking the World
Elden Ring has become incredibly popular, and its dedicated modding community is keeping it that way. The mods available are truly impressive, ranging from simple tweaks like changing enemy locations and weapon attacks to massive overhauls that can completely transform the game. You can even use mods to make Elden Ring play more like other popular titles, such as Sekiro or Bloodborne, by altering gameplay mechanics and animations.
The game has a thriving modding community that offers something for everyone. Players can find mods to simplify the experience with an easy mode, or drastically increase the challenge – even facing multiple powerful bosses at the same time! You can also add new content like guns, maps, and bosses from older games in the series. It’s incredibly creative, and the community continues to grow and support the game.
You can even pause the game using a mod, which is pretty neat. But the real highlight is the Seamless Co-op mod – it lets you and your friends play through the whole game together. It’s so well-made, it’s surprising FromSoftware didn’t hire the creator! It finally allows you to experience a Souls game as a traditional co-op adventure.
2. Baldur’s Gate 3
Opening the World to the Players
Baldur’s Gate 3 is already a fantastic game, but player-created content makes it even better. Modders started enhancing the game on their own, and Larian Studios responded by adding a built-in modding menu. This allows players to personalize their experience in tons of different ways, staying true to the spirit of Dungeons & Dragons, which has always been about customization.
This update introduces completely new character classes that dramatically change how the game is played. Beyond that, you’ll discover new spells, create custom characters, and even modify core game mechanics like short and long rests. There are also a lot of helpful improvements to make your experience smoother. For example, I really enjoyed a mod that increased my character’s running speed – it was a small change, but it made exploring the game world much more fun, and it’s all thanks to the creativity of players.
The game is already incredibly replayable on its own, but the modding community takes it to another level with a huge variety of options. Being able to add new playable races is a particularly great feature, and it’s impressive how smoothly the game handles all these changes – a real testament to Larian’s work on the game engine.
1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Unending Journey
Skyrim is incredibly addictive, and a huge part of that is its dedicated modding community. The extent to which players can modify the game is legendary. While the original game offers a lot of content, mods take it to another level, adding entire new lands and storylines that can take over 20 hours to complete – often longer than official downloadable content.
Skyrim has a huge amount of player-created content, ranging from complete overhauls – like one that lets you experience scenes from The Lord of the Rings, including the Battle of Helm’s Deep – to smaller additions like new weapons, creatures, and towns. People have even built entire new campaigns within the game, and some modders have turned their hobby into careers. A prime example of what’s possible is Enderal, a completely separate game built using Skyrim’s engine.
Skyrim has a huge number of funny mods, like changing dragons into the iconic wrestler Macho Man Randy Savage. Some are even a bit terrifying – imagine playing as a giant spider moving 200 times faster than normal! But the incredible thing is, people are still creating new mods for the game. It’s become a place for endless creativity, expanding far beyond the original game and really highlighting the power of its player community – more than any other game, really.
