As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours traversing the treacherous landscapes of Pandora, I must say that seeing these iconic locations from “Borderlands 2” brought to life on the silver screen is nothing short of exhilarating! From the Bloodshot Stronghold, where many a Vault Hunter has faced their first major challenge, to Sanctuary, the bustling heart of Pandoran civilization, each location resonates with memories of epic battles, hilarious side quests, and camaraderie forged in the crucible of co-op gaming.
The movie version of the popular video game “Borderlands,” produced by Lionsgate, is now playing in cinemas across the country. This film brings together characters and storylines from the initial two “Borderlands” games. In this adventure, a former mercenary who transforms into an interstellar sorceress named Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett) joins forces with Roland (Kevin Hart), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), Krieg (Florian Munteanu), and the robot Claptrap (voiced by Jack Black). Together, they aim to defeat a wicked arms manufacturer, Atlas (Édgar Ramírez), who is led by a power-hungry CEO.
The film has generally received unfavorable critiques, being labeled as a misfire in the realm of video game adaptations following the successes of shows like HBO’s “The Last of Us” series and the well-received “Sonic the Hedgehog” films.
Peter Debruge, a film critic for EbMaster, commented that Cate Blanchett delivers an outstanding performance in making an otherwise implausible character believable. Despite fans’ expectations of Lilith and her role in Roth’s retelling, Blanchett manages to avoid campy portrayals, as seen in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. However, it is worth noting that, following the conclusion of ‘Tár’, where Blanchett’s character was at rock bottom conducting video game music for a cosplay audience, her performance as a video game character seems somewhat ironic. The film attempts to give each lead a heroic battle against a stronger opponent, but as the plot unfolds, it becomes apparent where things are heading. By the time the vault is opened in ‘Borderlands’, even the characters themselves seem uninterested in what lies within.

The Infinity Pistol
The Infinity Pistol, famously known as one of the legendary weapons in “Borderlands 2”, is unique because it has an endless supply of ammunition. In the movie, Lilith frequently uses this pistol, and in the game, it’s a scarcely found loot from the mini-boss Doc Mercy, hidden in Three Horns Valley.
Caustic Caverns
As a devoted fan of the “Borderlands” series, I must say that Caustic Caverns stands out as one of the most breathtaking locales within these games. In the movie adaptation, it’s been scaled down to a cramped sewer network, but in “Borderlands 2,” it blooms into an expansive, toxic playground that pulses with danger, mystery, and rusted remnants of forgotten mining operations. It’s a far cry from its cinematic counterpart, but for us gamers, the vibrant, treacherous beauty of Caustic Caverns remains unparalleled.
Marcus’ Van
In the original “Borderlands” video game, Marcus’ van acts as a means of transporting you to Pandora’s desolate landscape once you’ve chosen your Vault Hunter. Similarly, in the movie, Marcus drives Lilith in the same vehicle upon her arrival on the planet.
The Bloodshot Stronghold
In “Borderlands 2,” the Bloodshot Stronghold serves as a significant obstacle on your journey to thwart Handsome Jack. Although the movie deviates from this plot, the stronghold continues to be the ominous, perilous base of operation for Pandora’s bloodthirsty psychopath gang – The Bloodshots.
Sanctuary
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’d describe “Sanctuary” as the central haven of the “Borderlands 2” universe – arguably the most renowned location in the franchise. In our cinematic adventure, it plays an equally significant role, offering refuge to Lilith and countless other Pandorans who find their way through its protective gates.
The Vault
“The Vault,” renowned as the greatest treasure repository, is said to house an alien tech of unfathomable might. Across all mainline “Borderlands” games, the primary objective has been to unlock this vault. In the movie, Lillith and her group aim to reach the vault before Atlas does, to prevent him from misusing its immense power.”
The Fire Hawk
As a devotee of the Borderlands universe, I’m fondly known as the Fire Hawk – a moniker that echoes my character, Lilith. This title derives from her extraordinary ability to sprout fiery wings using her siren prowess. In the cinematic narrative, however, Lilith remains powerless until she unlocks the vault, thus awakening her dormant Fire Hawk abilities.
The Atlas Corporation
The Atlas Corporation plays a significant role in the first “Borderlands” game, functioning as a leading weapons manufacturer and the main antagonist in its popular downloadable content titled “The Secret Armory of General Knoxx.” In the movie, the CEO Atlas, for whom the company is named, represents Atlas Corporation.
The Badonkadonks
In the game “Borderlands 2”, Tiny Tina’s nickname for her toy-like explosives is “badonkadonks”. Players recall searching for these badonkadonks during the mission called “A Train to Catch.”
Moxxi’s Bar
In “Borderlands 2”, Moxxi’s Bar serves as the preferred hangout spot for Sanctuary residents and offers additional jobs. Within the movie, Moxxi establishes her bar as a covert sanctuary for our protagonists and directs them towards Tannis’ lab.
