Horror fans have been enjoying a fantastic run of movies since 2020 – some of the best we’ve seen in over two decades. This marks a real turning point for the genre, especially considering the criticism many horror films received during the 2000s and 2010s.
A common criticism of recent horror movies is that they rely too heavily on remakes and cheap scares. The 2000s were especially filled with remakes of popular 80s films – like Friday the 13th and Prom Night – but these new versions rarely lived up to the originals.
After the success of The Conjuring in the 2010s, many horror movies started relying more on sudden scares than on creating a creepy atmosphere. While some films, particularly those from A24 like The Witch and Hereditary, focused on building suspense, they were often lost among the more mainstream, jump-scare-heavy releases.
The last ten years have been a high point for horror movies. We’ve seen a surge in genuinely great scary films, and critics have definitely noticed the improvement. Talented new directors like Zach Cregger and Coralie Fargeat, alongside established names like Jordan Peele, have created horror films that are receiving critical acclaim and even winning awards like Oscars.
The 2020s have seen a huge revival of the genre, and even before the decade is finished, we’ve already gotten some fantastic new movies.
10. Nope
Jordan Peele’s third movie captivated audiences with its fresh take on the alien invasion genre. The alien itself, nicknamed Jean Jacket, quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its distinctive design, which drew inspiration from classic 1950s UFOs and depictions of angels in religious texts. The movie builds to a particularly exciting climax as the Haywood family tries to film Jean Jacket.
Many horror fans have been particularly struck by the film’s frightening scenes. One especially terrifying moment involves Jean Jacket consuming a large crowd, and the film shows what it looks like inside her—a nightmarish view of people being squeezed together as they’re forced up what appears to be her throat.
Jordan Peele established himself as a horror expert with films like Get Out and Us. However, Nope demonstrates his ability to excel in any genre while still delivering thought-provoking and frightening stories.
9. The Invisible Man (2020)
Leigh Whannell’s reimagining of H.G. Wells’ famous sci-fi horror story was one of the final movies shown in cinemas before the pandemic began, but it still resonated with viewers.
Switching the story’s point of view to focus on the person being hunted by the Invisible Man deepens the narrative. Cecilia’s fear of her controlling ex-boyfriend is central to the film’s themes. Because Adrian Griffin is invisible, he embodies her past trauma, creating constant suspense as she struggles with the feeling he’s still present, even when she can’t see him.
This film works brilliantly as a horror movie, creating a truly suspenseful experience. The clever camera work and sound design keep viewers constantly anxious and searching for any sign of the Invisible Man. It remains a frightening and effective film today, and is widely considered one of the greatest horror remakes ever made.
8. When Evil Lurks
This Argentine horror film offers a fresh take on the possession genre. Instead of traditional demonic influence, it presents possession as a contagious infection, which is a truly original concept. The unpredictable nature of the attacks creates a deeply unsettling and terrifying experience, building constant tension throughout the film.
There’s a stretch of the film that feels completely normal, lulling you into a false sense of security. Then, without warning, a dog attacks a young girl, launching a frantic and terrifying chase. This scene perfectly illustrates that the movie offers no safe moments. When Evil Lurks is a truly groundbreaking horror film because it doesn’t coddle the audience, instead delivering a raw and intensely frightening portrayal of demonic possession.
7. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Everyone was excited to see Danny Boyle return to the world of 28 Days Later with the 2025 film, 28 Years Later. Though some fans have had varied reactions, the movie generally succeeded in expanding on the thrilling and memorable universe of the infected.
Just under a year after its release, Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was a significant improvement and a fantastic sequel. Ralph Fiennes delivers a particularly compelling performance as Doctor Kelson, arguably one of the most intriguing characters in the entire series. His unwavering belief in protecting humanity’s beauty, even amidst chaos, is truly captivating.
Things get even more interesting when he befriends Samson, an Alpha infected with the virus. Their relationship offers a compelling look at the humanity still present within the infected, and this idea is becoming a central theme of the new 28 Years Later series.
