Through Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, has introduced an astounding variety of characters, yet some of these characters were given less attention than they truly deserved. Although these movies have propelled the storyline of the MCU, they have also illuminated the individual tales of the heroes.
Starting from Tony Stark, a self-centered billionaire who ultimately transformed into one of Earth’s most powerful champions, and Steve Rogers, a simple man who rose to defend the entire cosmos, countless remarkable heroes experience heroic and worthy conclusions.
Yet, some characters experience a sudden disappearance or receive unsatisfying conclusions. These characters truly warrant better treatment.
10. Maria Hill
In the Avengers films, I found myself yearning for more of Maria Hill – a character that, given the outstanding talent of Cobie Smulders, had immense potential to shine brighter.
In a scattering of uncommon instances, Maria managed to seize the spotlight, alas, these moments were usually found in films outside the main Avengers series. Tragically, she was ultimately taken by a defiant Skrull, with the intention of causing pain to Nick Fury. Maria deserved more than what life offered her, and a far nobler ending.
9. Quicksilver
Despite Wanda Maximoff frequently grabbing attention due to the profound sorrow in her Marvel Cinematic Universe narrative, there’s another character who often goes unnoticed – her brother, Pietro Maximoff. Both siblings endured the tragic loss of their parents at a tender age and were subsequently subjected to lengthy experiments.
Ultimately, they realized their mistakes and joined forces with the heroes. Tragically, Pietro sacrificed himself to protect the innocents from harm.
This version maintains the original meaning but is more conversational and easier to understand.
Despite a valiant conclusion, Wanda’s subsequent loss of Vision and her children seems to eclipse Pietro’s ending, making it feel less significant than his role in the story warranted. In essence, Pietro’s contributions become overlooked and diminished in comparison to the larger narrative.
8. The Other
As a devoted cinephile, I recall the enigmatic character known as The Other making his debut in the epic saga of “The Avengers.” Serving under Thanos initially as a loyal retainer, he assisted Loki in his nefarious plot to conquer Earth. Armed with the ability to summon the fearsome Chitauri army, he proved himself a faithful servant. Regrettably, The Other failed to make an appearance in any subsequent Avengers movies following this initial introduction.
In a quick sequence from the film “Guardians of the Galaxy”, Ronan ruthlessly slays The Other in full view of Thanos, who appears unphased by his servant’s demise. Despite not being portrayed as a hero, the character was treated callously and discarded without much thought, suggesting he deserved more respect.
7. Red Skull
In the movie “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Red Skull makes his debut alongside Steve Rogers. At this stage, Johann Schmidt is a normal human who has been boosted by an untreated Super Soldier serum. Despite his heightened powers, he ultimately loses to Steve Rogers.
However, interestingly enough, Red Skull reappears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War, where he is encountered by Thanos when the latter goes to retrieve the Soul Stone from Vormir.
In contrast, although Steve Rogers hands over the stone on Vormir during Avengers: Endgame, there’s no shown encounter between them afterwards. The Red Skull is an intriguing figure, unfortunately, he remains underdeveloped despite making more appearances later on.
6. Heimdall
In the realm of Asgard, Heimdall stands as a cherished companion to Thor and a vigilant guardian who guarantees secure passage for their folk. After years of loyalty and surviving the cataclysmic fall of Valhalla, Heimdall tragically meets his end at the hands of Thanos.
In his final breaths during the climax of “Avengers: Infinity War”, Heimdall selflessly creates a portal for Thor and Hulk to flee from the Mad Titan, leaving Earth. Despite all he suffered, it’s clear that Heimdall deserved a more dignified ending. He reappears in “Thor: Love & Thunder” within the realm of the afterlife, but his tale was sadly unfinished.
5. Hawkeye
Clint Barton, remarkably ordinary in terms of immortality, superpowers, and wealth, transformed into a lethal human instrument. His mastery with a bow is peerless, and a profound bond developed between him and Natasha Romanoff.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I must admit that despite Nat eventually getting a film to flesh out her story, it’s hard not to feel that Clint is one of the most underestimated and overlooked heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the snap happens, Clint finds himself grappling with the loss of his family, leading him down a dark path as Ronin, wreaking havoc on his enemies.
Later, upon their return, he conceals his disgraceful history and decides to step away from his superhero duties. It’s heartwarming that he managed to hand over his role to Kate Bishop, but it seemed as though Clint received an unfair treatment in the end.
4. Black Widow
In “Avengers: Endgame,” Natasha Romanoff’s life took an unexpected turn, as it came to a dramatic halt, while Clint’s life was in turmoil. Natasha, who was known as the Black Widow, had a rich and fulfilling life outside of the Avengers, and she had recently mended her relationships with her long-lost family.
After dedicating more than a decade to being the backbone of the team, Natasha Romanoff made the selfless decision to give up her own future for the sake of saving the world. Although this was undoubtedly the correct choice, it’s heart-wrenching to see such an exceptional character vanish without having fully basked in the limelight.
Once more, it’s lucky that her role could be taken over by her sister, Yelena Belova, yet it’s regrettable to ponder the greater feats she might have achieved had she lived through those ordeals.
3. J.A.R.V.I.S.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s sometimes easy to overlook J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s AI assistant who manages and operates his home. Tragically, in the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron, J.A.R.V.I.S.’s tale takes a grim turn when he is essentially wiped out by Ultron.
Tony contemplates a clever plan: transferring J.A.R.V.I.S.’s memories to the form Ultron was constructing, yet the entity that arises isn’t J.A.R.V.I.S., despite sharing the same voice.
Rather than that, combining the Mind Stone with this artificial body and an AI system leads to the birth of a completely novel entity. However, J.A.R.V.I.S. ceases to exist.
2. Vision
Discussing the character, their entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Age of Ultron was a fantastic boost for the team as they worked together to halt Ultron’s destruction. However, following that, the character found themselves having to choose allegiances in Captain America: Civil War. Eventually, they fled with their lover, Wanda Maximoff.
Nevertheless, in “Avengers: Infinity War,” Wanda and Vision are drawn into the fray as Thanos and the Black Order launch an assault on Earth. Since Vision embodies an Infinity Stone, he stands to lose significantly more than others, prompting Wanda and Shuri to make every effort to save his life.
Nevertheless, it’s his beloved who ends up taking his life to prevent Thanos, but after time is rewound, Vision experiences a second demise as Thanos removes the stone from his head.
It’s one of the most brutal and tragic character arcs in the MCU.
1. James Rhodes
James Rhodes has been loyal to Tony since the beginning of his heroic career, but Tony can be quite a handful, frequently landing Rhodes in trouble due to his antics. This is particularly evident during their alliance in “Captain America: Civil War,” resulting in Rhodes sustaining a severe spinal injury.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, let me tell you this: In the gripping tale of Secret Invasion, I found myself in an unimaginable predicament similar to Rhodey’s. At some pivotal moment in the storyline, I was replaced by a Skrull, while my original self was kept alive in a preservation pod. The Skrulling who took over my life continued to live and experience what I should have been living.
Rhodey indeed took on the role of War Machine within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but his journey has been more turbulent than triumphant, with more lows than highs. Here’s hoping that his tale post-rescue will see a significant turnaround from his previous experiences.
