Many well-known animators have had their YouTube videos flagged and lost advertising revenue, and they believe this is due to errors with YouTube’s automated content review system.
Being removed from the YouTube Partner Program – also known as demonetization – can be devastating for many creators, and it’s often very difficult to regain access. While some creators have other ways to earn money, lessening the impact of lost YouTube income, this isn’t true for everyone.
Several popular animators, especially those who create content featuring dinosaurs and giant monsters, have recently lost monetization on their channels.
This issue affects creators like DinoMania, a popular YouTuber with over a million subscribers, who notes that AI moderation systems are sometimes penalizing those who create original content while letting videos made with low-effort AI tools pass through.
Popular Dinosaur-focused YouTube channels demonetized
They pointed out that problems consistently arise with the animators who work on monsters and dinosaurs, and it’s always due to the same issue. This started happening immediately after the new “AI moderation” system was put in place, they explained in a post.
It seems like YouTube considers content featuring monsters or dinosaurs inappropriate for young children. If your videos aren’t aimed at that age group, they might remove your ability to earn money from them.
If you run a YouTube channel about dinosaurs or giant monsters and make money from it, you might be at risk of losing some of your earnings. From what I’ve seen, this is happening to a lot of other channels too – they’re having money taken away because the AI system is flagging their content for various reasons.
DinoMania pointed out that the makers of ARK: Survival Evolved have also experienced issues with reduced revenue, meaning this problem isn’t just affecting animators.
Several other channels with significant followings have also had their monetization removed, including Blunt Brothers Productions with 1.3 million subscribers and SlicK with 825,000. This shows that the issue isn’t limited to smaller content creators.
SlicK expressed frustration with YouTube’s handling of content moderation, stating the AI tools are unreliable and often incorrectly flag content. He pointed out that despite these errors, the platform remains filled with inappropriate and bot-generated content, sarcastically thanking the AI for its performance.
DinoMania is planning to start a Patreon account to reduce their dependence on YouTube revenue. However, many fans are asking YouTube to reinstate monetization for their channels.
Last December, popular YouTuber MoistCr1TiKaL strongly criticized YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, calling him out of touch for allowing artificial intelligence to take over content moderation. According to MoistCr1TiKaL, AI shouldn’t have the power to decide what gets removed from the platform or to shut down channels altogether.
