YouTube updated its payment rules for creators in July, and many users were optimistic about the changes. They hoped this meant YouTube would more actively address the growing problem of low-quality, AI-generated content – often called “AI slop.”
Those hoping for improvements to YouTube may be disappointed by recent news. Users are reporting that the platform will likely allow even more low-quality videos to be created.
YouTube facilitates video creation with the help of AI
YouTube has released a free AI tool called Veo 3 that helps creators make Shorts. Veo 3 can generate Shorts from text prompts, and it now produces videos with improved sound and image quality, and is more accurate to the prompt.
Currently, this feature is only available in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the US, and the UK. The initial reaction to the announcement hasn’t been positive, with many people worried about a potential increase in poor-quality AI-generated content. Some YouTube Premium subscribers have even said they’re considering cancelling their subscriptions.
This move demonstrates the company’s view of YouTube Shorts as a testing ground for artificial intelligence. Following a recent, unpopular attempt to enhance Shorts with AI, YouTube is now adding AI-generated videos, signaling a preference for contributing to the growing amount of AI content on the platform rather than trying to limit it.
Instead of canceling subscriptions, many internet users are now using a browser extension to block YouTube Shorts. This helps them avoid content they don’t want to see, and it’s also a way to support creators who aren’t relying on AI to make their videos.
