Wow, Zootopia 2 absolutely crushed it at the box office this weekend! It feels like it’s been ages since a Disney animated movie had such a huge opening. I actually saw it myself, and like everyone else, I’ve been scrolling through social media seeing all the buzz. It’s so crazy to learn that one of the most talked-about lines wasn’t even in the original script – talk about a happy accident!
A fan on Twitter highlighted a funny moment in the movie: when Idris Elba’s character, Chief Bogo, calls Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) a dismissive “orange dog.” Jared Bush, the director of Zootopia 2 and a creative leader at Walt Disney Animation Studios, replied to the fan, explaining that the line was actually improvised by Elba himself.
Idris Elba spontaneously came up with the line ‘Orange Dog’ while recording, and we immediately knew it was perfect for the film.
Everyone seems to absolutely love this particular detail! It’s surprising to learn the line was actually improvised by Idris Elba, and that actually makes it even funnier. Some of the most memorable scenes in movies are often unscripted. People have been sharing comments with Bush, including…
- One of the more memorable lines in a movie chock full of bangers! You crushed it on this one Jared – @scottcaldwell
- I definitely heard Knuckles with that line XD – @Zootopia_News
- THAT WAS AN AD-LIB??? Oh my gosh that’s even better thank you for this glorious tidbit – @jessicannatar
- yeah as soon as he said that I was like did he call him an orange dog – @zeldysnep
- I KNEW that felt ad-libbed a little. Idris is such a fun guy with Bogo. – @The_Movie_Goer
Idris Elba is incredibly funny because of his dry delivery. He can make even a simple line – like calling a fox an “orange dog” – hilarious, something most actors couldn’t pull off.

You can watch the original Zootopia on Disney+ starting at $11.99 per month with ads. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for the year. See the deal here.
Someone pointed out that the line sounds like it could have been said by another animated character Idris Elba voices, and they might be right. Elba’s character, Knuckles from the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, often uses very proper and detailed language. It’s easy to picture him describing a fox as an “orange dog,” and that could have been the inspiration for the line he improvised.
Now that Zootopia 2 has been so successful, and hints suggest a Zootopia 3 might be coming, it’s likely we’ll hear Idris Elba reprise his role as Chief Bogo again soon. Fans are hoping he’ll have a more substantial part in the next film, with more lines to deliver.
