10 Best New Spawn Characters From the Last Decade, Ranked

Over the last decade, I’ve seen a staggering comeback in Todd McFarlane’s gaming universe. The main comic book is flying off shelves faster than ever, making me feel like I’m part of something big again. But it’s not just the core series that’s thriving; there have been numerous spinoffs too, all raking in success.

These fresh additions to the franchise have brought new characters into play, some echoing or building upon existing lore. It’s like a whole new world is unfolding before my eyes!

Since 2019, quite a few fresh characters from the Spawn mythology have emerged, leading to numerous spinoff books. Additionally, we’ve seen new villains and modernized versions of old favorites, most of whom now boast their own stylish McFarlane Toys action figures. The past decade has been particularly fruitful for Spawn, with a wealth of exciting new characters to explore in the comic series.

First Appearance: Gunslinger Spawn #1 by Ales Kot and Brett Booth

In the ongoing comic book series, “Gunslinger Spawn,” a supporting character named Taylor Bartlett finds himself entangled in the Gunslinger’s tumultuous universe of angels and demons. Notably, it is Gunslinger Spawn who rescues Taylor Bartlett when it’s unveiled that his father conspires with wayward angels. Subsequently, the two characters form a strong bond, often found together as one imparts knowledge to the other while ensuring their mutual safety.

Taylor often finds himself overwhelmed by his surroundings, yet this fits him perfectly as a contrast. Although they are quite distinct from each other, both Taylor and the paranormal world prove beneficial to one another, particularly after Taylor discovers the truth about the supernatural occurrences in the world. In the contemporary Spawn comics, he stands out as one of the rare ordinary individuals, adding an extra layer of uniqueness to his character.

First Appearance: Spawn #270 by Todd McFarlane, Tom Leveen and Szymon Kudranski

Different from most characters introduced in Spawn more recently, Soul Crusher doesn’t have a direct connection to Hell or otherworldly entities. Instead, this is the second individual bearing the name “Soul Crusher,” and despite his peculiar and militarized appearance, he demonstrates an impressive amount of power. Enhanced with cybernetics and equipped with an array of weapons, Soul Crusher stands among the humans who are particularly adept at combating supernatural threats, whether they hail from Heaven or Hell.

Soul Crusher isn’t strictly a villain, but rather an adversary to both Spawn and The Scorched. He is hostile towards any form of supernatural power, and harbors resentment against the hellspawns due to the death of one of his allies. However, despite his disdain, he has occasionally assisted these characters in survival situations.

First Appearance: Gunslinger Spawn #15 by Todd McFarlane and Brett Booth

In the realm of the Spawn Universe, most powers are largely mystical, making them rather vague and open-ended. For example, Spawn possesses extraordinary physical abilities, along with any additional talents that might be required in various circumstances. A more contemporary character introduced to this lore is Focus, who embodies a traditional “superhero” approach by harnessing superhuman speed.

His extraordinary speed sets Focus apart from ordinary beings, not due to mystical experiments but through unusual scientific means. It’s important to note that this ability has no connection to realms like Hell, Heaven, or anything supernatural. In fact, even the powerful Gunslinger Spawn finds himself surprised by him, suspecting he might be an unconventional supernatural enforcer trying to eliminate him. Despite his infrequent appearances, Focus adds a fresh twist to the franchise by representing a unique character variation of .

First Appearance: Spawn #313 by Todd McFarlane and Carlo Barberi

Among the latest additions to the Spawn universe, a character named Monolith has gained significant independence. This character bears a resemblance, albeit faint, to another figure hailing from the same creator’s portfolio. Monolith is an imposing, orange-hued creature of Hell, and his appearance seems reminiscent of an alternate color scheme for a character named Necrid from Soulcalibur II, created by Todd McFarlane. His monstrous size mirrors his formidable strength, and he is loyal only to those who wield even greater power, such as Omega Spawn.

Initially, Monolith exhibited immense power and brutal strength when he first appeared, overwhelming Al Simmons. However, luckily for Spawn, Monolith grew tired of working for Omega Spawn and eventually switched sides to become an ally. Since then, McFarlane Toys has produced figures of Monolith, and he even got his own spin-off comic book series.

First Appearance: Gunslinger Spawn #13 by Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman

With a Vaudeville-like persona, Dakota subtly suggests her connection to the villainous Clown, aka the Demonic Violator – her father. Unlike her menacing father, Dakota has a relatively ordinary appearance, but she shares links to fearsome creatures. Abandoning traditional demonic powers, Dakota’s primary strength lies in her ability to command and converse with a vast dinosaur army.