6. Heretic
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ film, Heretic, is thought-provoking because it explores both the negative and positive sides of religion. It critiques how religious organizations can be controlling and manipulative, but also suggests that faith can offer genuine hope and support to people who need it.
The film truly relies on its villain, Mr. Reed, and Hugh Grant gives an outstanding performance in the role. He portrays a character who initially appears friendly and reassuring, but is actually driven by malicious intentions. The way he manipulates the main characters and convinces them to believe in his fabricated ‘miracles’ perfectly reinforces the film’s central ideas.
5. Pearl
Ti West’s X trilogy explores the world of fame through three compelling films, but Pearl is particularly outstanding as a beautifully crafted horror drama.
Mia Goth delivers a captivating performance as Pearl in this X prequel, skillfully blending frightening moments with genuine emotional depth. While it doesn’t rely on as much graphic violence as the first film, the movie creates a deeply unsettling psychological horror. One particularly chilling scene shows Pearl’s horrified realization that she’s trapped on her family’s property.
The vibrant colors in Pearl really help create a unique and striking visual style. It’s reminiscent of a dark and unsettling version of The Wizard of Oz, as the main character, Pearl, dreams of becoming an actress. As the movie progresses, the harshness of reality becomes clear, and the building tension makes for a truly exceptional horror experience – you’re constantly waiting for something terrible to happen.
4. Bring Her Back
The Phillippou brothers quickly gained attention with their debut film, Talk to Me, and have now surpassed that success with their latest work. It’s a truly chilling horror film that stands out as one of the most memorable in recent years.
Bring Her Back offers a compelling exploration of grief and how it can drive people to extreme measures. Sally Hawkins delivers a standout performance as Laura, powerfully portraying a mother consumed by loss who turns to the occult and ultimately, to murder.
This film stands out for its incredibly tense and unsettling visuals, some of the most disturbing in recent horror. One particularly shocking scene, where Oliver bites down on a butcher knife, damaging his teeth and gums, has stayed with viewers long after the credits rolled, and it’s representative of the story’s overall horrifying nature.
3. Sinners
Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed horror film was a major conversation starter in 2025, and it’s easy to see why. Its unique take on vampires offers something new for fans of the genre, cleverly supporting the film’s ideas about fitting in and the loss of unique cultures.
One of the things that really sets Sinners apart is its music. It’s not just background noise; it’s a huge part of the movie’s identity. The soundtrack is all over the place in the best way, blending different genres to create this concert-like atmosphere within a horror film. And honestly, the way the music is used in the ‘I Lied To You’ scene alone is enough to elevate Sinners to an incredible horror experience – and I think it might just be one of the best films of the 2020s so far.
2. Weapons
2025 was a fantastic year for horror movies, continuing a trend of great films from the past decade. But among all the releases, Zach Cregger’s Weapons was truly exceptional.
This film is truly memorable because of its captivating mystery. The initial idea – an entire class of students disappearing simultaneously one night – immediately grabs your attention. The story is made even more compelling by its unconventional, non-linear structure, which lets the audience gradually uncover the truth themselves.
Amy Madigan truly shined in the film. Her performance as Aunt Gladys, a role she won an Oscar for, instantly created a new, beloved villain for horror fans. She was the glue that held everything together, making Weapons a fantastic horror movie.
1. The Substance
Coralie Fargeat’s film cleverly critiques the impossible beauty expectations placed on women in Hollywood, and it’s quickly become a favorite among both horror and movie lovers.
Demi Moore gives the best performance of her career, playing an actress whose fame is fading. Margaret Qualley, who plays her stand-in, complements Moore beautifully. The movie centers around the increasing tension and dislike between the two women, and the actresses portray this dynamic exceptionally well.
The movie builds to a truly shocking and impressive final act, making The Substance a visually stunning experience. It’s not just a commentary on the challenges women face in Hollywood; it’s a wild and disturbing body horror film that consistently delivers, and arguably the best horror movie of the decade so far.
