This month, IO Interactive, creators of Hitman, publicly introduced 007 First Light – the latest James Bond console game since 007 Legends in 2012. The initial trailer for the game showcases a fresh origin tale for Bond and the associated action. Nonetheless, Hakan Abrak, IO Interactive’s CEO, emphasized that 007 First Light will encompass much more than just James Bond battling his way out of difficulties.
As a devoted fan, I wouldn’t want to create just another game focused solely on shooting and fleeing. Instead, it’s about crafting an immersive Bond world where he can move through social environments, engage with people, and cleverly overcome the challenges that come his way. Drawing from our experiences with Hitman: World of Assassination, we’ve incorporated elements that resonate with this concept, but let me make it clear: James Bond is a unique experience unlike anything we’ve done before in Hitman.
In simpler terms, Abrak continued by sharing that the game engine of IO was altered to enable the team to construct the thrilling action scenes reminiscent of James Bond, encompassing both close-quarters fighting and car chases. These elements are essentially integral to most Bond movies and video games.
In contrast to the film versions, Abrak proposed that this version of Bond retains its connection to Ian Fleming’s original character, notably the facial scar. The game will delve deeper into Bond’s journey to becoming a double-0 agent, an aspect that was hinted at but not fully explored in the 2006 Casino Royale adaptation.
Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Patrick Gibson from Dexter: Original Sin as the anticipated James Bond character by IO Studios, prior to the studio officially announcing his casting. Unfortunately, 007 First Light won’t be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC until 2026. In the meantime, Mads Mikkelsen from Casino Royale is set to reprise his role as Le Chiffre for a special Elusive Target mission in Hitman: World of Assassination, which is accessible now.