She has the ability to alter and adjust the features and dimensions of these beings, bestowing one upon Gunslinger Spawn for riding purposes. Despite her background, Dakota harbors intense dislike towards her jester-like father and strives to oppose him at every turn. This leads her to form an alliance with Taylor and Gunslinger Spawn, despite her initial attempts to eliminate the latter.

First Appearance: Spawn #9 by Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane

Cogliostro is no fresh face in the Spawn universe. He made his debut within the first year of the comic’s release. However, his latest incarnation presents a stark contrast and symbolizes his shift in loyalty towards Al Simmons. As it turns out, Cogliostro now embodies the malevolent, armored character known as Sinn, which was previously unveiled that he is none other than the Biblical figure Cain.

As a gamer, I’ve been using my own powers and resources to counteract the escalating danger posed by Spawn and his ilk. I even took down Nyx, the original She-Spawn, but she eventually got her sweet revenge on me. Contrary to being some reclusive mystic lurking in back alleys, my design happens to mirror that of a Warsuit, which is quite ironic.

First Appearance: Image United #1 by Todd McFarlane

Omega Spawn initially appeared in the unsuccessful collaboration known as Image United, with most of the storyline being considered non-canonical for the associated franchises. However, we’re fortunate to have a canonical version of Omega Spawn emerge within the pages of the Spawn comic book, granting him immense power and a fitting backstory.

Omega Spawn, the eldest among the demons, possessed power comparable to that of Dark Malebolgia and possibly even exceeded it. This is why he bears such a name, as his appearance takes on a more demonic form similar to Spawn himself. He even commands a cult at his disposal, making him an incredibly resourceful adversary among all supernatural threats. What’s more alarming is that his reign has extended beyond our planet when he was called back to Earth, demonstrating the immense scale of the danger he presents.

First Appearance: Rat City #1 by Erica Schultz and Zé Carlos

As a gamer, I can tell you that Rat City has certainly taken the franchise to a whole new level, introducing an entirely fresh timeline. In this gritty, futuristic world, “The Deviant” is no ordinary character; he’s the offspring of the city itself, or rather, a cyborg named Peter Cairn who was tainted by it. When Al Simmons detonated his time bomb in the past, it triggered an explosion of his magical/demonic energy in the future, which then bonded with Cairn. This transformation has given us a high-tech, cyberpunk reimagining of the iconic Spawn character.

Characterized in much the same way as Al Simmons, The Deviant is depicted as an individual struggling with misfortune, entangled in events far beyond his comprehension. These involve secretive government plots and supernatural abilities from the netherworld, yet presented with a futuristic, cyberpunk flavor. Equivalent to other popular characters, The Deviant has already secured an action figure from McFarlane Toys, signifying his emergence as one of the brand’s latest success stories.

First Appearance: The Scorched #1 by Sean Lewis, Paulo Siquiera and Stephen Segovia

Spawn, traditionally known more for its supernatural horror narrative rather than a typical superhero tale, has been following a more conventional path recently, largely due to one specific team. The Scorched squad is composed of beings born from hell, who are both allied with and independent of Spawn. Taking the lead among them is Jessica Priest, an adversary of Al Simmons in the past (and his actual killer after certain aspects of their history were rewritten), who has since transformed into She-Spawn.

In a simplified manner, The Scorched can be compared to the Justice League or Avengers in the realm of their equivalent, but they specialize in combating supernatural perils and occasionally tackling terrorist activities. This unique focus lends an appropriate edge to their shared universe, as they steer clear of mundane tasks like saving cats from trees. Crucially, their dynamics are often strained, with the tumultuous team primarily united by Spawn’s objective.

First Appearance: Spawn #119 by Brian Holguin and Todd McFarlane

As a gamer, I’d say one of the most triumphant characters to spin off from the Spawn universe is none other than Gunslinger Spawn. The introduction of his contemporary self was practically a catalyst for the resurgence of the Spawn property across the board. Picture this: a suave, gun-wielding hellspawn straight outta the Wild West, Javier, who was inadvertently hurled into our present time by Al Simmons. With his own vendetta to settle, he lends a hand to Spawn and others like him whenever it’s convenient for him. But make no mistake, he’s got his own independent business to attend to.

As a dedicated gamer, let me tell you about one of my favorite characters – Gunslinger Spawn. He’s part of an extensive cast, but he stands out as a crowd-favorite among the secondary Hellspawns. Despite being the least powerful among them, his allure lies in his mastery of traditional gunfighter skills that hark back to the old west. Plus, his design is a striking blend of the classic Spawn costume and unique elements that make him visually captivating, setting him apart from the rest.
