10 DC Heroes Who Could Make Their DCU Debut In Peacemaker Season 2

The DCEU production that garnered widespread popularity was particularly noteworthy, serving as an ideal starting point for the fresh approach and unique styles of the new DCU. It also helped acclimate fans to James Gunn’s take on DC characters. Many scenes from Season One left a lasting impression, but one moment in particular captivated the online community: the shocking cameo of Justice League in the season finale, marking their first screen appearance since 2018’s Justice League and the Snyder Cut.

Although specifics about the storyline of the next season of Peacemaker remain unknown, writer/director James Gunn has given hints about an equally sensational surprise appearance at the end of this season, introducing a character who will make their DC Universe debut for the first time. This revelation is especially thrilling given that the DCU is still in its infancy, with this being just the third production in this fresh universe. Consequently, the identity of this cameo could be that of a significant character who may shape the course of this new universe.

Peacemaker is primarily recognized for his Charlton and post-“The Suicide Squad” periods, but a significant aspect of his history that’s frequently overlooked is his late Post-Crisis era. Although Christopher Smith made occasional appearances throughout the Post-Crisis timeline, his most memorable role was penned by Keith Giffen in an unexpected comic series.

2006 saw the exciting debut of Giffen’s Blue Beetle, picking up from the aftermath of Infinite Crisis. This series marked the beginning of Jaime Reyes’ solo adventures, catapulting him into fame. Notably, a retired Christopher Smith made an early appearance in this storyline, delving into the mystery of the Scarab and soon forming a friendship with Jaime, serving as his mentor. In this potential adaptation, John Cena’s Smith might try to guide Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes, but their relationship could take an unexpected turn, with the mentorship proving unsuccessful.

The upcoming Season 2 is set to start with Peacemaker encountering this group, who call themselves the Justice Gang (a title that Guy Gardner seems fond of, though his teammates remain uncertain). This scenario offers an ideal chance to introduce or allude to additional members such as Booster Gold, a character who would suit the show perfectly.

To today’s viewers, Peacemaker is another well-known character from DC Comics. But his roots run deeper, as he was initially introduced in the comics of Charlton Comics, a publisher that once competed with DC. Unfortunately, Charlton was eventually absorbed by the competition in 1983, along with numerous heroes created by Steve Ditko, who is also known for co-creating Spider-Man.

In the realm of Charlton Comics, Steve Ditko introduced a significant character named Victor Sage, who became known as The Question. This vigilante, rooted in Objectivist philosophy, employs his background as a journalist for detective work reminiscent of characters like The Shadow. Although Peacemaker and The Question don’t have a direct link, they do share common ground: both were sources of inspiration for The Comedian and Rorschach from Watchmen, and they co-starred in the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely-penned Watchmen homage titled Pax Americana. Regardless of how Gunn chooses to portray The Question, his character promises hilarious chemistry with Peacemaker due to their contrasting personalities – whether he’s a conspiracy theorist, a contemplative philosopher, or overly committed to Objectivism.

What’s fascinating about Peacemaker is its bold integration into the DC Universe, consistently alluding to and referencing other characters. A recurring joke that both delighted and puzzled fans during the first season of Peacemaker was Christopher Smith’s outlandish speculations about various superheroes. These theories ranged from Superman having unusual habits to The Flash being a failure, and Wonder Woman harboring feelings for him.

Instead of saying “was to,” we could phrase it as “was known for” or “frequently attended.” So, the revised sentence would be:

Green Arrow was a hero who, unlike many other characters, didn’t exist in the DCEU up until Peacemaker mentioned his name. John Cena’s character in the movie played a significant role, transforming into a villain towards Rick Flag and Bloodsport during the climactic scenes. Notably, Peacemaker had minimal interactions with another major character in the storyline.

In the same vein as the 2016 incarnation, Harley played a significant role in “The Suicide Squad.” Among DC Extended Universe (DCEU) characters, she was one of the few who remained throughout the entire storyline. Although her future in the new DC Universe is undecided, given that much of the Peacemaker continuity from the DCEU has been carried over, it’s likely that Harley remains intact as well, considering her widespread appeal among mainstream viewers. There’s a strong possibility she could reappear and join forces with her Suicide Squad comrade once more, potentially even with a new actress embodying her character in this fresh universe.

James Gunn is often praised for his affinity towards the lesser-known, quirky Silver Age comic characters that are not as widely recognized. In the first season of Peacemaker, there were numerous nods and winks to these characters, such as Matter-Eater Lad and Kite-Man. One character, in particular, was expanded into a full joke within the series.

Bat-Mite, a fifth-dimensional imp and an ardent admirer of Batman, symbolizes Silver Age whimsy at its finest. Given that Peacemaker explores grandiose ideas through everyday characters, it’s not too unbelievable to imagine the appearance of such a quirky character like Bat-Mite, especially since Peacemaker is gearing up for its second season.

The film “The Suicide Squad” and its subsequent spin-off series “Peacemaker” have garnered praise from fans due to their departure from DC’s traditional tone, emphasizing crude R-rated humor and violence. James Gunn’s writing style sets him apart in the realm of superhero films, making him one of the unique voices in the comic book movie industry.

Prior to Christopher Smith becoming DC’s top raunchy, gore-filled anti-hero, there was Lobo. He served as a satire of the edgy heroes that emerged in the 80s and gained popularity as the 90s approached, and has only grown more relevant over time. In the upcoming second film of the new DCU, fans can expect Jason Momoa to portray Lobo alongside Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El. It’s possible that Momoa, who is friends with Gunn, could continue the tradition of making a cameo in the finale of Peacemaker, but this time as Lobo instead of Aquaman.

Among the Charlton heroes, many traditional fans were surprised to see Peacemaker gaining popularity among a wider audience. It’s not that Christopher Smith isn’t fantastic, but another character stands out considerably when considering their fit within the DC universe’s narrative.

As Captain Atom, or Nathaniel Adams as I’m known off-screen, I’ve undergone quite the transformation from a Silver Age creation to a politically charged superhero. Initially, I was just an average guy, but over time, I’ve become one of DC Comics’ most significant heroes—and arguably their strongest.

My solo series from the ’80s is a favorite among fans, and recently, there’s been a renewed interest in me online. Plus, I’ve had the honor of being part of the Charlton universe, a member of the Pax Americana, and starring in a Checkmate storyline alongside Peacemaker in his second season. It’s an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next!

In essence, “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” can be seen as a pair of stories sharing a common thread. Amanda Waller played a pivotal role in both narratives, manipulating events from behind the scenes as the enigmatic head of Task Force X. The first season of “Peacemaker” concluded with the revelation of Task Force X to the public, prompting its closure by the government. Yet, Waller has devised a new strategy for resurrection, leading us into the storyline of “Creature Commandos”.

In the comic books, Amanda Waller oversees an autonomous division known as Task Force X, which is often depicted as a chess piece. This group has undertaken numerous significant missions, such as combating terrorism, retrieving Deathstroke’s body, and even attempting to eliminate every metahuman on Earth under the instruction of their former leader, Maxwell Lord. It’s worth noting that this organization has collaborated with Peacemaker in the past. It appears that Gunn’s DC projects are leaning towards a connection with this group, as there are rumors suggesting that Waller’s show is now being developed as a Checkmate series.
