Zootopia 2’s Post-Credits Tease Explained By Director & Producer

The creators of Zootopia 2 have explained what happens in the scene after the credits roll. The original Zootopia came out in 2016 and showed us a city full of talking animals. The story follows Judy Hopps, a rabbit police officer, as she teams up with a sly fox named Nick Wilde to uncover a plot, and they both face discrimination along the way.

The highly anticipated sequel, Zootopia 2, is now in theaters! Judy and Nick are joined by a new character – a snake voiced by Ke Huy Quan. Jared Bush and Byron Howard directed the film, and Jared Bush, Jennifer Lee, and Yvette Merino produced it.

Director Byron Howard and producer Clark Spencer recently discussed the post-credits scene of their film with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan. Howard hinted at the potential for future stories, stating that “there are limitless numbers of stories to tell in the world of Zootopia,” but didn’t offer any specifics about what those stories might be.

Despite previous speculation, Merino clarified that Zootopia was always envisioned as a location within a larger world on a continent. Both Merino and Bush believe this opens up many possibilities for future stories and expansions. You can find their complete statements below.

In my final question, I’d like to discuss the ending scene. A feather appears, and because I was so caught up in the story, it didn’t register until I noticed it. It made me realize we haven’t seen any birds throughout the whole thing.

Jared Bush believes there are endless stories to tell within the world of Zootopia. He hopes the movie will spark audiences’ imaginations about the possibilities and mysteries that could be explored in future stories, which he and the team are eager to develop.

That’s right. When we designed Zootopia, we imagined it as a specific place – a city on a continent within a larger world. This allows for endless storytelling possibilities, because anything could happen beyond what we see in the movie.

The upcoming Zootopia 2 goes beyond the city setting of the first movie, introducing new and diverse environments. Judy and Nick, along with their friend Gary, venture into different landscapes. Because Gary is a snake, the sequel also features more reptile-focused elements and characters.

The quick scene after the credits is intriguing because it highlights something we haven’t seen in the Zootopia world before: birds. A single feather suggests birds exist in this universe, but so far, the story has mainly focused on mammals.

Both Bush and Merino have expressed interest in exploring the bird characters and world within the Zootopia franchise in future movies, but they haven’t shared many details about how that might happen.

The possibility of seeing more animal characters like those in Zootopia relies on the success of future films. Zootopia 2 is currently looking promising, with a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews from 79 critics. This is almost as good as the original Zootopia, which received a 98% rating and was certified fresh.

Okay, so the first Zootopia was a massive hit – over a billion dollars, seriously! And with the good word-of-mouth and a release during a holiday week, Zootopia 2 seems like it could do just as well. But here’s the thing: if they want to actually show us that awesome bird world they hinted at, Zootopia 2 really needs to keep bringing in the cash so they’ll make a Zootopia 3. It all depends on performance, basically.
