The upcoming game, 007: First Light, aims to deliver a classic James Bond experience, complete with witty dialogue and action-packed combat. Players will step into the shoes of the iconic British secret agent, utilizing both his hand-to-hand fighting skills and expertise with firearms. Developer IO Interactive is focusing heavily on making the shooting mechanics feel polished and realistic.
The team behind the new James Bond game has experience with gunplay from their work on the Hitman series, but they’re approaching combat differently this time. According to gameplay director Andreas Krogh, Hitman encouraged players to avoid shooting whenever possible, making it challenging. For this new Bond game, they’ve designed the character to be comfortable and effective in gunfights, making ranged combat a strong option for players.
Krogh explained that shooting in the 007: First Light game is meant to feel smooth and quick, giving Bond a powerful and enjoyable way to eliminate enemies once he’s authorized to kill. This is different from the Hitman games, where using guns was risky. If Agent 47 was caught with a weapon, he’d immediately be swarmed by enemies. Hitman’s guns were also realistic – things like recoil and bullet drop made them difficult to use effectively, so it was often easier to make a murder look like an accident instead.
The James Bond game, 007: First Light, will be released on March 27, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. If you didn’t see the recent gameplay reveal, you can find 14 new details about the game and how IO Interactive designed its large levels. Pre-orders are now open for both the standard and deluxe editions, and a special collector’s edition is available that includes a golden gun.
