YouTube welcomes back permabanned creators for a “second chance” but there’s a catch

YouTube is giving some creators who were permanently banned a chance to return, but there’s a significant requirement they need to meet first.

Starting October 9, 2025, YouTube will begin a new pilot program allowing creators whose channels were previously terminated to apply to rejoin the platform. If approved, these creators can start a completely new channel and even re-upload videos they had previously posted, though they will be starting with no existing subscribers or views.

YouTube announced in a recent blog post that they plan to give some creators whose channels were previously terminated a second chance, recognizing that both the platform and its policies have changed significantly over the past two decades. They’ve also heard from creators who want a way to return to YouTube, and are responding to that feedback.

YouTube gives banned creators a “second chance”

Only creators who have been banned from YouTube for more than a year can apply for this program. YouTube is launching it gradually and will look at each application separately, considering how serious and ongoing any previous rule breaks were.

Not all bans will be considered. Creators who lost access due to copyright issues or breaking our Creator Responsibility rules won’t be able to participate.

If chosen, creators will start completely new channels – with zero followers, no way to earn money, and no existing support system. They’ll essentially have to build their audience from the very beginning.

YouTube announced that starting a new channel gives creators a clean slate. They can rebuild their audience, re-upload past videos that meet YouTube’s rules, and reapply for the YouTube Partner Program when they qualify.

The platform also made clear that if someone gets banned again, there won’t be another chance.

YouTube is responding to concerns from creators who felt permanent bans were too harsh and offered no way to fix mistakes. This new program suggests YouTube will now consider giving creators a second chance, but under specific conditions set by the platform, much like Twitch did when it started reinstating previously banned streamers.

We’re excited to have these creators return and believe they’ll be a great addition to the YouTube community, the company stated.

For creators who’ve made a living on YouTube, this new development could be a welcome opportunity. However, starting over and regaining their audience won’t be easy, and it remains to be seen if they can successfully revive their careers.
