Over Thanksgiving weekend, Zootopia 2 is the number one movie in the US, while Wicked: For Good has seen a significant drop in ticket sales. Zootopia 2, released on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, continues the story of the popular 2016 animated film Zootopia. The original Zootopia was set in a city of animal characters and earned over $1 billion around the world.
The movie Zootopia 2 opened to huge success, earning $147 million in its first three days. This made it the highest-grossing opening weekend ever for a movie based on a Broadway musical, launching just five days after Wicked: For Good began its opening weekend.
According to Deadline, Zootopia 2 is expected to make around $98 million from Friday to Sunday and between $152 and $156 million over the entire Thanksgiving weekend. This will easily make it the top movie in the U.S. box office this weekend.
The opening weekend numbers for Zootopia 2 are still coming in, and they could increase significantly. A surprisingly high 61% of people bought their tickets on the same day as the showing – much more than usual now that most people buy tickets in advance. If this continues, the movie’s estimated earnings could jump by the end of Saturday.
Even if its performance stays within current expectations, Zootopia 2 is predicted to have the second-highest five-day Thanksgiving weekend earnings of all time, only behind the $225.4 million earned by Moana 2 in 2024. It also achieved the second-best Black Friday earnings ever, bringing in $38.5 million – just behind Moana 2‘s $54.3 million.
Although Moana 2 performed better at the box office during its opening weekend ($139.8 million), projections show Zootopia 2 is starting even stronger than the first Zootopia ($75.1 million). This suggests Zootopia 2 could potentially earn over a billion dollars.
The upcoming movie Wicked: For Good, set to release in 2025, is predicted to make $63.3 million over its opening weekend and $93.5 million over the five-day holiday. This would bring its total earnings in the U.S. to $270.9 million, making it the seventh highest-grossing film of 2025 after only two weeks in cinemas.
Overall numbers are up, but Wicked: For Good experienced a significant 57% decrease in ticket sales. This drop is more than twice as large as the 27.9% decrease seen by the original Wicked during the same Thanksgiving weekend in 2024.
It’s rare to see such a big drop in performance for a movie released before Thanksgiving. Usually, the Thanksgiving holiday brings so many people to the movies that even films released the previous weekend continue to do well. Here’s a look at how other popular pre-Thanksgiving releases have performed during their second weekend in theaters.

A drop of over 50% in ticket sales over Thanksgiving is unusual, and could suggest that Wicked: For Good might not perform as well long-term. However, the film is still bringing in a lot of money alongside Zootopia 2 during the holiday weekend, which is helping the box office recover after a slow period in early fall 2025.
