James Gunn and Zack Snyder have demonstrated why DC fans can enjoy the work of both directors without having to choose sides.
Zack Snyder directed several films in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), starting with Man of Steel in 2013, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, and Justice League in 2017. The production of the 2017 Justice League was troubled, leading to the release of a director’s cut, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in 2021. The DCEU concluded in 2023 with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
James Gunn and Peter Safran then introduced the DCU at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios. It kicked off in 2024 with Creature Commandos, and so far includes the second season of Peacemaker and a new Superman story, with many more projects currently being developed.

Zack Snyder and James Gunn recently shared a story on Instagram about their work on the 2004 film Dawn of the Dead. Snyder directed the movie, which was a remake of the 1978 classic by George A. Romero, and Gunn wrote the script.

Despite frequent online debates between their fans, James Gunn and Zack Snyder are actually friends. Gunn even asked Snyder for advice on whether to give Superman red trunks in his upcoming 2025 film, and both directors voiced themselves in a recent episode of Rick and Morty. Claims of a rivalry between them are completely false.
I was so excited to see a movie with such a great cast – Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, and others – and I just found out Dawn of the Dead is streaming on Starz right now! Definitely going to check it out.
