The movie Dune, known for dividing opinions, will be leaving Netflix next month. While it received negative reviews when it first came out, the film—directed by David Lynch—has since become a favorite among a dedicated group of fans.
1984’s Dune leaves Netflix in May
David Lynch’s 1984 film, Dune, will no longer be available on Netflix after May 1, 2026. Lynch also wrote the movie’s script, which is based on Frank Herbert’s famous 1965 science fiction novel of the same name.
The movie centers on House Atreides, who are assigned to the desert planet Arrakis to oversee the production of ‘spice’ – a vital resource that allows for space travel. Shortly after arriving, they are betrayed by their enemies, the Harkonnen family, resulting in the death of Duke Leto Atreides. Leto’s son, Paul, and his mother, Lady Jessica, escape into the harsh desert and eventually find refuge with the native Fremen people. As Paul learns their ways, he begins to embody a prophecy foretelling a leader who will transform Arrakis.
The film Dune stars Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides, alongside Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica, Kenneth McMillan as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Richard Jordan as Duncan Idaho, Everett McGill as Stilgar, Sean Young as Chani, and Patrick Stewart as Gurney, as well as many other talented actors.
David Lynch’s Dune movie tried to fit the entire novel into one film, unlike the more recent adaptations by Denis Villeneuve. Initially, Lynch planned a two-part movie, but he ended up combining the stories into a single film (according to The New York Times). To do this, he had to make some changes to the original story and leave out significant portions of Frank Herbert’s book.
When Dune was released on December 14, 1984, critics didn’t like it, mainly because the story was confusing. It currently has a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although audiences gave it a score of 65%, that wasn’t enough to make the movie a hit. Made with a $40 million budget, it only earned $31.5 million worldwide.
Even though it didn’t do well at the box office, Dune did receive an Academy Award nomination for its sound design. Because the film wasn’t a financial success, any ideas for making more movies were put on hold.
Netflix subscribers have until the end of this month to stream Dune on the platform.
