A YouTuber recently ordered a Domino’s pizza using a Nintendo Wii – even though Nintendo stopped supporting the console’s online features over ten years ago.
Retro Game Attic placed the order through an unofficial app that mimicked Japan’s Demae Channel. This original service let console owners order food right from their gaming system.
Nintendo stopped supporting its online services for the Wii in 2014. However, the Food Channel still functions thanks to Retro Game Attic, which uses Wii Link – a community-created alternative to the original servers – to keep it running.
Wii Link revives Japan only Food Channel
The Food Channel originally launched in Japan in 2009 as the Demae Channel for the Wii. It wasn’t available anywhere else. When Nintendo stopped supporting the Wii’s online features, the channel stopped working and remained unavailable for over a decade.
Retro Game Attic used WiiLink to get their Wii console online and even order a Domino’s pizza directly through it. They connected to Domino’s website using the console, allowing them to view pictures and current menu information.
I was totally amazed watching this YouTuber! They showed how you could actually use the original Wii menu – like, going into the Food Channel – and place a real order. And get this – even though it’s an old console and old software, the order actually went through and they got their delivery! It was wild to see.
The Nintendo Wii, which came out in 2006, was a pioneer in offering services beyond just games. It explored things like ordering food and streaming video years before these features became common on consoles.
